The trial for Shmurda, real name Ackquille Pollard, will now start Feb 22 to give the defense more time to go over the prosecution’s evidence. The trial was supposed to start Oct. 5, but lawyers instead met with the judge to hash out the new court date. The “Hot Ni**a” rapper has been locked up for almost a year on charges that he led GS9, a violent gang that terrorized Brooklyn with shootings and drug dealing. He appeared briefly Oct. 5 in Manhattan Supreme Court, smiling at his mother in the audience as cops brought him in front of the judge. Judge James Burke denied a request by Shmurda’s new lawyer, Alex Spiro, to slash his client’s $2 million bail after Special Prosecutor Nigel Farina argued that Shmurda was dangerous and had the money and out of state connections to skip town. But Spiro countered that Shmurda’s net worth was just $400,000, he didn’t have a criminal record and there was no evidence that he’d actually hurt anyone. “I don’t believe he should have to sit in jail for what seems like another six months, waiting for trial,” Spiro said. Judge Burke denied the rapper a lower bail at least four previous times, Farina said. Although Shmurda earlier this year rejected an eight year plea agreement, Farina said there was still time to make a deal. He said investigators have since found Shmurda’s DNA on a sweatshirt and hat used in a shooting last January. “This case has gotten increasingly more convincing,” Farina said. “The evidence has gotten stronger, not weaker.”
