Ten years ago, Rihanna hadn’t solidified her place in music, Beyoncé and Jay Z weren’t even parents yet and Kanye West was Kardashian-free. 2009 was a such a transitional year, too. It was the end of a decade, we lost Michael Jackson, and the death of autotune was on the rise. Music still had a little meaning and a little fun, and wasn’t so drug and club influenced just yet. Life was much simpler back then. @Only1Vlad: What a crazy roller coaster 2009 – 2019 has been thus far. An entire decade of ups and downs (like all of you). The most important takeaway I’ve really learned and took away from the past 10 years is – people aren’t always going to be in your life. So, hold on to memories. Source: Bennett Raglin / Getty Tuesday marks the two year anniversary #MeToo went viral bringing wider attention to victims of sexual assault and misconduct. Though 2017 was the viral moment, the #MeToo work has been carrying on since before 2017 thanks to founder Tarana Burke . For the movement’s two year anniversary, Burke is reflecting on its impact and how it’s shifted the ways people talk about sexual violence. In an interview with Teen Vogue , one standout moment came when Burke was asked about the “gray areas” of sexual assault and misconduct. One person who came to mind was Aziz Ansari , who was accused of sexual misconduct for repeatedly pressuring a woman to have sex. Eventually, Ansari issued a statement saying he took time to “process” the woman’s side of the story, and he also addressed the incident in his Netflix stand-up special “Aziz Ansari: Right Now”. Burke spoke on this and even brought up Dave Chappelle , who notoriously made jokes about Michael Jackson and child molestation in his latest Netflix special “Stick & Stones”. “Can I say something about that in terms of accountability,” Burke started. “I have been thinking a lot about Dave Chappelle and Aziz Ansari because they both have these comedy specials, right? And I know Dave Chappelle wasn’t accused of anything, whatever, but he decided he was just going to go down this road….But some people are not going to be comfortable with what I’m going to say. I’ve said this in places where people are like, ‘I don’t agree with you,’ but I think Aziz Ansari’s response… has anybody seen his stand-up? He didn‘t act like it didn’t happen. He talked very clearly about what his year’s been like, and not from a like, ‘Yo, this has been a really messed up year,’ but like, ‘what did I learn? What did I do? How did I try to make this situation, turn this situation around?’ He was humble.” Burke then went on to compare him to fellow comedian Louis C.K. who was also accused of sexual misconduct and is now trying to make a comeback. “And I said, you know, ‘Why can’t these other folks at least have some lessons,” Burke said. “I’m just so angry at the folks who kind of hide for six months, and then peek their head, like Louis C.K . Louis C.K. is an assh*le.” She continued: “And I’m going to tell you, he was one of my favorite comedians, right? I loved his show, I love Louis C.K., but you going to come back and start talking about transphobes, and children getting shot, what are we supposed to do?” Finally, Burke asserted: “And this is the thing about accountability with these public figures that I think they don’t get. You want my support, right? I don’t tell anybody what it should look like, but for me, when I think about accountability, you start with the person you harmed first. So before you bring your face out into the public or whatever, did you go to the people who you caused harm to and ask them what they need? Did you try to have a process, any kind of process, restorative process, with them? And they may say, “I don’t want that. I don’t want anything to do with you,” which is their right. But you have to start there. The second layer of that is, you want me to laugh at your jokes, buy your tickets, watch your specials, and you think you’re not accountable to me, and my values are not supposed to come into play on how I spend my money and my time? Earlier this week came the very upsetting news that Nick Carter took out a restraining order against Aaron Carter . It’s brother against brother, Nick accuses Aaron of threatening his pregnant wife. Aaron accuses NIck of gaslighting and abuse. Now, Aaron has accused his late sister, Leslie Carter, of sexually abusing him when he was just a child. Content warning for some very upsetting content including childhood sexual abuse, folks. “My sister Leslie suffered from bipolar and took lithium to treat it,” Aaron announced in a tweet on Thursday. Leslie passed away in 2012 after a drug overdose. She was Aaron’s older sister by one eyar. “She never liked the way it made her feel,” the troubled singer wrote of his late sister. “And when she was off of it she did things that she never meant to do,” Aaron accused. “I truly believe that,” he affirmed. “I was 10 years old.” If you had a sinking feeling in the core of your being from reading what Aaron already wrote … your suspicions are confirmed by his next tweet. “My sister raped me from the age of 10 to 13 years old when she wasn’t on her medications,” Aaron alleged on Twitter. “And I was absused not only sexually by her,” he continued. “But by my first two back up dancers when I was 8 years old.” “And,” Aaron added. “My brother absused me my whole life.” Aaron has spoken of Nick allegedly being violent towards him before, and even shown video evidence. This is all very distressing. “Now it’s nicks turn to tell the tell the truth,” Aaron challenged his estranged older brother. He demands that Nick speak “of what he did to one of the girls in my family.” Aaron doesn’t spell out what he means by that accusation, but the implications are alarming and disturbing. “Since my truth is all out there,” Aaron continued. “And,” he added. “I hope all survivors of assault or rape find peace and justice.” Aaron may be speaking openly of this on Twitter, but he has made it very clear that he wants to advocate for abuse survivors. In particular, he has shown a lot of support and sympathy for several women who have accused Nick of sexual and physical abuse. “Hi @wendywilliams,” Aaron tweeted with a request. “When you do your hot topic segment,” he asked. “Please recognize the 3 girls in Three states who filed police reports against my brother.” “There are three police reports in three states,” Aaron noted in another tweet. “Sad but true. Talk to the [women] who filed the reports.” Some have accused Aaron of deep hypocrisy, since it was only earlier this year that Aaron threatened a Michael Jackson accuser . When a follower brought that up, Aaron replied: “I apologized to them.” He has certainly shown more acceptance of the idea that the man who treated him so well during his teens may have behaved differently towards others. But that is not the only challenge to Aaron’s credibility. His history of erratic statements and behavior due to mental illness may work against him in any accusations that he makes, against Nick or against Leslie. Aaron has even had multiple welfare checks by police, including some because friends and loved ones feared he migh ttake his life. However, it is important to recognize that a person can have any number of mental illnesses and still speak the truth. In fact, some worry that these will be turned against Aaron in order to unfairly discredit him. The mini-movie is a cultural classic and the first of its kind to be directed by a Hollywood movie director, John Landis (National Lampoon’s Animal House). Not to mention it also cost half a million dollars to make, an unspeakable number in 80s. The 13-minute project is known for more than Jackson’s signature red jacket, dancing zombies, and his gorgeous but scared arm candy. Her name is Ola Ray. As it turns out, Justin Bieber has it all wrong. The singer recently opened up on Instagram about his struggle with mental health and how anxiety is destroying his life . This is mistaken, however. The artist is destroying his own life by saying really dumb and really insensitive things. Late on Friday, Bieber shared a tribute to Chris Brown, one that didn’t merely paint a rosy picture of the polarizing star… … but one that put Brown in the musical class of two all-time greats. In this Instagram post, Bieber published an image that featured the phrase “The Legendary Equation” at the top and included photos of Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur and Brown. “MJ plus 2 Pac equals CB,” the snapshot reads. This alone would have been controversial enough on its own. Michael Jackson is considered the King of Pop. Tupac is considered the greatest rapper of all-time. Is Brown really at their level? However, Bieber stepped into scalding hot water that extended far beyond one’s music taste when he went on to explain his reasoning here. “everyone wants to wait til people die To give them the credit they deserve. I’m calling it now when CB passes away after a long full life, you will miss what you had in front of you the whole time,” Bieber wrote as a caption to this picture, adding: trust me watch you will see. the people who have over looked this mans talent because of a mistake he made.. you need to reevaluate! Love you @chrisbrownofficial. You caught that, didn’t you? Bieber brushed off Brown’s infamous assault of Rihanna as a mere “mistake.” Brown, of course, beat his then-girlfriend bloody back in 2009. He slammed his fists into the singer’s face multiple times, eventually agreeing to a plea agreement that resulted in five years of probation and six months of community service and nothing more. In the many years since, Brown has been accused on other occasions of beating women and of flipping out in an extreme manner — sometimes with a gun . In other words: The Rihanna incident would have been enough of a reason to cancel Chris Brown forever, but he has shown in numerous other instances that it was far from a one-time mistake. The guy is a violent, entitled, dangerous thug. But Justin Bieber loves him! He has gushed about Brown often in the past , setting a truly terrible example for all of his young fans. And many social media users called him out this week for doing so. “Domestic abuse aint a mistake, especially when its done repeatedly. Im sick to my stomach, definitely unfollowing you, mad disappointed,” one person remarked. Another referenced wife Hailey Baldwin and added: “What if Rihanna was Hailey (sic)? Would you say the same?” “it wasn’t a mistake. it was a crime,” another individual wrote. Brown, as you might expected, reacted differently to Bieber’s kind words. “I love you man! Thank you for believing in me. Your star shines so bright and your heart is unmatched!” he wrote on Bieber’s post, concluding: “You are a king but more importantly you were here to inspire and create endless possibilities bro! I’m with ya till the wheels fall off and when they do .. we gone get some new wheels.” God, let’s hope not. In the last couple weeks following HBO airing Leaving Neverland — a two-part documentary that details Jackson’s alleged sexual abuse on minors–it seems like half the world is calling for a boycott of Michael’s music while the other half is vehemently defending him. Most recently, fellow musician Will.i.am weighed in on the controversy and people calling for a boycott, claiming it’s hypocritical for some very strange reasons. The Black Eyed Peas alum addressed those who have chosen to stop playing MJ’s music with a reference to the Holocaust. He explained why this latest scandal presents a double standard, saying that some are accountable for their crimes of the past, while others aren’t–specifically mentioning German firm Bayer, which he said made chemicals to “to kill all the Jews.” “We live in a very, very, very, very hypocritical, double-standard, fake society,” the artist said, according to the Evening Standard . “I can name a thousand other products that we still buy, still use, that are owned by folks that have done the most horrendous things to people, millions of them, and we don’t take their products from the market.” He continued, saying: “Bayer is really responsible for chemicals that killed millions of people but they’re headache medicine now. Are you going to ridicule them for their past? Imagine every country that ever had slaves, people said never travel to those countries because of what they’ve done in the past. Are you not supposed to do anything with anyone who ever did anything ill in the past? England, Spain, Portugal. That’s not that long ago. Are there reparations for everyone who’s done something ill? I could name a thousand more ills that are worse but we’re going to pull songs?” Even though Will.i.am is clearly in defense of Michael and continuing to play his music, the artist doesn’t exactly seem sure that he’s actually innocent. He went on to say, “I’m torn, because that’s not the Michael Jackson I loved and will always love. It is a smear campaign, there’s been a number of smear campaigns in the past. If he did it, it’s sad and inhumane. If he didn’t, what’s happening is sad, and inhumane.” Comparing a brand that makes medication with Michael Jackson and his lone choices and actions is a very odd choice, but it looks like Will.i.am is sticking to it.
