Dale Earnhardt Jr. Survives Plane Crash: See the Intense Footage!

In a word? Wow. In two more words? Thank. Goodness. On Thursday afternoon, Dale Earnhardt Jr, — the beloved NASCAR driver and auto racing analyst — and his wife were involved in a private jet crash in east Tennessee, thankfully managing to escape serious injury. According to Elizabethton Fire Chief Barry Carrier, via CNN affiliate WJHL, Earnhardt and his wife, Amy, were on a small jet that crashed at Elizabethton Municipal Airport around 3:38 p.m. EST. In the footage posted featured on this page, you can see the plane go up in a whirl of smoke shortly after landing. Multiple outlets have confirmed that  the vehicle skidded off the runway immediately upon touching down. An investigation is currently underway and the National Transportation Safety Board is expected to determine a cause of the crash, but we can at least report that the popular athlete is doing just fine. “Everyone is safe and has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” Tweeted Dale's sister, Kelly, shortly after news of accident went viral. She added: “We have no further information at this time. Thank you for your understanding,” The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that two pilots and three passengers were aboard the aircraft. (UPDATE: We can now report that the couple's one-year old daughter, Isla, was also on the plane. She was the third passenger.) The fire that resulted from the crash burned for about 20 minutes before authorities arrived on the scene and put it out. In 2017, the 44-year old Earnhardt was voted as NASCAR's most popular driver for the 15th straight year. Yes, 15th straight year. Fans adore this guy. The son of the late racing icon Dale Earnhardt, he now works as a NASCAR analyst for NBC. Said A network spokesperson: “We are aware of the media reports and have been in contact with Dale's team. We'll have no further comment until we have more details.” As of this writing, Dale, his daughter and his wife have been discharged from the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery. Dale Earnhardt Sr., for whatever it is worth died at age 49 of injuries sustained in a race car crash during the 2001 Daytona 500. Yesterday, we brought you the top 15 highest-earning American athletes, but there are still a few of our favorite ballers worth mentioning. Sports Illustrated Top 50 Highest Paid American Athletes Honorable Mentions This year’s list is unique for a couple more reasons. NBA players, who have historically claimed more spots in the Fortunate 50 than any other group, had their salaries slashed by nearly 20 percent this season because of the 66-game schedule brought on by the lockout of 2011. Our findings consisted solely of salary, winnings, bonuses, endorsements and appearance fees. We consulted players’ associations, tour records, agents and news reports. Our endorsement estimates for 2012 came from Burns Entertainment & Sports Marketing, other sports-marketing executives and analysts, and agents. Salary figures were based on current or most recently completed seasons (July 1 for the NFL, which is why Drew Brees, who just signed a $100 million deal last Friday, isn’t on the list). For winnings-based sports (auto racing, golf, tennis), we used the 2011 calendar year. Boxing purses are from June 2011 through May 2012. Candidates for the U.S. 50 had to be American citizens and currently active in their sports. It’s not as those athletes that didn’t make the top 15 are hurtin’ for a buck. FDA Approves First Drug Proven To Reduce The Risk Of HIV Infection A breakthrough in the fight against HIV was announced earlier today. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved the first drug shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection, a milestone in the 30-year battle against the virus that causes AIDS. The agency approved Gilead Sciences’ pill Truvada as a preventive measure for people who are at high risk of acquiring HIV through sexual activity, such as those who have HIV-infected partners. Public health advocates say the approval could help slow the spread of HIV, which has held steady at about 50,000 new infections per year for the last 15 years. An estimated 1.2 million Americans have HIV, which develops into AIDS unless treated with antiviral drugs. With an estimated 240,000 HIV carriers unaware of their status, doctors and patients say new methods are needed to fight the spread of the virus. Gilead Sciences Inc. has marketed Truvada since 2004 as a treatment for people who are already infected with the virus. But starting in 2010, studies showed that the drug could actually prevent people from contracting HIV when used as a precautionary measure. A three-year study found that daily doses cut the risk of infection in healthy gay and bisexual men by 42 percent, when accompanied by condoms and counseling. Last year another study found that Truvada reduced infection by 75 percent in heterosexual couples in which one partner was infected with HIV and the other was not. Awesome news! Source
