Sarah Burke, X-Games Champion Skier, Dead at 29

Sarah Burke, a four-time X-Games champion, has passed away from injuries sustained during a training run last week. She was 29. The Canadian crashed in Park City, Utah on January 10 and, according to reports, fell into cardiac arrest soon after. She was airlifted to a hospital and underwent surgery to repair a tear in a significant artery before being placed in a medically-induced coma on life support. But it was all too much and Burke lost her battle earlier today due to a lack of oxygen to her brain, doctors said. She was surrounded by family and friends when she died and donated her organs and tissues. Sarah is survived her husband of two years, skier Rory Bushfield. “Sarah, in many ways, defines the sport,” said Peter Judge, the CEO of Canada’s freestyle team, prior to her death. “She’s been involved since the very, very early days as one of the first people to bring skis into the pipe. She’s also been very dedicated in trying to define her sport but not define herself by winning. For her, it’s been about making herself the best she can be rather than comparing herself to other people.”

Sarah Burke, Pioneering Freestyle Skier, Dies At 29

By Kara Warner Sarah Burke Photo: Richard Bord/ Getty Images Professional skier and Olympic hopeful Sarah Burke died Thursday (January 19) following an accident during a training run on the superpipe in Park City, Utah, on January 11; Burke had been in a coma since the crash. Burke’s publicist confirmed the news of her death to People magazine. The freestyle skier’s death comes just one week after she underwent successful surgery to repair a torn vertebral artery that caused bleeding between her brain and skull. Despite the success of the procedure, Burke remained in a coma. Hospital officials told the magazine that Burke suffered a ruptured artery, which caused her to go into cardiac arrest. She sustained irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood and never regained consciousness. According to a statement from her parents, sister and husband Rory Bushfield obtained by People, Burke died “peacefully surrounded by those she loved” and her organs and tissues were donated, per the skier’s wishes. The family also expressed their “heartfelt gratitude” in the statement, for the “international outpouring of support they have received from all the people Sarah touched.” The 29-year-old Canadian was considered a pioneer in women’s free skiing, “The Godmother” of the sport according to the Ski Channel . She was an eight-time X-Games medalist and an Olympic hopeful for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Burke’s family has reportedly received a substantial number of inquiries from people asking how they can offer support and make a donation on behalf of Burke. By Kara Warner Billy Burke Photo: MTV News It’s been awhile now since we’ve had any updates from the castmembers of the highly anticipated “Breaking Dawn” two-part finale. Thus far this year, there have been steamy bedroom photos , talk of Kristen Stewart’s impressive transformation into a vampire and Peter Facinelli’s thoughts on an epic vampire-on-vampire battle scene at the end of Part 2. When MTV News caught up with “Breaking Dawn” supporting player Billy Burke recently, he reluctantly gave us the vaguest of answers when we asked about his favorite filming moment so far. “We are having a lot of fun,” Burke said while doing press for his upcoming violent thriller “Drive Angry.” “We’re in the midst of that now.” Burke, who plays the (mostly) blissfully ignorant father Charlie to Kristen Stewart’s Bella, said his character is up to the same old tricks in the final two “Twilight” films. “I go back in about a week to continue my job in that movie,” he said. “Which is being oblivious to everything that’s going on with vampires and werewolves.” Those familiar with the vampire films will agree that this is a fair and accurate assessment of his character’s story line. Still, we assumed that surely Burke has been privy to a few fun details, so we asked whether his character, Charlie Swan, finds out that his daughter has become a vampire in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” “In the first part? No,” Burke revealed. “That’s no secret, [for] those who have read the books,” he explained. What about Bella’s wedding dress? Has he seen that yet? “No,” Burke said with finality, declining to divulge any more “Dawn” details.
