C ognizant of the lack of support that many Black-owned businesses receive, truck driver Edward Dillard decided to make a concerted effort to support African American-owned restaurants during his coast to coast shifts on the road. However, when the Delaware native would travel through the outskirts of major cities, he found it hard to locate Black-owned restaurants. Determined to come up with a solution to this dilemma and give African American-owned establishments exposure, he launched a platform called Eat Black Owned ; a national directory of Black-owned restaurants. There is power that lies in the Black dollar. Black buying power is worth $1.2 trillion and that number is expected to grow to $2 trillion by the year 2020. However, the life span of a dollar within the Black community only lasts for six hours. After learning about these statistics, Dillard’s mission to support local Black-owned businesses became bigger than himself and he began laying the foundation for Eat Black Owned to empower other individuals to spend their dollars at Black restaurants. “The dollar does not circulate in the Black community long at all. I think our community needs to do more to lift ourselves up,” he told NewsOne. “I hope individuals will use this site and find a restaurant to patronize that they never knew about. We spend our money with other communities and rarely ever with our own. If there were more resources for us to locate Black-owned businesses, then I believe more people would support them.” After five months of research, he compiled a list of over 2,000 restaurants and launched the website in June. Through the site, users can locate Black-owned eateries that are near their geographic location. The site allows restaurant owners and customers to add listings and Dillard created a section for individuals to leave reviews. He specifically wanted to highlight places that were located outside of major cities. Dillard also wanted to ensure that his site was inclusive of different types of businesses. He includes mom-and-pop eateries and restaurants owned by Black celebrities. “I prefer mom-and-pop restaurants because I believe they put more TLC into their food and customer service,” he said. For Dillard, the positive feedback has been rewarding. As far as what’s on the horizon for Eat Black Owned, Dillard hopes to turn it into an app. He also plans on transforming the platform into a hub for content related to the Black culinary experience and will feature recipes posted by users. Platforms like Dillard’s are needed. Research shows that Black-owned restaurants grew by 49 percent between the years 2007 to 2012. Source: NBC / Getty The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is being reimagined once again thanks to a fan-made trailer that pays homage to Aunt Viv. Only this time, the beloved 90s show is put within the Jordan Peele horror context where the dark-skinned Aunt Viv and the light-skinned Aunt Viv become violent adversaries. The trailer was the brainchild of filmmaker Bobby Huntley and Colbie Fray after they met at Sundance Film Festival. “We left Sundance knowing we wanted to work together on something within the near future,” Huntley said, according to Shadow and Act. “A month or so later, I called her late one night and pitched her this idea and without hesitation, she came on board.” Along with Fray’s creative partner Olamma Opparah , the filmmakers fleshed out the idea for the fan-made trailer called Auntie . Then, they produced the movie with a crew made up of mostly Black women, including producers Cassondra “Cassie” Beasley, Kayla Daniels and cinematographer Mya Morton. The description for the plot reads: “ After a long, excruciating stint at a mental facility, Vivian Banks is released. Against strict orders from her psychiatrist, she makes her way back to Bel Air. Only to find her home and family has no recollection of her and every evidence of her existence has been erased. She must find out who was behind the hostile takeover before it is too late to reclaim her family and her home.” The trailer stars Theresa Lang, Letitia Jackson, Nic Starr and Charles Huggins. “Our goal isn’t to pit the two real-life actresses against each,” Huntley said. “They both did an amazing job bringing that character to life in their own unique way. We love every actor and actress affiliated with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Ai r. It’s just human nature to contrast and compare. For people to still debate over 25 years later is really a testament to their talents and longevity. We are just simply asking the question, ‘What If?’” You can check out the hilarious concept for yourself below.
Source: manoa / Getty Penn State Player Sent Racist Letter About His Locs A racist douchebag named David Petersen who graduated from Penn State in 1966 is currently being fire-roasted over 280-characters or less for an incredibly racist letter that he wrote to footballer Jonathan Sutherland that was tweeted out by his teammate Antonio Shelton. One of my teammates got this. Explain to me how this isn’t racist. pic.twitter.com/Qms1F6DEEP — Antonio Shelton (@_groovy55) October 7, 2019 A reporter at the Tribune-Democrat contacted Petersen who offered the weakest explanation of his cracker-y correspondence. Reached by phone on Tuesday, Petersen said making a racial or cultural statement “was not the intent at all. I would just like to see the coaches get the guys cleaned up and not looking like Florida State and Miami guys.” Penn State’s Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Sandy Barbour, released her own statement in support of Jonathan. I stand with our Penn State student athletes and appreciate how they represent PSU in competition, in the classroom and in the community. Their dress, tattoos, or hairstyle has no impact on my support, nor does their gender, skin color, sexuality or religion! #WeAre #ONETEAM — Sandy Barbour (@SandyB_PSUAD) October 8, 2019 To give further context about who the f**k David Petersen is, the Tribute-Democrat details the many alt-right-ish op-eds that he’s written in the past about topics like welfare, “violent offenders, and Islam. He asked: “Does the Tribune have no awareness of or regard for the families of those who died on 9/11? … The Tribune’s disclaimer as a paean to ‘diversity’ is invalid. This was an appalling display of poor judgment, an insult to all Americans, and dishonors all who have died and continue to die fighting the war on terrorism.” Safe to say that this a$$-clown is probably a MAGA, “blue lives matter”, Republican deplorable. After all the “disgusting” scandals that Penn State has had involving rape, sex abuse, and kidnapping this mayo-splattered bigot has the nerve to chastise Black hair. We hope he’s banned from Penn State for life.
Source: Gary Miller / Getty Someone has some serious explaining to do if they haven’t done so already. The University of Kansas is apologizing for a very sexually suggestive performance featuring Hip-Hop legend Snoop Dogg at its late-night event. This was definitely not a good idea. While Snoop Dogg performed his hits, stripper poles were wheeled out on Allen Fieldhouse floor, and fake money fell out of the sky on the heads of recruits. Snoop Dogg had pole dancers at his University of Kansas show, A FAMILY EVENT pic.twitter.com/1vNdzIMzpW — Too Lit Concerts (@TooLitConcerts) October 7, 2019 Oh, and we can’t forget the Snoop Dogg mascot with a giant fake blunt in his mouth as well. Such an outrageous photo. pic.twitter.com/xorqGGMF8h — Ryan (@RRinehart2012) October 5, 2019 Jeff Long, the Athletic Director at the University of Kansas, said on Friday night (Oct.4) that “we expected a clean version of the show.” Clearly, that was not the case at all, and somewhere down the line, there was a miscommunication because what they got was an R-rated experience fresh off the Up In Smoke Tour. Add this mess to the high-level NCAA infractions the University of Kansas is facing for sketchy recruiting tactics. Long took full responsibility for the risque show and added in a statement: “We made it clear to the entertainers’ managers that we expected a clean version of the show and took additional steps to communicate to our fans, including moving the artist to the final act of the evening, to ensure that no basketball activities would be missed if anyone did not want to stay for his show. I take full responsibility for not thoroughly vetting all the details of the performance and offer my personal apology to those who were offended.” He closed things out by saying: “We strive to create a family atmosphere at Kansas and fell short of that this evening.” The University of Kansas’ Late Night event is a traditional event and has taken place for 35 years. It traditionally started out as a scrimmage to celebrate the return of the college basketball season before turning into a full-on entertainment spectacle. Uncle Snoop has not been the only Hip-Hop act to perform either, 2 Chainz , Lil Yachty and Tech N9ne also have performed at the family-friendly event. This was just a whole ass mess, we expect there to be some repercussions for it. — Photo: Gary Miller / Getty
Last week, the Dancing With The Stars contestants were saved from a “normal” elimination after another contestant injury made that call. This week, the competition was back on, and some of the least polished performers made real improvements to stay in the game. Others did not, however, and one had to go home. In the mean time, Hannah unleashed the Beast on her exes. Sean Spicer and Lindsay Arnold showed real improvement with their Paso Doble. This dance’s rigid movements played to Spicey’s strengths (or at least, avoided his major weaknesses). It wasn’t a stunning performance, but they did win themselves a 5, 6, 5, 5. Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber went with a seriously challenging Jive. Ally did a good job, though she seemed to fall behind the dance’s rhythm and her dance partner more than once. The judges awarded the pair 8, 8, 8, 8. Kel Mitchell and Whitney Carson danced a Cha Cha, and there must have been something in the orange soda because Kel did well. He moved like a real dancer, and had a sort of presence that really impressed the audience. Judges were impressed, too, and gave this once non-contender 8, 8, 8, 8. Wow! Kate Flannery and Pasha Pashkov danced an Argentine Tango. Kate continues to absolutely floor audiences with her grace, confidence, and dance skills. This time, though, judges wanted to see a little more from her, doling out 7, 7, 6, 6. Sailor Brinkley-Cook and Val Chmerkovskiy did a Cha Cha, and viewers could notice Sailor mouthing along to the lyrics. Despite that distraction, she did a great job of fluid movements, to no one’s surprise. The judges gave her and Val a 7, 8, 8, 8. James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater did a Quick Step and, as usual, James hit it out of the park. He’s a talented dancer and a joy to watch on the stage. He’s also expecting his sixth child, he revealed. He and Emma were awarded 7, 7, 7, 7. Good, but not his best performance. Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko danced a Foxtrot. This was a gorgeous dance despite some very subtle flow issues on Lauren’s part. The judges didn’t seem to hold that against her, and awarded 8, 8, 8, 8. Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten did a Paso Doble, and it was perhaps the most fun dance to watch of the night. Not only was it well done, but the show also showed Hannah taking out her frustration on bottles in the Rage Room, referring to them as her “exes.” Though the dazzling light show risked distracting from the first-rate dance, the judges gave Hannah and Alan 8, 8, 8, 8. Nice job, Beast! Karamo Brown and Jenna Johnson danced a Tango. Karamo clearly has some dancing skills, but he seemed a little too stiff and formal. Tango is not ballroom dancing. He was awarded a 7, 7, 7, 7. Lamar Odom and Peta Murgatroyd James Van Der Beek’s talk about his new baby on the way (and past miscarriages) was definitely a highlight. And we’re sure that Hannah’s haters (they’re out there) will have a field day with her smashing some bottles. Whatever. We will say that Leah Remini was intense as a guest judge. Like, way too intense. She stanned hard for Lamar, and even got heated with her fellow judges who weren’t as impressed with him. Ultimately, Lamar’s luck ran out and he was eliminated . We also suspect that Leah will not be invited back as a guest judge any time soon. View Slideshow: Dancing With the Stars: Who Will Win Season 28?
