Disney Slammed Because Of Its ‘Eurocentric’ Version Of Princess Tiana

P rincess Tiana first made her appearance on film in 2009’s “The Princess and The Frog.” The animated character is back on screen for “Wreck It Ralph 2” and she looks distinctly different. Some have said Disney’s first Black princess looks white, which has caused backlash against the media giant. SEE ALSO: Texas Cop Shoots Unarmed Black Man For Entering His Own Truck C olor of Change slammed Disney in a petition  which read , “Princess Tiana looks nothing like her original character. She is shown here with Eurocentric features; a slimmer nose, loose curly hair and a significantly lighter skin tone than her previous depictions. This is unacceptable. Yet again, Disney made the choice to whitewash an image that represents us. They’ve totally removed and replaced Princess Tiana’s full lips, dark skin and kinky hair. By doing so, they are showing us that they don’t care about reflecting the diversity of the Black community. ” There was also tons of backlash on social media, see below: Princess Tiana is beautifully dark-skinned and she ain't Princess Tiana if she looks like somebody else. — Monecque Patterson (@momoflower34) September 20, 2018 Disney really tried to give us a light skinned, slim nosed Princess Tiana with 3A hair and all Black Twitter said was “I THINK THE FUCK NOT”. Now they’re reanimating her to bring her dark skin back and fixing her features. pic.twitter.com/GaSuKhgZzq — E-Money (@imanimlewis) September 21, 2018 I just got mad all over again that princess Tiana was a frog the whole damn movie — café con leche (@Cuff_this) September 22, 2018 And plus you ruled this as unimportant when it isn’t . White washing isn’t cool. There are a lot of black girls that look up to princess Tiana them changing here to look mixed was just wrong. Especially when black women/ girls have a lack of representative in the media. — (@dalu_xo) September 22, 2018 However, now Disney has announced they will redraw Princess Tiana. Color of Change reports, “The creation of Princess Tiana, Disney first Black princess marked a defining moment for how Black women and girls are presented in media, specifically in animated movies. After conversations with  Walt Disney Animation Studios , we’re glad they have committed to restoring Tiana to her original form for ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ to ensure authenticity.” See below: Although this might be a small win for some, it is hard to deny the power of representation for many Black and brown children. This is a perfect example of social media getting it right. Democrats Are Courting Young Black Voters After Taking Them For Granted In 2016

Excerpt from:

I t’s no secret that Black voter turnout was low during the 2016 presidential campaign. Part of the reason was Democrats taking the Black vote for granted, rarely hiring African-Americans at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and poor messaging. For the 2018 midterms, the Black vote was again expected to be key, as it helped power Doug Jones past Roy Moore during the Alabama U.S. Senate race. In addition, Andrew Gillum of Florida and  Stacey Abrams of Georgia secured their Democratic nominations for governor. Now, one Democrat was putting his money where his mouth is. SEE ALSO: Texas Cop Shoots Unarmed Black Man For Entering His Own Truck Billionaire Tom Steyer , most known for his calls to impeach 45, was donating $1 million to an initiative to increase turnout among Black youth, especially in the 2018 midterm elections, Axios.com reported . Black Lives Rising works directly with Color of Change PAC and Black Futures Lab. Arisha Hatch, director of Color of Change PAC, said they are avoiding “a transactional engagement with Black voters.” They will focus on Black non-voters and Black irregular voters — meaning voters who voted for President Barack Obama but haven’t felt compelled to vote in midterm elections. “For too long, Black youth have been denied a seat at the table, but with the rise of young black leaders … a new era of inclusive politics is emerging,” Steyer said in a statement. Clearly, Steyer knows the key to winning elections is the Black vote. Let’s see if other so-called progressive millionaires and billionaires follow his lead. Texas Cop Indicted For Shooting Unarmed Black Man

The rest is here:

A Dallas County Texas grand jury indicted a Mesquite police officer with felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for shooting an unarmed Black man he assumed was breaking into a truck but was actually trying to turn off the alarm of his own vehicle, NBC News Dallas reported. READ MORE: Texas Cop Shoots Unarmed Black Man For Entering His Own Truck Justin Moore , one of the attorneys for the victim Lyndo Jones , said his client wasn’t “too thrilled” with the indictment because District Attorney Faith Johnson should not have “punted to the grand jury.” “Her giving the grand jury the duty to issue the indictment shows that she does not have any fidelity to the people of Dallas County. She punted to citizens and, luckily enough, they ran that punt back and scored a touchdown today,” Moore said. They encountered Jones in a truck when they arrived, and Officer Derick Wiley shot him in a scuffle. They claimed Jones was trying to run away, so they charged him with misdemeanor evading arrest and had him transported to the hospital where they kept him handcuffed to his hospital bed. Jones’ attorneys dispute that story, arguing that Wiley shot Jones within 10 seconds of arriving at the scene and a second time in the back while their client was lying on the ground. After an internal investigation, officials suspended Wiley for violating police department policy. READ MORE: Unarmed Black Man Shot By Texas Cop Struggles To Pay Hospital Bills Attorney Lee Merritt , who also represents Jones, said his team had pressed Johnson for a month to file criminal charges against Wiley, adding that he’s “not positive that this office is capable of a zealous prosecution of a law enforcement officer.” Johnson dismissed Merritt’s concerns and stated that he didn’t have all the facts. If convicted, Wiley faces between five and 99 years in prison.
