‘Devil Inside’ Advance Screenings Draw Passionate Reactions

Fans report being terrified, but some critics tweet about audiences booing at film’s conclusion. By Kevin Sullivan, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Bonnie Morgan in “The Devil Inside” Photo: Paramount “The Devil Inside,” the latest entry in the found-footage genre, screened Thursday night for special sneak-preview audiences and had the crowds screaming for two very different reasons. Some of the audience members, like Adam Geldres, found themselves shaken up after the screening; Geldres insisted that it was “one of the scariest movies [he’s] seen.” Ashlei Lien felt the same way. After the screening, she told MTV News and said, “I don’t even want to pray, because I’m scared because in the movie he prays …” but she couldn’t finish her thought. The film, which follows a young woman as she travels to Rome to meet with her possessed and dangerous mother, garnered passionate reactions across the board, but Twitter told a different story than the viewers we caught up with after the screening. Passion is not always positive. Soon after the advance screenings ended, critics, who were also in attendance, took to Twitter to share the reactions many of them witnessed. Many reported booing at separate screenings as soon as the film ended. Drew McWeeny from HitFix ( @DrewAtHitFix ) shared his experience from a regular midnight showing. “Wow. ‘The Devil Inside’ is a big ol’ burn. Active booing in the (sold-out) theater tonight.” El Mayimbe from Latino Review ( @elmayimbe ) said that audiences were even more hostile at one New York screening. “Audience at NYC screening were ready to kill the filmmakers if they were in attendance. So they took it out on poor ushers.” SPOILER ALERT The controversy stemmed from the film’s ending, which comes abruptly and, as many people claim, arbitrarily. A title on the screen then directs fans to a website to find out more. Taylor Kitsch Talks Prepping For ‘John Carter’

‘It’s such a grand movie, and John is in every shot of this film,’ actor says. By Kevin Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Kitsch in “John Carter” Photo: Disney Not just anyone can be John Carter . Taylor Kitsch found that out the hard way while auditioning for the role, his first blockbuster as the lead. And even though he had been unfamiliar with the John Carter books before, the role was, according to Kitsch, something he was “willing to do anything for.” In the upcoming adaption of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ beloved “A Princess of Mars,” Kitsch plays a Civil War veteran who finds himself transported to another planet. The Martians task Carter with saving the planet and rescuing the captive princess, played by Lynn Collins. The production finally came together recently after lingering in development for years and losing Jon Favreau, who was once attached to direct. The journey began by meeting with the director Andrew Stanton , best known for his work on Pixar films. “I knew of Stanton, of course, and I was a huge fan,” Kitsch says. “He was a big fan of Riggins, my ‘Friday Night Lights’ character, so right away we kind of pushed each other because we were so excited about just meeting one another.” After their initial meeting, Stanton took Kitsch through some of the preproduction work that the director and his team had already finished. “It’s literally floor-to-ceiling in prep and pictures, storyboards, arc of John Carter, arc of the Tharks, Dejah,” Kitsch said. “It’s not overwhelming, but it’s like, OK, this guy’s not screwing around.” That first meeting was just the beginning for Kitsch. The producers put him through “a lot,” but he understood that it all needed to happen. “It’s such a grand movie, and John is in every shot of this film, so of course it’s a big gap. You go on film, and you read for him a couple times and then you get to the screen test and you’re starting to battle through this,” Kitsch said. But Stanton was there for his eventual star every step of the way, especially during the two-day screen test. “This really says a lot about who he is. He takes you the day before and does a walkthrough,” Kitsch said. “He just puts everything level when you get there on the day. That just helped me settle in a lot.” Check out everything we’ve got on “John Carter.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . O Music Awards Shoot For ‘Longest Dance Party’ Bragging Rights

55-plus-hour dance-a-thon will take place in Los Angeles on Halloween and aims to raise awareness for LGBT youth issues. By Gil Kaufman Online Music Awards Photo: MTV There’s a reason the tagline for the O Music Awards is “offbeat, outrageous, online.” And for its second edition this year, MTV’s signature online awards show will once again attempt to make history, this time by hosting the longest dance party in history . The 55-plus-hour dance-a-thon will be live-streamed at OMusicAwards.com and should wrap up just before the main show kicks off at 11:30 p.m. ET on Halloween (October 31), hopefully with a new Guinness World Record in hand. The stunt is a sequel to the record set earlier this year at the inaugural O Music Awards, where Chiddy of Chiddy Bang went deep to set the Guinness World Record for the Longest Freestyle Rap. It was also revealed on Wednesday (October 5) that after taking over the Strip in Las Vegas last time, the show will roll into Los Angeles beginning October 29, when the dance record attempt will kick off at the Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip. The dance marathon won’t just be for bragging rights, either, as it will aim to raise awareness for LGBT youth issues, especially bullying, by giving fans a chance to donate to a number of organizations during the stream. Among the groups that will benefit from the record attempt are: GLSE (the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network), It Gets Better , the Gay Straight Alliance Network (GSA), Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). Viewers will also be able to use social media to support the cause and cheer on their favorite dancers. The current record for longest dance party was achieved in October 2006 by Unique Events Limited in Ireland and began with 40 dancers, with 31 still standing after 55 hours. The second edition of the show will feature new categories courtesy of user suggestions. Among the five new user-generated categories are “Oops! I Did It Online,” in which oversharing celebs such as Sinead O’Connor and T-Pain will face off against the Game and Courtney Love; and Best Artist With a Cameraphone, which pits Demi Lovato against Justin Bieber , Young the Giant, Katy Perry , the Deftones and Shiny Toy Guns. The other new categories include Best Web Born Artist (MNDR, Odd Future, the Weeknd), Best Vintage Viral Video (Metallica, Nirvana, Notorious B.I.G., O’Connor) and Best Lyrics Video (Perry, Joe Jonas, Lenny Kravitz, Christina Perri). The O Music Awards 2 will unfold on Halloween on OMusicAwards.com , as well as MTV.com , VH1.com , CMT.com , LogoTV.com and MTVHive.com . Fans can vote for their favorites and get updates at OMusicAwards.com. Related Artists Katy Perry T-Pain Young The Giant

George Clooney’s Directing Inspires Ryan Gosling

‘That was one of the reasons I wanted to work with George,’ Gosling says of watching Clooney direct himself in ‘Ides of March.’ By Kevin Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ryan Gosling Photo: MTV News The next step on Ryan Gosling’s climb to the top might take him behind the camera. In a recent interview with MTV News, Gosling talked about his aspirations to eventually direct, like his “Ides of March” co-star and director George Clooney. “I’d like to do that,” Gosling said. “That was one of the reasons I wanted to work with George, was to see how that’s done.” Even though Gosling may look up to Clooney as an actor/director, he isn’t ready to wear both hats simultaneously just yet. “I don’t think I could handle it as well as he does. He’s pretty incredible to watch,” Gosling said of Clooney directing himself in “Ides.” “He’s like Keanu Reeves in ‘The Matrix.’ Any problem that comes to him, he’s just dodging those bullets.” “The Ides of March” marks Clooney’s fourth feature film as director and his first time working with Gosling. While Gosling hasn’t directed yet, he does have some experience behind the scenes: He served as executive producer on last year’s critical darling “Blue Valentine.” Gosling recently found a new collaborator in Danish filmmaker and “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn. The duo are reuniting for Refn’s next film, “Only God Forgives,” and have two other films in development, including the much-delayed remake of “Logan’s Run.” Gosling’s work with Refn developing the tone and screenplay for “Drive” was often talked about in the press and could hint at future directing gigs.
