On the recent Iceland volcanic event, two of the country’s airports closed on Friday for the first time, the Icelandic volcano forced shutdown on airspace over some of Europe and stranded thousands of passengers around the world. The Keflavik International Airport and Reykjavik International Airport closed early morning. Though the ash cloud originated in Iceland, the country’s airports have been spared from closure until now. Strong winds from the northwest had been blowing the ash from the volcano towards the south of Iceland and onto the sea and over Europe. Two other Icelandic International airports, in Akureyi and Egilsstadir, will stay open for air traffic since the ash clouds is not expected to reach those cities, which are in the north and east of island nation.
