‘Clash of the Titans’ director describes his hypothetical approach if hired to helm the superhero movie. By Josh Wigler Louis Leterrier Photo: MTV News Marvel Studios has recruited an impressive assortment of filmmakers such as Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh and Joe Johnston, but the studio has yet to announce a director for “The Avengers,” the big-budget superhero movie set to debut in the summer of 2012. On Monday (March 22), “Clash of the Titans” director Louis Leterrier told MTV News he is on Marvel’s short list of potential directors for the film , thanks in no small part to his previous work on “The Incredible Hulk.” While his attachment is far from official, Leterrier already has several ideas about how he would tackle “The Avengers” if hired. “It all starts with the ensemble, the cast,” the director told MTV News of his hypothetical approach. “It’s all about the cast. It’s all about the characters. You have to find the way to enter the movie through the cast.” If it’s all about the cast, then Leterrier is in luck. In addition to working with big-name directors, Marvel boasts a notable group of actors, including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Edward Norton as Hulk and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Chris Evans is the reported front-runner for the role of Captain America. “With ‘Avengers,’ it would be a little different, because a lot of the cast would have been cast by different directors from other movies,” Leterrier acknowledged, “but you can still bring everybody together. That’s what we did that was great on ‘Clash of the Titans.’ For the first three weeks, we brought everybody into a room and we workshopped the movie.” While Leterrier isn’t a lock for the “Avengers” job, he has at least one Hollywood insider in his corner: Sam Worthington, the leading man in Leterrier’s “Titans.” Worthington, no stranger to comic book fare having once been connected to “The First Avenger: Captain America,” told MTV that Leterrier would bring several worthy qualities to “The Avengers.” “There’s action. He throws a camera around like no one,” said Worthington, a self-described fanboy. “He does bring people together. He’s worked with Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins, William Hurt, Edward Norton — he’s worked with some big boys. Plus, he’s a fan. He’s like me! We watched some trailers the other day at ShoWest, and me and him were nudging each other because we’re fans. We make movies that we would want to go and see.” For breaking comic book movie news, columns and more — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
