North Carolina Republicans Admit To Suppressing The Black Vote

A hearing was held Tuesday about Republican voter fraud scheme in North Carolina that civil rights advocates said suppressed the Black vote. See Also: Election Day Reports Of Voter Suppression And Faulty Voting Machines Have Already Begun On Monday, a political operative working for Republican congressional candidate Mark Harris admitted to election officials that she illegally picked up and falsified absentee ballots as part of a scheme to help Harris steal the 2018 midterm election, CNN reported. Indeed, Republicans were accused of  using a variety of voter suppression tactics as  early voting got underway  in several states for the 2018 midterms. In the North Carolina contest, Harris was fighting off the Democratic wave in his district to keep a congressional seat that Republicans held for more than half a century. He had 905-vote lead over Democrat Dan McCready after the ballots were counted in the ninth district race, but the state board of elections declined to certify Harris as the winner because of absentee balloting irregularities. Election officials and witnesses said that the scheme may have involved more than 1,000 absentee ballots or request forms. Republican operatives were accused of forging signatures, completing ballots and mailing them from post offices near the voter’s home. Lisa Britt, a felon who had illegally cast her own ballot, admitted on the witness stand on Monday that she illegally collected between 35 and 40 absentee ballots in violation of state law. A consulting firm working for Harris paid her at least $150 per 50 absentee ballots she collected. Britt denied changing any votes, and the attorney representing Harris downplayed what effect the scheme had on the election results. However, civil rights advocates rejected that claim. “Attorney for Mark Harris, the candidate who benefited from this scheme, is now cross examining Lisa Britt. The attorney trying to suggest this is no big deal b/c the ballots that Britt took belonged to Republicans. This is FALSE. Black & Native American voters were most impacted,” tweeted Kristen Clarke , president and executive director of the National Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Precious Hall testified that she was a victim of the scheme. Precious Hall is a registered voter and a victim of the #NC09 scheme. Hall received an absentee ballot but did not remember requesting one. She normally votes in person. People showed up at her home, she completed ballot, people witnessed it, and they took the ballot with them. pic.twitter.com/ONBnm07jxe — Kristen Clarke (@KristenClarkeJD) February 18, 2019 Republicans—fearful of the impending Democratic blue wave—were  desperately using every trick in the book  to retain control of Congress and state governments. Suppression efforts targeting Black voters  were seen most notably in Georgia , where  Stacey Abrams  was trying to make history as the first African-American woman governor. The North Carolina hearing was expected to end on Wednesday. The outcome could lead to another election being held for the state’s 9th District House seat. With Brian Kemp Gone, Georgia Holds Runoff Elections Without Widespread Voter Suppression

T he voter suppression outcries heard during Stacey Abram ’s historic run to become the nation’s first Black woman governor all but disappeared in Georgia’s runoff election—now that Brian Kemp  is no longer in charge of the state’s voting process. Last month, Georgia Secretary of State Kemp oversaw his own race for governor, which was close but ended in defeat for Abrams. There was damning evidence that pointed to Kemp using a variety of voter suppression tactics to target Black voters. Kemp resigned under pressure on Nov. 8–after he had declared victory over Abrams. That was true on both sides, but it was greater for Democrats,” state Rep. Scott Holcomb  told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution . He also faced multiple lawsuits, including one from a group of voting rights organizations accusing him of using a racially-biased method to purge the names of about 700,000 voters from the rolls. Additionally, voters in predominantly African-American urban districts encountered lots of problems at the polls on Election Day—from faulty electronic machines that switched votes from Abrams to Kemp to excessively long lines because of missing power cords for voting machines. With Tuesday’s election results, Georgia Republicans retained control of all statewide offices. On Oct. 3, the sheriff’s department reported that an officer confronted Chinedu Okobi running in and out of traffic in the city of Millbrae. He allegedly assaulted a deputy who called for backup. What’s Next For Stacey Abrams And Andrew Gillum? Fallen Candidates Hint At Political Futures

A ndrew Gillum ‘s concession this weekend in the Florida gubernatorial election followed Stacey Abrams ‘ one day earlier in Georgia, leaving their political ambitions unfulfilled … for now, that is. While their midterm election losses by the narrowest of margins were a major letdown for their campaigns and supporters, both races also showed how perhaps with more support from the Democratic establishment and less voter suppression — a major factor in each election — they could, or, at least, should emerge victorious with another run. The question is, do they have any more campaign runs left in them? For Abrams, the answer was clear: A resounding yes. “I’m going to spend the next year as a private citizen, but I do indeed intend to run for office again,” Abrams told said during an interview on CNN Sunday morning. “I’m not sure for what, and I am not exactly certain when. No Business As Usual: 15 People Are Arrested Demanding Georgia “Count Every Vote” In Gubernatorial Race

Photo By Raymond Boyd/Getty Images A State Senator Is Amongst Those Arrested On Tuesday, 15 people were arrested during a protest at Georgia’s Capitol building in Atlanta, according to NBC News . The protesters were demanding that the uncounted ballots from last week’s gubernatorial race be tallied. Democrat Stacey Abrams is going against Republican  Brian Kemp for governor and the race is still too close to call. So far, Kemp holds a lead over Abrams of less than 58,000 votes as of Tuesday. Demonstrators on Tuesday were chanting to “count every vote,” according to law enforcement. Georgia State Patrol told NBC News that the demonstrators were arrested for unlawfully disrupting “orderly conduct of official business” at the state capital building. Amongst the people arrested on Tuesday was Sen. Nikema Williams , who was additionally charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice. State patrol said that the protestors were taken to the Fulton County Jail. Williams spoke about her arrest to The Washington Post . She said she was apprehended “because I refused to leave the floor of this building where I’m a state senator.” She went on to say that the protest was peaceful. Protestors have set up a bail fund site for anyone who wants to donate to the cause. The race between Abrams and Kemp comes a week after Election Day as Georgia officials continue to tally uncounted ballots in the race. Earlier Tuesday, a federal judge ordered Georgia to guard against the improper rejection of provisional ballots and to hold off until Friday to confirm the state’s election results. Abrams is hoping to narrow Kemp’s lead so that a mandatory recount or a runoff can happen. State law requires a candidate has more than 50 percent of the vote in order to win outright. Kemp currently has 50.3 percent of the overall vote. Meanwhile, Abrams has not conceded the race, despite pressure from Kemp who has already declared victory.
