Samuel L. Jackson Explains How He Became An Usher At MLK’s Funeral

Here is the original post:

As the country marks the 50th anniversary of  Dr. Martin Luther King’ s assassination,  Samuel L. Jackson  has revealed that he served as an usher at the funeral for the civil rights leader in Atlanta. Jackson, 69, was a sophomore at Morehouse College in Atlanta when Dr. King was assassinated April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. Four days later, he participated in a march in Memphis to continue King’s work supporting a garbage workers’ strike. In a guest column for  The Hollywood Reporter , Jackson explains the turn of events that led to him serving as an usher at King’s April 9 funeral, how the tragedy propelled him into activism and why he staged a lock-in that got him expelled from college. Below, Jackson in his own words, via THR: When I first heard, I was actually in the liquor store buying a quart of beer, because it was campus movie night. The cashier said, “Dr. King got shot.” I said, “Is he dead?” And he said, “No, not yet.” I went to the movie — it was John Goldfarb, Please Come Home. That’s the only reason I remember that movie. In the middle of it, this guy came in and said that Dr. King was dead and we need to do something. Everybody left. I went back to my dorm and couldn’t find my roommate. Came to find out he was already in the streets with a whole bunch of other people, tearing up and burning up our neighborhood. Jackson soon jumped into campus politics, eventually joining a spring 1969 protest — in which he and others held Morehouse trustees hostage — that got him expelled for two years. On the 50th anniversary of the assassination, the 69-year-old star recalls those tumultuous, tragic days. A couple of days later, these guys told us  Bill Cosby  and  Robert Culp  wanted us to get on a plane with them and fly to Memphis to march with the garbage workers. There was a lot of anger on the plane. We didn’t know what to expect when we got to Memphis. We all thought it was probably going to be something physical, even though the National Guard was there. Culp and Cosby were trying to give us instructions on how to carry ourselves and enact King’s dream of being nonviolent. It was cool that they’d take us to Memphis and foot the bill for it. We weren’t thinking of it in any historical context, but we were glad there was something we could do other than burn, loot and destroy our own neighborhood. That we could do something that’s going to make these people’s lives better. Especially knowing that King was killed for something as simple as, in that moment, a garbagemen’s strike. We flew back that night and went to Sisters Chapel at Spelman College, where Dr. King was lying in state. The next day was the funeral. They needed volunteers to help people find their way around campus, and I became an usher. I remember  Mahalia Jackson  singing. I’d been listening to her all my life, so it was great to hear her sing “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” live. I remember seeing people like  Harry Belafonte  and  Sidney Poitier . People that I thought I’d never see, let alone have a relationship with later on in life. The funeral was pretty much a blur. Jackson soon jumped into campus politics, eventually joining a spring 1969 protest — in which he and others held Morehouse trustees hostage — that got him expelled for two years. Devonte Hart And His Siblings Removed From Public School The Day After Mother’s Child Abuse Conviction

See the article here:

O n March 26, Devonte Hart , his five siblings and his adoptive parents were allegedly in an SUV  that went off a cliff in Northern California. His adoptive parents  Jennifer and Sarah Hart , both 39, and three of the children,  Markis Hart , 19; Jeremiah Hart , 14; and Abigail Hart , 14, have all been reported dead.  Their three other adopted children are missing, 16-year-old Hannah Hart ,   12-year-old Sierra Hart and 15-year-old Devonte, who is known for a viral photo in which he is hugging a police officer in November 2014, are missing. The family lived in Woodland, Washington, near Portland, Oregon, and were reportedly on a road trip. Police originally said they had “no reason” to believe the crash was intentional. Now, according to KGW8 ,   Greg Baarts , acting assistant chief for California Highway Patrol’s northern division, said, “We do have reason to believe, however, that the crash was intentional.” CBS News  reported the Harts were abusive parents with neighbors claiming Devonte came to their house and said his parents were punishing them by withholding food. The neighbors also claimed in May 2017, “one of the girls rang their doorbell at 1:30 a.m. She ‘was at our door in a blanket saying we needed to protect her,’ Bruce DeKalb said. ‘She said that they were abusing her.’” All of the children were homeschooled but now there are more details coming out  about why they weren’t in public school. The Oregonian reports when the family lived in Minnesota, “Sarah Hart reached a probation agreement April 14, 2011, a week after she pleaded guilty to physically abusing one of her daughters, who was then 6 years old.” The next day, only a couple months before the school year ended, all of the children were immediately removed from public school. Therefore, it appears the reason why the children were homeschooled was because the parents were exposed as being abusive.  Even worse, in Oregon and Washington, the two states they lived after Minnesota, the Harts never filed the proper notices — the states “require families to tell officials that they’re homeschooling their children, with notice to their local school system.” Also, back in  2008 , “An Alexandria police report obtained Tuesday also shows a different daughter told authorities in 2008 one of her mothers bruised her with a belt.  Asked by police about the beating, Jennifer and Sarah Hart said the girl had fallen down the stairs days before, the report shows.” How were these adults able to keep adopted children after such a history of abuse? Clearly, CPS ignored obvious signs that may have saved the children’s lives.  Below is the famous photo of Devonte Hart. Our condolences go out to everyone affected by this tragedy. We hope Devonte and his siblings are found. I’m Kendall and April 28th, 2012 was literally the best…

I’m Kendall and April 28th, 2012 was literally the best day I have ever had in my life because I met my boyfriend Justin Drew Bieber. On the 27th, I heard Justin was going to the Tribecca Film Festival but it was during the day and I wasn’t allowed to go because I of course had 3 tests that day . It turns out that all my friends who went, met him and got kisses on the cheek from him in pictures and I started bawling my eyes out in school and at my lacrosse game and I was just depressed. That night I heard from a friend where he was staying and I called up my two other friends saying, “GUYS LETS GO TO THE CITY TOMORROW,” at like 12 o’clock at night and I didn’t even tell my mom until the morning.  We took the train in at around 9:30 and we were shaking and going crazy on the train. People were texting me saying I heard he left, I heard he’s here, I heard he’s there and blah blah blah, and so at this point I was like whatever I’m not going to get my hopes up, I doubt I’ll meet him. I got there around 10:45 am and there was no one there except for 2 girls and a mom and we weren’t sure if they were waiting for Justin or not so I asked and they were, which meant he was most likely still in the city so my hopes went up a little bit. As time went on a few more people came and of course beliebers become friends. There were not many people, it was only about 12 kids which wasn’t bad at all. They started to put these two barricades around us and at that point I was like OMG JUSTIN IS DEFINITELY HERE! I went up to the escalade we thought he was going into and we talked to the driver. He told us he was driving Justin, as soon as we walked away from the driver, he drives away to the back of the building. I sprinted as fast as I possibly could to the back just in case and he went into a garage in the hotel and the door closed. We were here for about 2 and a half hours already at this point and there was paparazzi around the front so we didn’t know where to wait, of course. I was about to cry not knowing what to do.  About an hour later, the garage doors open and the escalade comes out and the window rolls down what it seemed to be slow motion. At that moment I was just in complete shock, Justin was so beautiful he looked airbrushed he was so perfect. I sprint up to the car and was the first one there. I was like, “HI JUSTIN!” Everyone was FLIPPING out so Justin goes, “Don’t worry guys. I’m not going anywhere.” I start taking my picture and all of a sudden I realize I took a video and I’m like OH NO! So then I took another picture with him and it was just perfect. He grabbed out for my phone and held it with me while we took a picture and he smiled with his teeth in this picture, which I love when he does that.  After everyone got the picture I ran back up to the car and I was like Justin one more, he goes I’m sorry guys I gotta go,  and I was holding his hand in the car and then he starts rolling up the window and my hands were in the car. I screamed, “I LOVE YOU SO MUCH JUSTIN!” He said, “Love you too!”  and the window rolls up and he pulled out. Tears start POURING down my face and I ran around the perimeter of the hotel screaming, “I JUST MET JUSTIN BIEBER!” It honestly couldn’t have been more perfect, Justin was so sweet. I absolutely never expected this at all, I just went with the flow and it turned out for once I was lucky. I always sat here reading MBE’s and I would bawl my eyes out! Everyone who hasn’t met him yet, you all know the motto to NEVER SAY NEVER because it will happen and when it does, you will be the happiest person alive.  -@kendallrochlin See the original post: I’m Kendall and April 28th, 2012 was literally the best…
