Quentin Tarantino is one of America’s most celebrated living filmmakers and his latest film – currently due out Christmas day – is highly anticipated. But even a critically acclaimed filmmaker can have a dud, even if some fans might disagree. Tarantino himself weighed in on what he considers his least accomplished work. ” Death Proof has got to be the worst movie I ever [made],” Tarantino told THR. “And for a left-handed movie, that wasn’t so bad, all right? So if that’s the worst I ever get, I’m good. But I do think one of those out-of-touch, old, limp, flaccid-dick movies costs you three good movies as far as your rating is concerned.” Death Proof was part of Grindhouse , a double feature along with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror . The duo didn’t exactly score at the box office either. It took in just over $25 million domestically on a budget that reportedly reached $67 million. Not all turned out dismal though, it did receive a 65 percent on Rotten Tomatoes among critics – not horrendous though certainly not gangbusters. Tarantino recently hinted to Playboy that his latest film Django Unchained may signal the sunset of his filmmaking career, saying that he wants to “stop at a certain point.” “Directors don’t get better as they get older. Usually the worst films in their filmography are those last four at the end. If you’re not familiar with Japanese director Noboru Iguchi, here’s all you need to know: his filmography includes the titles Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead (2011), Mutant Girls Squad (2010), and RoboGeisha (2008). Certifiably obsessed with farts and poop (his segment in The ABCs of Death , “F is for Fart”, is about a girl who dies in ecstasy smelling her female teacher’s farts) this low-budget genre master got his start in AV movies before making the transition to the mainstream (as mainstream as he’s ever gonna get, anyway) with Sukeban Boy (2006), starring topless model Asami as a boy who looks so much like a girl, his father sends him to an all-girls high school. All that T&A could have fooled us! Iguchi’s new movie is Dead Sushi (2012), a light-hearted and frequently hilarious horror-comedy about an inn under attack by killer mutant sushi. Yeah, like spicy tuna. Iguchi says he was inspired to make Dead Sushi by Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978) and Jaws (1975), which if you think about it–a Japanese guy combining killer fish and killer food– makes perfect and complete sense. The same can’t be said for the movie, but trust us– we mean that in the best way possible. Up and coming karate star Rina Takeda stars as Keiko, whose sushi chef father kicks her out of the house because women’s hands are too warm to really make good sushi. So Keiko gets a job at a remote inn, but when a drifter with a bad wig and a chip on his shoulder shows up and injects dinner with a radioactive serum, the metal guitar starts shredding and bloody martial arts mayhem ensues. Dead Sushi isn’t trying to be anything profound, but it must have been a ton of fun to make. It certainly is to watch. At one point a piece of sushi rips a guy’s throat out, and at another woman’s face is mangled by a piece of sushi; the guy watching doesn’t try to help her, but reaches out for one last grope at her boobs before she dies. Iguchi regular Asami shows up in a non-nude role as the mistress of the inn, fans of Japanese girls in their underwear will be more than satisfied, and there’s an absolutely gratuitous scene where AV star Marin goes topless as she prepares for a bath, blissfully unaware of the soon-to-be-dead pervert watching her from the tub. Silly, sexy and completely over-the-top, Dead Sushi (2012) is a movie that speaks to the perverted 12-year-old boy in all of us. Nowadays the Olympic Games ‘ opening ceremony is masterminded by a big time movie director. Beijing 2008 commenced with the vision of Zhang Yimou ( Ju Dou , Raise the Red Lantern , House of Flying Daggers ) and in London this year the reins — excuse me, the rings — have been handed to Danny Boyle , with a British history theme. But what if the Games themselves took inspiration from Boyle’s filmography — like, say Trainspotting , 28 Days Later , and 127 Hours ? According to the BBC , Boyle’s opener will be a reproduction of the British countryside representing British history with over 10,000 voulunteers and even more costumes and props. It will open with a reading of a passage from Shakespeare’s Tempest and will also include maypoles, a 23 ton bell and a moshpit. (Really!) Color me intrigued enough to actually watch primetime network television for the first time since I got Hulu+ on my iPad. It’s also got me wondering what would happen if the IOC just handed EVERYTHING over to Danny Boyle. Were that the case, perhaps he’d let elements from his filmography influence not just the pomp and circumstance, but the games themselves. Picture this: – Traditional Olympic fanfare is replaced with Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life” – Leonardo DiCaprio, hopped up on party drugs, is unleashed to wander through the “Beach Rave” segment of the Opening Ceremony – Rock climbing has very much been scratched as an Olympic event – To boost times in track events, all runners will be chased by rage virus-infected undead ghouls – The longjump to be made extra poignant by taking place in the cold vacuum of space to the music of John Murphy and Underworld – Living arrangements at the Olympic Village to involve a lot of mocking interviews by other roommates – Athletes will win their gold medals by exploiting a number of coincidentally corresponding life lessons.
