According to Sun Sentinel: A Pembroke Pines police officer who responded to a jewelry store break-in is accused of stealing a pricey watch that burglars left behind, his agency said. Two surveillance cameras were recording when road patrol officer Kevin Burgs picked up a men’s $795 Movado watch from the floor of a Jared’s store, put it into the pocket of his shorts and failed to pay for it, a complaint affidavit states. Burgs, 36, who has a nine-year career with the agency, was on duty when he was arrested at police headquarters and taken to jail early Thursday. The Movado watch was retrieved from Burgs’ patrol car and placed into evidence, police said. “Public trust is vital to our partnership with the community,” Pembroke Pines Police said in a statement. “It is important to note that we held this officer accountable for his actions and charged him appropriately.” Burgs, freed from jail on a $1,000 bond Thursday, could not be reached for comment. Burgs’ lawyer, Tony J. Alfero, said he could not discuss his client’s arrest until he has more information about the allegation. Pembroke Pines Police promised transparency in the investigation of one of its own. “This one act is not representative of the rest of our police department,” the agency said. “We are extremely proud of our employees and thankful for their constant dedication and hard work.” SMH.
