The Voice Recap: Let the Battles Commence!

The Voice Season 8 began this fall’s epic Battle Rounds with contestants dueling it out for survival, with everything at stake in mano a mano duels. Well, assuming no superstar throws them a lifeline. Thank goodness for the steal – coaches can grab defeated singers, two apiece, in this round – because without them, this would be unfair. With the singers feeding off of one another and lending their respective strengths to the duet as a whole, instantly eliminating one is cruel. Even if there’s a clear victor, knowing that the steal is in play allows us to focus on what a thoroughly creative and entertaining format this is. The Voice Recap: The Battles Conclude!

The Battle Rounds are complete, as The Voice’s coaches finalized their teams for the knockout rounds on Tuesday with some terrific final duets. The coaches how have eight singers apiece headed into next week’s Knockout Round. Kicking things off last night? Cathia and Mary Miranda … Cathia vs. Mary Miranda – The Voice Battle Round In a bold move, Shakira pitted Bronx native Cathia, an aspiring Latina pop star, against Cuban-born Mary using her own song, “Antes Des Las Seis.” Usher, the only coach who had an available steal, used it to nab Cathia after Mary emerged triumphant. Elsewhere on the final night of Battles … Duncan Kamakana vs. Sarah Simmons – The Voice Battle Round Adam Levine paired Sarah Simmons with Duncan Kamakana on Lady Antebellum’s “Wanted You More,” with Lady A’s own Hillary Scott as assistant coach. Sarah ended up winning the battle and widespread praise. Brandon Roush vs. Shawna P. – The Voice Battle Round The evening also pitted the oldest competitor, Shawna P., 45, against one of the youngest, Brandon Roush, 19. They sang “Piece of My Heart.” This time, experience won out. Shakira picked Shawna. Justin vs. Morgan Twins, Amy vs. Agina & Michelle vs. Chelsea – The Voice Finally, Adam chose Amy Whitcomb over Agina Alvarez; Blake chose Justin Rivers over the Morgan Twins; and Usher picked Michelle Chamuel over Chelsea M.
