The years come and go, but one Texas teacher’s vintage ’70s outfit lived on in every single yearbook photo he posed for during his 40-year tenure. Dale Irby, 63, retired this year as an elementary school teacher, capping off a terrific career in education and an amazing four-decade fashion statement. It started off purely by accident, he says. “I was so embarrassed when I got the pictures back that second year and realized that I had worn the very same thing as the first year,” Irby recalled. But Irby’s wife thought it was funny, and urged him to keep going in the third year, and then the fourth. Once five came around, he figured: “Why stop?” Forty years later, the outfit has outlasted the store and the physical mall where he bought it, but the shirt still fits, says Irby , “if I suck it in a little.”
