9 Milestones in the Evolution of Julianne Moore

In this weekend’s Crazy, Stupid, Love (read Movieline’s review here), Julianne Moore plays Steve Carell’s bored wife whose office affair (and subsequent request for divorce) catapults her husband into Ryan Gosling’s impeccably toned arms for a man makeover and life overhaul. How did the North Carolina native evolve from playing a pair of conniving, clichéd half sisters on As the World Turns to one of the most reliably brilliant actresses in Hollywood?

REVIEW: Crazy, Stupid, Love. Isn’t Nearly Crazy Enough, But At Least There’s Gosling

Crazy, Stupid, Love. is, for the most part, an effective love story, but the two figures in thrall to one another aren’t the ones you think: The magnetism between the movie’s two male stars, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling, is what really makes the movie tick. The women — and we’re talking about women like Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and coltish relative newcomer Annaleigh Tipton — almost function as accessories, although, as wonderful as these actresses are, that still isn’t necessarily a liability. Everyone in Crazy, Stupid, Love. is served well by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s crisp, intelligent direction. Their instincts keep the story moving deftly; if only, right at the finish line, the movie didn’t suffer from a giant failure of nerve.

Which of These Three Actors Makes the Most Believable Movie Blogger?

Today in news that doesn’t relate to Comic-Con: Deadline reports that Steve Carell, Jack Black and Nicolas Cage are in various stages of negotiations to star in Frank Or Francis for director and writer Charlie Kaufman. Details on the film are slim, but when it was first announced back in March , Frank Or Francis reportedly dealt with a filmmaker and the blogger “who takes delight in berating his cinematic talent.” (It sorta sounds like that movie Pitchfork that Jonah Hill was rumored for ; bloggers, they’re not just for blogs anymore!) Assuming Carell, Black and Cage sign on for Frank Or Francis — and assuming at least two of them are in talks for the lead roles — this news raises a fairly legitimate question: who among them is believable as a blogger?

James Spader: Coming to The Office!

The Office has found its man. Sort of. Having killed on the season seven finale as cocky branch manager candidate Robert California, Emmy winner James Spader has been announced as a new regular on that NBC sitcom. However, producer Paul Lieberstein says Spader will not have the job once held by Steve Carell’s Michael Scott. Instead, he’ll sky-rocket up to CEO of Dunder Mifflin’s parent company. Describing California as a “high-class weirdo Jedi warrior,” Lieberstein said in a statement that “he’ll have been hired over the summer as the new manager, but within hours, got himself promoted.” As a result, the task of replacing Scott in the office itself will fall to Dwight, Jim or Andy.
