Bey Gone: Haitians Slam Beyoncé’s Visit As An Insulting “Celebrity Photo Op”

Haitians Criticize Beyoncé’s Trip As Futile Celeb Photo Op Sak pase? Via NYTimes The American Embassy in Haiti wanted to show a notable visitor — in this case, the pop superstar Beyoncé — some of the progress made since the 2010 earthquake. So it did what many people do: turned to Facebook this weekend to ask for advice from the 119,000 people who have “liked” its page. It ended up with a lesson in the perils of crowdsourcing, especially for a government whose long history in the country always fires up passions. Many took the occasion to post skepticism with the parade of such celebrity visits and frustration with the pace of rebuilding in Haiti, reflecting the strong sentiment there that things could be a lot better five years later. “Just another celebrity photo opportunity,” griped one user, La’Keba Garcia, who said she was a frequent visitor to Haiti. The user Dous Makòs, said Beyoncé should go, “Nowhere, because there’s no progress.” The embassy did not answer a query about its post and whether Beyoncé had taken up any recommendations. She visited Haiti over the weekend with Valerie Amos, the United Nations humanitarian affairs chief, but the full itinerary was not disclosed. In a Tweet on Monday afternoon, the U.N. agency said the two had visited patients at a pediatric hospital and earthquake survivors. American officials have struggled to convince people that progress is being made after a quake that took 300,000 lives and left millions without homes. These social media campaigns go left just about EVERY time. When will they learn? SMH. Wonder if Bey Bey made one of those infamous clandestine Carter donations… Image via Instagram
