‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Star Olivia Wilde Happy To Revive Westerns

‘I think we’re bringing the Western to a younger audience in a major way,’ star says. By Sterling Wong, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Olivia Wilde in “Cowboys and Aliens” Photo: Universal Pictures Olivia Wilde is no stranger to big-budget productions — she did, after all, star in last year’s “Tron: Legacy.” But the actress is adamant about the fact that her latest blockbuster, this Friday’s much-anticipated “Cowboys & Aliens,” is not like any other that has come before this summer. “We are not a sequel, and we are not a superhero movie,” Wilde explained to MTV News, undoubtedly referring to the string of well-known franchise movies that have come our way thus far this summer, from sequels to “Harry Potter” and “Transformers” to comic book fare like “Thor” and “Captain America.” “So we’re an original piece of material and that’s really rare this summer.” OK, it’s no superhero movie, but “Cowboys” is based on a comic book. Still, Wilde emphasized that the plot isn’t exactly derivative. “Even though our title is based on a comic book, we’re not actually a comic book movie. The story is completely original,” Wilde noted. ” Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman , who wrote ‘Star Trek,’ wrote this story from scratch, just using the idea of the ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ comic book as inspiration.” Another way that “Cowboys & Aliens” stands out from the pack is the way it pays homage to a classic genre. “I think we’re bringing the Western to a younger audience in a major way, which I think is really exciting, because I love Westerns, and I’m happy to introduce this genre to a bunch of people,” Wilde said. Of course, no good Western is complete without its rugged leading men. “We have Daniel Craig, who I think embodied Steve McQueen in this role,” the actress gushed. “He’s so badass it’s unbelievable, and I think he’s really, really smart and interesting in this role, and I think Harrison Ford pulls out his best performance in years. He’s incredibly moving, and also very funny.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Cowboys & Aliens.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Jeremih Recalls His Dorm-Room Escape, On ‘When I Was 17’

Singer learned a valuable lesson when he ‘borrowed’ a friend’s video game. By Sterling Wong Jeremih on ‘When I Was 17’ Photo: MTV News College, as we all know, is a time of crazy experiences, and R&B singer Jeremih definitely had his share of zany antics. On this week’s “When I Was 17,” Jeremih shares his obsession with “Grand Theft Auto” and the trouble it caused him. “When I was 17, ‘Grand Theft Auto’ was one of the biggest games out, and I didn’t have it,” the singer recalls on the latest episode, premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. However, one of the guys on the floor of his dorm did have the game, but he refused to lend it to Jeremih. Desperate, he hatched a plan. “This one night, I actually went to his room. I knocked and he was asleep. I saw the game and I opened his PlayStation, and bang, I got the game and tried to tiptoe out.” Jeremih then spent the next hour and a half happily playing his beloved game, but the fun was short-lived: The guy’s roommate showed up at his door asking for the game back. “He was like, ‘Man, I know you’re in there! Give me my game!’ ” Jeremih recalls. “I didn’t say anything. I acted like I wasn’t in there.” Perhaps Jeremih thought his troubles would go away in the morning, but he thought wrong. When he woke up and tried to get out of his dorm room, he realized he couldn’t. His door had been glued shut. “I’m like, ‘Yo, what’s going on?’ So this whole time I’m beating on my door for hours, and I literally heard people walking past laughing, like, ‘Why is this dude knocking to get out of his dorm?’ ” Jeremih shares. And this is where the story gets crazier: “I didn’t have another choice, so I looked at the window. I was on the third floor, and luckily there was nothing but bushes, so I put on four coats, and that’s it. If I’m going, I’m going. I jumped out and landed right on the bushes.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Jeremih, Shay Mitchell and Ashley Fink — airs on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. Tyrese Recalls Ignoring His Earliest Critics On ‘When I Was 17’

The ‘Transformers’ star describes getting ‘gonged’ on this week’s show, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET. By Sterling Wong Tyrese on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News He may be a big-time Hollywood star now, with roles in upcoming blockbusters like “Fast Five” and “Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon,” but it turns out model/actor/singer Tyrese’s talents were not always appreciated. In this week’s “When I Was 17,” Tyrese confesses that he was once “gonged” while performing on his high school stage.+ “My music teacher would do these ‘gong’ [talent] shows, and basically, if you got up [onstage] to sing and you were horrible, then somebody would run up and hit the bell,” the star explains. “I remember I was in the middle of singing this Brian McKnight song, and somebody ran up and hit that sh– loud and it went gong!” Brandy, who’s a good friend of Tyrese, jokes, “I think Tyrese’s natural reaction was, ‘Are you serious?!’ ” His shocked reaction to the sound provoked much laughter from the audience. And even though the gong meant he was supposed to get off the stage, because of the support he received from the girls in the crowd (no surprises there!), he kept on going. “I finally had a conversation with the girl who hit the gong. I was just like, ‘Yo, man, why did you do that?’ And she was like, ‘Don’t get mad at me! Everybody told me to hit the gong, so I ran up and did it!’ ” Tyrese recalls. He was clearly not impressed with her answer. “I remember I gave her a dirty look, like, ‘Don’t you ever hit the gong again, OK?’ And I walked off.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Tyrese, Lupe Fiasco and Jessie J — airs this Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.
