Earthquake hits Puerto Rico 2010 at Magnitude 5.7. Puerto Rico was awakened this morning to a shaking magnitude 5.7 earthquake. May 16, 2010, a moderate earthquake struck in Puerto Rico. According to the USGS, the Puerto Rico earthquake was a magnitude 5.8. There are reports that an earthquake has hit Puerto Rico in the early hours of this morning (Sunday), with a magnitude of 5.7, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The city of Moca was at the epicentre of the quake. The epicenter of the quake was 3 miles from Moca, PR and Aceitunas, PR. So far there are no damage reports due to the earthquake in Puerto Rico this morning. Also, there are no reports of any injuries. Puerto Rico sets very near a fault line and has experienced strong quakes in the past. In 1918 there was a magnitude 7.5 earthquake in Puerto Rico that caused a tsunami killing 110 people. Hopefully the people of Puerto Rico will not experience any more earthquakes in the near future. The South American continent has been rattled by a few earthquakes in 2010 with the major devastating earthquake which struck Chile earlier this year and a Peru earthquake which took place just a few weeks ago. Nashville,Tennessee Experienced The Worst Rain Ever

Heavy rains were noted in Nashville, Tennessee which had cost 9 people’s lives, according to CNN.  Storms are predicted to hang on for at most two days and it was advised that residents of the affected localities are to stay off the road until weather clears up. Acccording to authorities, the current rain is the worst ever experienced by locals and has made more than 50 water rescues yesterday. Mayor of Nashville Karl Dean expressed “This is one of the most severe rain events Nashville has ever experienced.” Two levees broke in a small town near Nashville, and it’s estimated that about 2,000 people have been displaced because of the flooding. “The flooding brought the town to a standstill. Yazoo City MS Tornado – State of Emergency says Mayor Straughter

A giant tornado is reportedly the cause of major destruction to Yazoo City MS and is reportedly still in danger. Yazoo City Mississippi is still in the state of shock but is in the process of declaring a state of emergency. Yazoo City MS Officials are already reporting two confirmed deaths and they expect more to come. It was said that this tornado punched a line right through the city of Yazoo MS and has left nothing behind. The Yazoo City Tornado was one of the biggest tornadoes of the year. Mayor Straughter said that the damage is still being assessed but he expects it to be an ugly picture. Houses, vehicles and people were said to all have been victim to the tornado’s rage. The Yazoo City MS tornado will likely have negative effects to this county. There are more areas currently that have tornado warnings and residents are advised to stay indoors or within tornado shelters under ground if they can. Indonesian Island Rattle By Strong Earthquake

Associated Press — Indonesia hit by strong quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 has struck Indonesia’s North Maluku province. There have been no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning has been issued. According to U.S. Geological Survey says Saturday’s quake was centered near Obi island at a depth of about 33 miles (53 kilometers). Area rattles by the earthquake is some 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) east of Jakarta. As per Indonesia’s Meteorology, Geophysics and Climate Agency, the quake measured 6.4 magnitude. Indonesia rests on a series of fault lines that make the archipelago nation one of the most earthquake-prone. A quake last year killed more than 1,000 people on Sumatra. China: Nation Mourns Today

One week after the quake hit China, the country holds a National Day of Mourning for those victims of the deadly earthquake in Qinghai province. Flags are flying at half mast across the nation and public entertainments are restricted as a symbol of respect. The official death recorded from the 6.9 magnitude quake has now reached 2,039. Tens of thousands of people have been left homeless by the powerful earthquake. However, relief supplies are now pouring into the worst hit area which is the town of Jiegu. In addition, another 175 people are still missing and more than 12,000 are injured. Thousands of mourners are dressed in black and stood silently for three minutes as it snowed in the provincial capital of Xining. Car horns and sirens made a loud sound throughout the city. Public entertainment including some television channels has been suspended nationwide. Cinemas, karaoke bars and internet cafes are closed. The 24-hour ban even extends online, having music and film websites suspended. The biggest websites and newspaper mastheads have also turned black or grey for the day. Steam, Rocks, Ash thrown Out of Iceland Volcano May Cause Slight Warming In Atmosphere

Swedish climate expert said that the Icelandic volcano might cause slight warming in the atmosphere, but not as strong as the Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines in 1991. Philippines’ Pinatubo Volcano was stronger than eruption of Iceland Volcano which throwing all the ashes up into the stratosphere (more than 10,000 meters up in the atmosphere), climate expert Fred Goldberg reported to media. The Iceland Volcano eruption is not as strong and the ashes are therefore not thrown into the stratosphere, but remaining in the troposphere at 5,000 to10,000 meters said by Goldberg who is specifically focuses his research on the relations between Pinatubo volcano and global warming. He added that the incoming sunlight will warm these ash particles, which in turn will warm the surrounding air and therefore may cause a slight warming of the atmosphere. Update: Afghanistan Earthquake Kills 11 People

Not less than eleven people were killed and beyond 70 injured when an earthquake struck parts of northern Afghanistan. A 5.7 magnitude quake shook occurred at a depth of 10km, as reported by the US Geological Survey. It was also felt in Kabul and the neighboring countries of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The casualties were in the Dara-e-Suf district of Samangan. There were about 300 houses which were damaged by the quake and hundreds of cattle were killed.
