Conan O’Brien’s Fox Deal Threatened By Affiliate Concerns

Fox channels currently air well-performing sitcoms during late-night slot Conan is eyeing for new show. By Eric Ditzian Conan O’Brien kicks off his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television tour on Monday night (April 12), almost three months after leaving “The Tonight Show.” At the same time that he’s set to start slinging jokes onstage instead of in front of the camera, his reps are making progress with plans to launch a new late-night show on Fox . But talks between the two camps face obstacles from Fox affiliates, according to The Hollywood Reporter — obstacles that could ultimately disrupt a deal for an hour-long show that would air at 11 p.m. Right now, Fox affiliates and Fox-owned stations usually air syndicated sitcoms from 11 p.m. to midnight . If the affiliates begin airing Conan’s show, they’ll still be on the hook to pay for syndicated deals already in place, as well as having to pay retransmission fees to air the network’s feed. What’s more, the syndicated shows, like “Seinfeld” and “The Simpsons,” perform well; if Conan’s show does not do well in the ratings, the affiliates might start to grumble. “The question is how much can one network ask of its affiliates?” an unnamed inside source told THR. Despite these affiliate concerns, talks between Fox and O’Brien’s people have progressed in recent days. Both camps agree that the program would air at 11 p.m., 30 minutes before Jay Leno and David Letterman’s shows but at the same time as Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show.” The show would be based in Los Angeles. O’Brien has agreed to lower his salary and cut production costs. The new program’s budget would be significantly less than it was for his “Tonight Show” stint. Including O’Brien’s $12 million salary, the NBC show cost about $90 million a year to produce. The Fox show would have a budget of less than $60 million. “It will be leaner and meaner,” another unnamed source said. Other sticking points remain. Conan won’t sign an agreement unless Fox guarantees that the show will be broadcast on the vast majority of Fox stations. Like Letterman, Conan wants to own his show rather than work for Fox, but Fox wants to keep Conan as its employee. But the key to the deal will rest with the affiliates, some of whose owners will be in-house when Conan takes the stage in Eugene, Oregon, on Monday.

Drake’s ‘Over’ Video Shows Struggle Between ‘My Past Life And This New Life’

New video shows Drake torn between a wholesome beauty and a seductive dancer. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Drake in his “Over” music video Photo: Universal Motown/ Young Money No more waiting; the video for Drake’s “Over” has finally arrived premiered on Vevo Monday morning (April 12). The clip starts off with Drake, dressed in white, sitting in a room on a bed, reflecting on how his life his now. Images of explosions and time-lapsed cityscapes are projected on him and the wall of the room. From there, he launches into a heavy performance. “This is my first video,” Drake said on the set of “Over” in early March, though he’s made clips for “Successful,” “Best I Ever Had” and some of his guest stints. “I’ve shot a lot of videos before, but this is my first attempt to establish myself as Drake the artist. Shooting the other videos I’ve done has been great. I really don’t care what other people think about them, they were great experiences for me. I’ve learned a lot from them. Today, I’m shooting with somebody I really look up to and respect. I’m shooting with Anthony Mandler. “We talked colors, we talked epic, emotion-evoking visuals,” he added. “The story is actually interesting. The song is so aggressive, and it’s sort of a love story in the video. It has a lot to do with the album [ Thank Me Later ]. The album is about finding love, feeling, ‘Have I sold my soul?’ as far as, ‘Will I ever be able to gain the trust of a woman? Will I only be able to be around the dark, evil women? Will I ever find that pure love?’ Those elements are in the video. I look strong, I feel great, my knee’s feeling great . I’m jumping around, doing all kinds of stuff.” Toward the end of the video, it looks like Drake has to choose between two beautiful women. One, played by Roc Nation singer Rita Ora, looks like a more wholesome girl, while the other lady looks more dangerous as she dances provocatively in the background. “It takes the song to another place,” Drake said of the video last week on the night on the opening night of his Away From Home Tour . “It offers up a whole different look for the song. The song — to a lot of people — is ignorant, it’s club. This video is what I was really thinking about. The song is like a bad dream — but it’s not a bad dream, it’s not a terrible dream. It’s a little evil. The video really reflects that. It’s a struggle between the purities of my past life and what this new life has to offer. Even in the video, you see me looking back and forth between the two and deciding. At the end of the video I don’t necessarily make a decision, but when you get the album, you’ll see what choice I make.” Related Artists Drake

Drake Introduces ‘Drake The Artist’ In ‘Over’ Video

‘I’ve shot a lot of videos before, but this is my first attempt to establish myself as Drake the artist,’ he tells MTV News on the clip’s set. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Kelly Marino Drake Photo: MTV News While filming a video for his song “Over” on Friday in Los Angeles, Drake stood in front of an all-white backdrop wearing a white tee and white sneakers. What does he do in the clip? He does him. “This is my first video,” the Young Money franchise player said, sitting in his trailer. I’m shooting with Anthony Mandler.” Mandler, who has also made videos with Jay-Z and Rihanna, worked with Drake before on Mary J. Blige’s “The One.” “We talked colors, we talked epic, emotion-evoking visuals,” the 23-year-old Toronto native said of the collaborative “Over” video. “The story is actually interesting. The song is so aggressive, and it’s sort of a love story in the video. It has a lot to do with the album [ Thank Me Later ]. The album is about finding love, feeling ‘Have I sold my soul’ as far as ‘Will I ever be able to gain the trust of a woman? Will I only be able to be around the dark, evil women? Will I ever find that pure love?’ Those elements are in the video. I look strong, I feel great, my knee’s feeling great . I’m jumping around, doing all kinds of stuff.” The song “Over” touches on Drake reaction to fame and stardom. ” ‘Over’ was definitely a choice of mine,” he said of releasing it as a single. “I’ve got a lot of great songs on the album. A lot of songs that sound familiar but are brand-new. I still got the same emotions of the songs you love, whether it be ‘Say Something’ or ‘Best I Ever Had’ or ‘Bedrock.’ For people who enjoy what I’ve done in the past, I’ve got a lot of songs to cater to them. But ‘Over’ was a song I did for myself. “We took a trip to Jamaica, where I did a lot of work for my album,” he elaborated. “There was this calm before the storm, and ‘Over’ represented the storm to me. It’s the moment. I wanted to emerge at first from this album and just let people know ‘This is how I’m coming out in the public eye. I’m ready for anything.’ Then when you get the album, it’s like, ‘Oh, he’s still human. He’s still thinking the same way.’ I wanted people to understand I could have lost it. ‘Over’ could have been my entire album. Just ’cause that’s what this industry and game will do to you if you lose yourself.” Are you excited for Drake’s “Over” video? Let us know! Related Artists Drake
