Joe Frazier’s death earlier this week has helped revive talk of his longtime rivalry with Muhammad Ali, who is expected to be at the homegoing for his three-time opponent. Muhammad Ali will travel to Philadelphia to attend funeral services for Joe Frazier, according to a Fox29 News report. Ali and another former champion, Larry Holmes, will be among the mourners for Frazier, the former heavyweight boxing champ who died Monday. Ali and Frazier had a stormy relationship but made amends in recent years. It’s unknown whether Ali will attend the public viewings for Frazier on Friday or Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center, or the services for Frazier on Monday in Cheltenham. A viewing is set for Frazier at the Wells Fargo Center on Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The services are open to the public. Frazier’s funeral service is scheduled for Nov. 14 at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church at 11 a.m., with a viewing beforehand. Frazier, who died at age 67 after a brief battle with liver cancer, is considered one of the great sporting figures in Philadelphia history. Frazier was the first man to beat Muhammad Ali, knocking him down and taking a decision in the so-called “Fight of the Century” in 1971. He would go on to lose two more fights to Ali, including the epic “Thrilla in Manila” bout. Frazier was bitter for many years about the way Ali treated him then. More recently, he said he had forgiven Ali for repeatedly taunting him. Ali went hard on Smokin’ Joe back in the day. Maybe too hard. We’re glad he’s making the effort to be there to pay his respects and regret that his struggle with Parkinson’s likely won’t allow him to speak about his former rival. R.I.P.
