Fantastic Fest’s comedy division is known, appropriately enough, as “Gut Busters”, and while this year there were a few movies that promised all manner of profanity, nothing reached the hilariously obscene heights of last year’s Klown (2010). Festival Report: Fantastic Fest, Part 4
If you’re not familiar with Japanese director Noboru Iguchi, here’s all you need to know: his filmography includes the titles Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead (2011), Mutant Girls Squad (2010), and RoboGeisha (2008). Certifiably obsessed with farts and poop (his segment in The ABCs of Death , “F is for Fart”, is about a girl who dies in ecstasy smelling her female teacher’s farts) this low-budget genre master got his start in AV movies before making the transition to the mainstream (as mainstream as he’s ever gonna get, anyway) with Sukeban Boy (2006), starring topless model Asami as a boy who looks so much like a girl, his father sends him to an all-girls high school. All that T&A could have fooled us! Iguchi’s new movie is Dead Sushi (2012), a light-hearted and frequently hilarious horror-comedy about an inn under attack by killer mutant sushi. Yeah, like spicy tuna. Iguchi says he was inspired to make Dead Sushi by Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978) and Jaws (1975), which if you think about it–a Japanese guy combining killer fish and killer food– makes perfect and complete sense. The same can’t be said for the movie, but trust us– we mean that in the best way possible. Up and coming karate star Rina Takeda stars as Keiko, whose sushi chef father kicks her out of the house because women’s hands are too warm to really make good sushi. So Keiko gets a job at a remote inn, but when a drifter with a bad wig and a chip on his shoulder shows up and injects dinner with a radioactive serum, the metal guitar starts shredding and bloody martial arts mayhem ensues. Dead Sushi isn’t trying to be anything profound, but it must have been a ton of fun to make. It certainly is to watch. At one point a piece of sushi rips a guy’s throat out, and at another woman’s face is mangled by a piece of sushi; the guy watching doesn’t try to help her, but reaches out for one last grope at her boobs before she dies. Iguchi regular Asami shows up in a non-nude role as the mistress of the inn, fans of Japanese girls in their underwear will be more than satisfied, and there’s an absolutely gratuitous scene where AV star Marin goes topless as she prepares for a bath, blissfully unaware of the soon-to-be-dead pervert watching her from the tub. Silly, sexy and completely over-the-top, Dead Sushi (2012) is a movie that speaks to the perverted 12-year-old boy in all of us. We’ve seen a lot of movies this week here at Fantastic Fest, but there’s one in particular we’d like to spotlight for fans of pulpy, sexy action fun: Bring Me the Head of the Machine Gun Woman (2012) from Chilean director Ernesto Diaz Espinoza . Bring Me the Head… captures the “anything can happen” spirit of classic exploitation better than anything we’ve seen since Hobo with a Shotgun (2011). Espinoza is a specialist in what he calls “LatinXploitation”, low-budget movies about assassins and vigilantes shot guerrila-style on the streets of Santiago. His use of ’70s style graphics and AfterEffects “film grain” isn’t unique in the Grindhouse (2007) school, but in Bring Me the Head… he adds a fun new element. The film is structured like a game of Grand Theft Auto, down to the matching font on the title cards that begin each new “mission,” a schtick that keeps the film moving at a brisk, exciting pace. Bring Me the Head… is the story of a hapless nightclub DJ who stumbles his way into a very dangerous mission: apprehending the assassin known as the Machine Gun Woman, played by Chilean TV star Fernanda Urrejola , in only 24 hours. The stunning, machine-gun toting Fernanda (left) is a masochist’s wet dream in this movie. She spends the entire film clad in a latex bra, hot pants, fishnet stockings, and spike-heeled stripper boots as she shoots, stomps and seduces her way from the bloody opening to the even bloodier climax.When Fernanda deep-throated a gun 32 minutes into the movie, an audible shudder ran through the theater. And if that’s not enough for you, Paloma Scheider and Salome Silva toplessly tango in a nightclub six minutes in, and at the Q&A Espinoza revealed that he had shot over an hour of topless tango footage for that one scene. You’re all right by us, Ernesto! Bring Me the Head of the Machine Gun Woman is currently on the film festival circuit, so if a screening pops up at a theater near you, we can guarantee you this: if you’re a regular reader of this website, you’ll love this movie.
