Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson Top Grammy Performer Poll

Fans can’t wait for their Aretha Franklin tribute, with Lady Gaga and Eminem’s performances the next most anticipated. By Kyle Anderson Christina Aguilera Photo: Getty Images The 53rd annual Grammy Awards are almost here, and while the hardware tends to be the main event, the roster of performers is one of the most star-studded and high-profile in the show’s history. Eminem, Dr. Dre, Cee Lo Green, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Drake, Arcade Fire, Justin Bieber, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Katy Perry, Muse, B.o.B, Usher, Bob Dylan and Bruno Mars are among the heavy hitters who will be taking the stage Sunday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. But which performance is creating the most buzz among fans tuning in to watch the show? Earlier this week, the MTV Newsroom blog posed just such a question, and the results are now in. As soon as voting began, the competition became a war of attrition between supporters of Lady Gaga and hard-core devotees of Eminem. But once the producers announced that there would be a tribute to Aretha Franklin led by Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson , the competition suddenly morphed into a three-way dance. After hundreds of thousands of votes were cast, the Aretha Franklin tribute (also featuring Florence Welch, Martina McBride and Yolanda Adams) finished in first place with 45 percent of the total vote. It’s a pretty impressive finish, especially considering that the performance wasn’t announced until after voting began. Lady Gaga ended up in second place with 23 percent, with Eminem just behind her with 20 percent. Perhaps fueled by the buzz over the release of “Never Say Never,” Justin Bieber made a late run and managed to cobble together 9 percent. Katy Perry was the only other Grammy performer to pick up more than a single percentage point, and poor Miranda Lambert ended up bringing up the rear. All of Sunday night’s Grammy performances promise to be electric, but fans can barely contain themselves for Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga and Eminem. Justin Bieber Vs. Drake: Best New Artist Grammy Cheat Sheet

Florence and the Machine, Mumford & Sons and Esperanza Spalding are also in the running at Sunday’s show. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Every year, a new crop of up-and-comers duke it out for the Best New Artist prize at the Grammys . Before the big show kicks off Sunday night, get to know each of the nominees in the coveted category. Justin Bieber In 2010, Bieber presented at the Grammy Awards, and now he returns this year as a two-time nominee and performer . He released two albums last year; hit the road, selling out venues at every stop; and managed to not only become the teenage dream, but also find creditability in the world of hip-hop, thanks to collabos with MCs like Ludacris and Kanye West. Drake Drake quickly emerged in 2010 as the go-to MC for hip-hop heads and teenyboppers. He asked fans to Thank Me Later on his debut album, on which he rapped about girls, fame and himself. Drake showed that he had some street cred and a lot of heart on the album. Florence and the Machine Florence Welch emerged as rock newcomer of the year with her inescapable hit “Dog Days Are Over.” The flame-haired songstress belted out tunes that had fans worshipping at her musical temple, especially after her electric performance at the Video Music Awards . Her 2009 album, Lungs, proved to have some legs when “Dog Days Are Over” took Hollywood by storm and also top 40 stations. Mumford & Sons Their album Sigh No More (released in 2009) flew under the radar for some time, before their Grammy-nominated song “Little Lion Man” launched them into the mainstream last year. In addition to the Best New Artist nod, the tune is also up for Best Rock Song, thanks to the English group’s sparse, folky approach to making music. Esperanza Spalding Like Mumford & Sons, Spalding has been releasing music for years. In 2010, Prince announced she’d be one of the many artists hitting the road with him for a leg of the Welcome 2 America Tour. Now, she’s poised to reach even more audiences thanks to the Grammy nod. Who do you think will win Best New Artist on Sunday? Tell us in the comments! Don’t miss “Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys,” a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. ‘Glee’ To Cover Florence And The Machine’s ‘Dog Days Are Over’

‘We’re thrilled she’s finally broken through, and now we at ‘Glee’ get to be a part of it,’ music supervisor PJ Bloom tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/WireImage With “Glee” fanatics still raving about this week’s episode — particularly guest star Gwyneth Paltrow — it might be hard to look ahead to next week. But thanks to a run-in with “Glee” music supervisor PJ Bloom at Thursday night’s Hollywood Music in Media Awards — during which Bloom was nominated for his music supervision on “Eat Pray Love” — MTV News got a few tidbits about what to expect on next week’s episode with another superstar guest: Carol Burnett. “[Burnett] plays Sue [Sylvester]’s mom,” Bloom said. “It’s going to be fun. One of the best things we’ve been able to do with ‘Glee’ is the exploitation of the show tunes. We do our pop songs, we do our classic songs, but what we’ve been able to do with American musicals has been fantastic. And I think this is an under-explored area of pop culture. It’s stuff that the kids care about, clearly, because they’ve responded so incredibly to the musicals we’ve done. What we’ve been able to do for schools, musicals in schools have been great.” So does that mean next week’s ep will be chock-full of show tunes? “This next episode with Sue and Carol Burnett is going to explore quite a bit of that, which is fantastic,” he said. Another bit of information Bloom let slip was a certain pop song the cast will be performing on an upcoming episode, which came up during a discussion about whether Bloom had a hand in using Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over” in trailer for “Eat Pray Love.” He didn’t, but he did reveal that the titian-tressed VMA performer will make her mark on “Glee” very soon. “She is amazing,” Bloom said of frontwoman Florence Welch. “We’re thrilled she’s finally broken through, and now we at ‘Glee’ get to be a part of it. … We’re doing ‘Dog Days,’ ” Bloom revealed. “It’s going to be amazing. Florence is fantastic. I think it’s exciting that the United States gets to experience an artist like Florence and the Machine.” Are you excited that “Dog Days” will be on “Glee”? Florence And The Machine’s VMA Performance Will Be ‘Otherworldly’

‘We want viewers to watch it and say, ‘That was spectacular,’ ‘ awards-show exec producer says. By James Montgomery Florence Welch at her VMA rehearsal on Friday Photo: John Shearer/Wireimage.com LOS ANGELES — Florence and the Machine have performed at award shows in the past, but they’ve mostly been back at home in the U.K., and they’ve definitely never been as eye-catching, ambitious and downright exuberant as her upcoming performance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards . It’s a matter of necessity. After all, around the rest of the world, Florence Welch is a very big deal, a critical and commercial darling with an armload of hits and a devoted fanbase. But here in the U.S., she’s just starting to break through, thanks in no small part to “Dog Days Are Over,” a triumphant tune that’s recently become the soundtrack to many a TV show and commercial (most recently, it appeared in trailers for Julia Roberts’ “Eat Pray Love”). So her VMA performance is clearly a big deal, another (rather large) steppingstone on her way to Stateside success. And, somewhat accordingly, everyone involved with the show is aiming high. “People have heard the song on television, but maybe those people haven’t made the connection to Florence the artist, so that’s part of what her performance is going to be about,” Dave Sirulnick, VMA executive producer, told MTV News. “It’s going to be beautiful, breathtakingly done and otherworldly. And maybe it will help launch her here in the States. We want viewers to watch it and say, ‘That was spectacular.’ ” Judging from what we saw in rehearsals Friday (September 9), that may very well be the reaction. Part classic revue, part joyous sing-along, part kinetic, hippie-esque freakout, it’s a strangely perfect summation of Welch herself, not to mention a rather fitting tribute to her VMA-nominated “Dog Days” clip. There may not have been any explosions (or floral arrangements) — like Welch promised when we spoke to her Thursday — it hardly mattered. This is definitely going to be a big performance, one people are going to be talking about. And yes, they’ll probably be saying, “That was spectacular.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Florence And The Machine To Perform At Video Music Awards

Their ‘Dog Days Are Over’ clip is nominated for four VMAs at the September 12 show. By James Montgomery She surprised pretty much everybody when her video for “Dog Days Are Over” racked up four nominations at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and now, flame-haired siren Florence Welch (and, of course, the Machine too) have been tapped to perform the song on the big show, which airs September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. And yes, they’ll be aiming to surprise once again. Though, as Welch told MTV News last week, after learning of her noms, the celebs in the audience probably won’t be the only ones who can’t believe what they’re seeing. “I’m still kind of processing it, to be honest,” Welch said. “It’s such an iconic event, and it’s something I’ve watched on TV since I was a kid. It’s one of those things: It’s not real life, it’s a dream scenario. So for me to be actually a part of it feels like I’m in some sort of parallel universe. It’s kind of strange and wonderful and terrifying all at the same time.” And that’s a pretty good way to describe everything Florence and the Machine do (no wonder we picked them as “Artists to Watch” way back in January). From Welch’s flowing gowns and epic, downright ethereal voice to the harpist she employs and the fresh-cut flowers she insists on decorating her mic stand with before each show, she’s sure to raise more than a few eyebrows and probably win some new fans at the VMAs next month. And one of her fellow nominees can’t wait to see her play live: B.o.B, who told MTV News last week that that he’s a huge fan of Welch and is expecting big things from her on VMA night. “Oh, man, I dig Florence so much. I listened to her perform ‘Dog Days Are Over’ at Coachella, and she’s amazing,” he said. “I hope she performs, and I hope she wins everything. I think she’s awesome.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12.
