Sleigh Bells’ ‘Comeback Kid’ Video Is Candy-Colored Chaos

First clip from band’s Reign of Terror album grabs, throttles and leaves you begging for more. By James Montgomery Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss in their “Comeback Kid” video Photo: Mom & Pop So there’s not exactly a ton of wanton violence or bizarre high school fetishism in Sleigh Bells ‘ brand-new “Comeback Kid” video (though the threat of both certainly exists throughout), but as the dynamic duo prepare to release the follow-up to their breakout Treats album — appropriately titled Reign of Terror — you can take solace in the fact that they’re not straying too far from what got them to this point. In a sense, “Comeback Kid” only expands on both the Bells’ signature sound (Alexis Krauss’ saccharine coos coupled with Derrick Miller’s shifty shredding, with trilling, thrilling electronic ephemera tossed in for good measure) and their look. They’re both rocking Ray-Bans and Krauss’ bangs are as blocky as ever (though, as the video reveals, she may have gone blond). They effortlessly pair letterman jackets and Nirvana T-shirts with DayGlo Daisy Dukes and studded leather jackets. The video recalls ’80s teen romp comedies, all proof that, like its music, the band has not met an era it couldn’t incorporate … with maximum impact, of course. So, while there are a grand total of zero explosions in the “Comeback” video (unlike “Infinity Guitars”), and while neither member of the band shoves the other out of a speeding car (that would be the basic plot behind “Rill Rill”), the new video is a logical successor to both those clips. It’s a whirling collection of eye-catching, seemingly disparate imagery — Krauss jumping on a bed while cradling a rifle, dreamy beachscapes, suburban skateboarding, a winking dog, grocery store high jinks — that all builds to a candy-colored climax. Like they proved with the (thoroughly awesome) teaser trailer for Terror, Sleigh Bells definitely know how to make a music video, and “Comeback Kid” is just the latest example. It doesn’t have to make a whole lot of sense — or, really, any sense — to grab you, throttle you, and leave you begging for more. What did you think of the “Comeback Kid” video? Sleigh Bells Promise ‘Flying,’ Unitards For Woodies Performance

Band shares stage with Foo Fighters, Wiz Khalifa, others at 2011 mtvU Woodies, airing live at midnight Wednesday. By Matt Harper, with reporting by James Montgomery Sleigh Bells with James Montgomery in Austin, Texas Photo: Matt Harper/MTV News AUSTIN, Texas — With a list of performers that includes not only Wiz Khalifa and insane L.A. rap collective Odd Future but the freakin’ Foo Fighters too, the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards are shaping up to be a can’t-miss show. So much so that you’ve got to feel sorry for some of the other acts on the bill … they’ve really got to step it up. Luckily, one of those acts, Brooklyn bashers Sleigh Bells , are up to the task. Or at least they sound like they are. Because when MTV News caught up with the dynamic duo on Tuesday during Woodies rehearsals, they were more than willing to reveal the details of their big performance. “I’m coming down on wires,” guitarist/producer Derek E. Miller laughed. “Yes, Derek is flying around, he’s wearing a unitard,” singer Alexis Krauss added. Of course, when we mentioned we had some doubts about the wire work (and the unitard), the Bells quickly recanted. But they weren’t about to say what their performance would actually feature. “There’s definitely some surprises,” Krauss said, playing it coy. “We haven’t said anything about it so I don’t really want to say anything more than we’ve said … if that made any sense.” Not really, but hey … If all goes according to plan, Krauss and Miller won’t just be hitting the stage for their secretive performance, they might be making an acceptance speech too. They’re nominated for the Breaking Woodie award — up against the likes of Local Natives, Wavves, Dev and Two Door Cinema Club — and win or lose, they’re planning on making the night memorable. “Obviously it would feel good to win,” Krauss said, diplomatically. “It would be fun, but if we don’t, it’s OK …” “[If we lose,] then I’m just gonna burn the place down,” Miller laughed. The 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards will air live on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU on Wednesday, March 16, at midnight (ET/PT) from the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Sleigh Bells On MTV’s Musical March Madness: ‘Expect The Unexpected’

Tournament tips off Monday, and the Brooklyn duo like their chances. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rya Backer Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss Photo: Michael Burnell/Redferns Much like the actual March Madness tournament, MTV’s second annual Musical March Madness brackets are filled with upstart bands looking to shock the world. Everywhere you looked this year, there were unknown acts making big moves — everyone from Mumford & Sons and Florence and the Machine to the Black Keys and Cage the Elephant — but perhaps no band went from obscurity to the big time quite like Sleigh Bells. The Brooklyn duo broke out with their squalling, squelching debut Treats. So it should probably come as no surprise that, as we gear up for the tipoff of the 2011 MMM on Monday, the Bells are making preparations for a deep run in the tournament. And, in keeping with the spirit of dark-horse contenders like the Butler Bulldogs (who came within a desperation 3-point heave of upsetting Duke in the 2010 NCAA finals), they’re entering firmly as underdogs — which suits them just fine. “We are definitely an underdog,” singer Alexis Krauss laughed. “I don’t know … it’s a bit overwhelming. But I’m appealing to you as the underdog to try and go out at least fighting a good fight.” And, really, that battling spirit is perhaps Sleigh Bells’ best shot at making their way to the MMM championship. They already know they’ll face tough challenges from established acts like Linkin Park and Panic! at the Disco and up-and-comers like Adele , and if they survive that, they might just run into defending champs Coheed and Cambria in the finals. But as Krauss put it, underdog or not, her band possesses a trait that none of the other MMM bands have: Namely, a lot of weapons. And genuine psychosis. “Have you seen our videos? In my first video, I was walking around wielding a baseball bat. In my second video, I was pushing [guitarist/producer] Derek [Miller]out of a car, and he was covered in blood. So clearly we have some tricks up our sleeves,” she explained. “Derek, he knows his basketball, he knows his stuff. We already have jerseys made; we’re ready to go. So, I don’t know, expect the unexpected. And we may not just use basketballs, we may use baseball bats and switchblades. Who knows? We’re psychos.” MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it’ll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get ready, it’s gonna be a war. Related Videos MTV’s Musical March Madness Is Back For 2011
