Pitbull Says ‘Give Me Everything’ Offers Summer ‘Escape’

Rapper says he ‘loves’ competing against Adele, LMFAO and others for Summer Jam crown. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Rob Markman Pitbull Photo: MTV News Earlier this week, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine declared the race for the 2011 Summer Jam crown all but over, calling his band’s “Moves Like Jagger” single not only the summer’s best song, but, really, the only song. While we suspect he was joking, Levine could probably learn a thing or two by glancing at the Billboard Hot 100 — which features plenty of other Summer Jam contenders, including LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” and, of course, Pitbull’s massive “Give Me Everything,” which topped the chart last week and is already his biggest single to date. Given the track’s success, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that Pit considers the Summer Jam sweepstakes to be far from over — in fact, thanks to assists from Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, he likes his chances of winning the whole thing. “You’ve got Ne-Yo, you’ve got Afrojack, you got Nayer, you got myself … when you put that in together, it becomes a paella — which is almost like a gumbo, different seafoods,” Pitbull told MTV News. “And with the records this summer, us competing against them, I love it, because that just goes to show how big ‘Give Me Everything’ is. “I mean, the Adele record is an amazing record — she was #1 here for numerous weeks, and we were #1 for so many weeks in the U.K. — it’s kind of like a tradeoff,” he continued. “You’ve got LMFAO with a great record also … guys that I have a lot of respect for, I’ve worked with them so many times and I congratulate them, I’m happy for those guys. So, when you see that battle for #1, with such great records, that means it’s a great summer.” Though he’d be thrilled if “Give Me Everything” ended up dominating the summer airwaves, Pitbull admits that, in a lot of ways, it’s not as important helping others escape from the worries of everyday life. Because, truly, that’s what any great Summer Jam should do. “People need to escape from everything that’s going on. And … if they’re going to spend the last $20 they made — and they only made $50 for the week — they want to spend having a good time, not running into drama,” he said. “So I’m more than blessed to be a part of this summer and the great music out there.” Do you think “Give Me Everything” is the 2011 Summer Jam? Jack Johnson Hopes To The Sea Will Be The Soundtrack To Your Life

‘Hopefully, people can take those songs and they mean something,’ he tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Jack Johnson Photo: MTV News To the Sea, Jack Johnson’s sixth studio album , hit stores Tuesday (June 1), and given the track record of his previous releases, there’s a pretty good chance it will debut at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. But if it does, Johnson probably won’t know about it — he’ll be about as far away from the music biz as humanly possible. “Generally, I’ve been out and about when the records come out … [but] we’re about to leave for two weeks on a little camping trip, [and] that works better for me, a little bit. Get away from it and not think about it too much,” Johnson laughed. “So we’re going to be camping for the next couple of weeks, and it’ll be good. [There’s] no real tradition. Whenever friends’ albums come out, I go out and buy them. But when it’s my own, I don’t want to jinx it.” There’s probably no real way Johnson can jinx Sea, which seems a pretty sure bet to top the charts, especially since it landed at #1 on the iTunes albums chart back in April based solely on the strength of pre-orders. Still, it’s not exactly shocking to learn that moving units isn’t his top priority. For a guy who has made a (very lucrative) career out of marching to the beat of a different drummer , Johnson sees Sea as just another step along that path — and a way to once again provide his fervent fanbase with the soundtrack to their lives. “I guess, with all the albums, I never used to think about it, but now there’s different songs that people will tell me, you know, ‘This song really means a lot to me after I lost a close friend,’ or, ‘This song is what we danced to at our wedding,’ ” he said. “And you start to realize — as I do with other people’s songs — you take ’em and they mean something, you have certain imagery that goes along with it. So I hope there’s songs on this — as I went through certain things in my life, whether they were heavy or just something fun, and wrote a song about it — hopefully, people can take those songs and they mean something and they can use it in their life.” Do you have a personal connection to any of Jack Johnson’s songs? B.o.B Has ‘Always’ Been A Fan Of Paramore’s Hayley Williams

‘People who go to my shows are the same people that go to Paramore shows,’ he says of ‘Airplanes’ collaborator. By Steven Roberts Hayley Williams Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Last week, B.o.B released the single “Airplanes,” featuring Paramore leading lady Hayley Williams. The Atlanta rapper followed that up with “Airplanes (Part II),” this time with Eminem joining Williams in the guest spot . Both tracks are from the MC’s debut album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, due April 27. When MTV News caught up with Williams recently, the Paramore singer sounded psyched to jump on the record . “I was given the track awhile ago while we were on tour,” she told MTV News. “The guys and I all loved it. They told me I was crazy if I passed it up. I liked the part too much anyways. So, of course, I was down.” Williams also revealed that she was a big fan of B.o.B, whom she called a “genius.” B.o.B was just as excited about the collaboration when MTV News met up with him before his packed show at SOB’s last week. “First off, Paramore is the sh–,” B.o.B said. “I’ve always been a Hayley fan, and to work with her, that’s another thing I didn’t think would happen to me as soon as it did.” Although the duo didn’t get in the studio together, B.o.B said he and the Paramore vocalist talked, and she really liked the song’s vibe. While the pairing might seem like an odd one, especially considering Williams has never done any rap features, B.o.B said he’d observed that his fans’ musical tastes are as eclectic as his are. “That’s something that I notice,” he said. “Like, if I do my shows and I go out to the crowd and talk to people, I’ll ask them what type of music they listen to. Everybody listens to everything. People who go to my shows are the same people that go to Paramore shows, are the same people that go to a Lupe [Fiasco] show or a Common show, because it’s all about the music, and it’s all about the energy put behind it.” B.o.B said he was fortunate not only to get to work with Williams, but also many of the artists on his album. More than securing a simple “yes,” schedules were often a key factor. “The timing of everything is real divine. It almost seems like it’s supposed to happen,” he said. “It’s kind of freaky sometimes how my first album — I have so many people on it. And these are people that inspire me tremendously, and just to have them on the album is amazing.” Were you surprised to hear Hayley on a B.o.B track? Who else would you like to hear the MC with?
