Steve Slater Pleads Not Guilty, Flight Attendants Rally Around One of Their Own

Former JetBlue flight attendant Steve Slater pleaded not guilty in court today to charges of reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and criminal trespass stemming from his hilariously irate resignation yesterday afternoon. For those first learning of the story: around noon, Slater, a 20-year veteran of the industry, tried to calmly tell a woman on a flight to remain in her seat until the plane taxied to a complete stop. She responded by ignoring him and telling him to “f-ck off,” a gesture that caused Slater to snap. He got on the intercom, returned the expletives and slid down the emergency chute to safety… until cops picked him up at home a couple hours later. Using lame reasoning, district attorney DA Richard Brown argued the following in court: “The emergency chute deploys at 3,000 pounds per square inch within seconds and could easily injure or kill ground crews or others on the tarmac who are unaware the chute has been activated. This would have been a far different arraignment if someone had been standing under the emergency chute when it deployed.” In response, Slater’s lawyer simply wondered why his client was being prosecuted for a hypothetical: “There was no one below the window,” when the chute was released, Howard Turman said. Meanwhile, a Facebook page in Slater’s honor has been created – and it already has over 15,000 members! Just like a significant percentage of THG readers , many of them support Steven. Especially the fellow flight attendants. Wrote one: “Kudos to you, I am a former flight attendant and only wish I had the nerve to do what you did!!!!!!”

Mother of Steve Slater Comes to Defense of Former JetBlue Flight Attendant

Steven Slater is our hero. The irritated JetBlue Flight Attendant quit his job in hilarious, dramatic, illegal fashion yesterday, cursing off a passenger, grabbing two beers and exiting from a parked plane via its emergency slide. He’s since been arrested on charges of criminal mischief and reckless endangerment and might actually spend time in jail. As you might expect, Slater’s mother isn’t happy with this possibility. TMZ spoke to Slater’s ex-wife, Cynthia Susanne, who relayed his mom’s take on the situation. She confirms her son’s story that Steven “politely” asked a woman to return to her seat until the plane taxied to a full stop. In response, this individual cursed the flight attendant off and pulled down her bag from the overhead bin. Slater’s mom says her son described this action as “malicious.” The Slater family is also upset because a different passenger on the flight is making the media around today, trying to earn money off the incident, despite not even sitting anywhere close to the awful woman in question. Overall, it’s one of our favorite stories of the year. What do you think should happen to Steve Slater?

Dr. Conrad Murray: What a Life Saver!

Dr. Conrad Murray, the embattled former physician of Michael Jackson, gets a lot of press, most of it terrible. This time, though, we gotta give the doctor his due. He totally saved the day after he helped stabilize a 23-year-old mother who fell unconscious on a US Airways jet en route from Houston to Phoenix Saturday. The doctor stabilized the young woman by using the airplane’s emergency kit to set up an IV and monitored her until the plane diverted to Albuquerque, N.M. We can’t imagine he reassured her when he said “You probably know me, I was Michael Jackson’s doctor,” but regardless, Dr. Conrad Murray got the job done. Ironically, Murray was on his way to meet with his lawyers to plan a defense against involuntary manslaughter charges in the Michael Jackson case at the time. He has rejected any talk of a plea deal , making a trial likely. .500: Hey, 1-for-2 isn’t terrible… in baseball . The woman, who was traveling with her 11 month old baby, was met at the gate by paramedics and taken to a hospital. It is believed she has recovered fully. She responded by saying, “Thank you so much. Thank you for helping me even without knowing me.” A rep for Murray’s legal team, Miranda Sevcik, said: “We’re not surprised. [ Dr. Conrad Murray ] a good doctor, we’ve always said he was a good doctor, and that’s what good doctors do is save people’s lives.” Murray, 57, was charged in February with a felony count of involuntary manslaughter in MJ’s June 2009 death. He has pleaded not guilty, and is free on bail. He plans to argue that Michael Jackson killed himself with Propofol, with which Murray had been treating him for insomnia, while the doc was out of the room.
