Ariel Castro Sentenced to Life Plus 1,000 Years in Prison

Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison today, one week after he pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty. The court in Cuyahoga County (Oh.) is seizing the property of the criminal and imposing a fine of $100,000 on him, in addition to his massive sentence. Ariel Castro Sentencing “There is no place in this city, there is no place in this country, there is no place in this world for those who enslave others,” Judge Michael Russo told him. “A person can only die in prison once,” Russo added of the mammoth sentence, which he said was “commensurate with the harm” done by Ariel Castro. Russo, noting how Castro treated victims, said consecutive sentences rendered in his case must be “imposed” to protect the public and “to punish you.” “You don’t deserve to be out in our community. You’re too dangerous.” Speaking at his sentencing hearing, Castro turned around in the courtroom and glanced at family members of the victims. “I am truly sorry,” he said. “Thank you victims. Please find it in your heart to forgive me,” he said at the end of his statement, but the judge and the victims were quite unmoved. Ariel Castro took issue with the aggravated murder charge related to the allegation that his abuse terminated the pregnancy of one of his victims. He said there was no evidence that the incident ever occurred; Castro did plead guilty to that and nearly 400 counts of kidnapping and rape, however. When Judge Russo reminded him that he pleaded guilty, Castro said he did so only to save his three female victims further psychological trauma. Castro tried to argue that he is “sick” and not a monster as portrayed, but Russo countered that he fits the very definition of a “violent sexual predator.” Russo said Castro admitted this as well “by virtue of your plea.” Noting that Castro had an “outwardly” normal relationship with a girlfriend, Russo said it’s clear “you are able to choose who you wish to victimize.” Tragically, he victimized Amanda Berry , Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight for a decade, chaining them in his basement and raping them repeatedly. Knight spoke out at the hearing today, along with investigators who outlined some of the graphic discoveries they made inside the dungeon Castro called home: Michelle Knight Speaks at Ariel Casto Sentencing Graphic Evidence Revealed at Castro Sentencing A thousand years can’t help them heal, but it’s a good start.

Ariel Castro Charged With Rape, Kidnapping of Three Rescued Ohio Women

Ariel Castro has been charged with rape and kidnapping after three women missing for about a decade were found alive at his home on Monday. Castro appeared in court Thursday morning, handcuffed. He didn’t speak and looked down the entire time. Bond was set at $2 million on each case. Neighbor Charles Ramsey heard cries for help and aided their escape this week, leading to the stunning rescue of the girls who vanished from 2002-04. The women – Amanda Berry , Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight – were found alive after a decade in captivity leading lonely, dark lives in a dingy home. They were routinely raped and allowed outside only a handful of times in disguises while walking to a garage steps away, investigators believe. Castro, a 52-year-old former school bus driver, has emerged as the lone suspect. His two brothers were also arrested; it is unclear what charges they face. Many questions remain about how Castro maintained such tight control over the women for so many years before one of them made a daring escape . The horrors they suffered are beginning to come to light, however. Police say the women were bound by ropes and chains at times and were kept in different rooms, subjected to prolonged sexual and psychological abuse. Castro is charged with four counts of kidnapping, covering the captives and a daughter born to Berry, and three counts of rape, against all three women. Cleveland 19 Action News reporter Scott Taylor says he received a copy of a letter from 2004 that was found in the home, presumably written by Castro. Says Taylor: “I just got a copy of a letter written by Ariel Castro in 2004. Cops found it in his house. He says ‘I am a sexual predator. I need help.'” “‘They are here against their will because they made a mistake of getting in a car with a stranger. I don’t know why I kept looking for another. I already had 2 in my possession.’” Castro writes about wanting to kill himself and “give all the money I saved to my victims,” as well as how he is surprised at how young DeJesus was.
