Is this just as bad or worse than the Dakota Fanning Marc Jacobs ad also banned in the UK? British clothing line Drop Dead is the most recent company to come under fire by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority – this time, for featuring an overly thin model in its ads. The model, who dons a colorful two-piece in the controversial advertisements, is “underweight and looked anorexic,” according to the ASA assessment. Furthermore, the ASA said in a statement: “In the bikini images her hip, rib and collar bones were highly visible. We also noted that in the bikini and denim shorts images, hollows in her thighs were noticeable and she had prominent thigh bones. “We considered that in combination with the stretched out pose and heavy eye makeup, the model looked underweight in the pictures.” The ASA also pointed to the fact that the clothing company targets a young audience, meaning that the ads could possibly warp young girls’ perceptions of a healthy body image. The media watchdog is banning the ads in the UK. In its defense, Drop Dead reponded that its model “was a standard size eight…[and] while many people in the UK may find a size eight too slim, a size eight was a normal UK clothing size.” The company also called the ASA’s accusations “unreasonable.” But Drop Dead is just the latest in a slew of fashion and beauty brands that have recently been criticized by the ASA. Earlier this week, Marc Jacobs’ Oh, Lola! fragrance was banned after the ASA likened the Dakota Fanning-helmed ad to child pornography. Fanning is 17, but looks younger in the advertisements. L’Oreal ads featuring an overly photoshopped Julia Roberts and Christy Turlington were also pulled after the ASA took issue with what they deemed an issue of “honesty” earlier this year. Where’s the beef? Or rather, where are the cotdamn cakes!?! That’s definitely our beef. This model is definitely on the bony side, but is it any worse than the majority of images young girls see?
