No Chill: Protester Rushes Stage & Grabs Mic From Kamala Harris At San Franciso Forum [Video]

Source: Dimitrios Kambouris / Getty Protester Interrupts Kamala Harris At MoveOn’s Big Ideas Forum Presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris barely got a chance to answer a question this weekend before she was interrupted by a protestor. According to CBS News , the whole incident went down on Saturday at MoveOn’s Big Ideas Forum in San Francisco. Harris was onstage discussing one of her “big ideas,” which involves ending the gender pay gap. The moderator was just about to ask her a question when a man rushed the stage and took Harris’ mic from her hand. He said he wanted to bring “attention for a much bigger idea” before he was taken offstage. Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff , even intervened with the protester to send him on his way. Kamala eventually returned to the stage after chants of “Kamala back!” and she resumed answering questions. Peep the clip for yourself below.   The protestor was identified as Aidan Cook by the animal rights organization Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), who released a press statement shortly after the chaos. Many people were outraged by the incident, especially since the man took up time from a Black woman candidate in the middle of an equal pay discussion. “A white dude rushing the stage and grabbing the mic from a WOC, while she’s speaking about the gender pay gap, and then being escorted away without being charged with anything feels like a short play written to raise awareness about mansplaining and white male privilege,” wrote one @OhNoSheTwitnt . We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time.” ***Update*** Singleton’s family released a statement informing fans John Singleton will be taken off life support today. “It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off life support today. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of John’s doctors,” they said in a statement. Singleton “quietly struggled with hypertensions. More than 40% of African-American men and women have high blood pressure, which also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe.” ***Update*** According to FOX 4 , legendary director John Singleton has died. He was 51. However, TMZ has a conflicting report that Singleton is still alive and on life support. According to Michael Blackmon, reporter at BuzzFeedNews, Singleton’s publicist reached out to him to deny death reports. I just got an email from John Singleton's publicist about that one report saying he died early Monday morning. She said: “John is still in life support. That reporting is inaccurate.” — Michael Blackmon (@blackmon) April 29, 2019 FOX4KC.com claims that Singleton’s family informed FOX4 film critic Shawn Edwards, Monday morning, that Singleton has died. The Boys N Tha Hood director suffered a fatal stroke two weeks ago and was in a medically coma until reports surfaced that he has passed. Singleton’s family is divided over his estate, TMZ reports. Singleton’s mother Sheila Ward is the conservator over his estate, however his daughter Cleopatra filed a motion in an attempt to gain control over his estate. But the battle isn’t limited to both Singleton’s mother and daughter, his girlfriend is also trying to gain control over his estate. Conflicting reports about Singleton’s death circulated last week after his daughter reportedly claimed his health was improving in an attempt to gain control out of fear Ward will “fleece” the estate and isolate the children out of their father’s $35 million fortune. Singleton was the first Black director to be nominated for an Academy Award for his prolific film  Boyz n the Hood. Debate Rages Over Whether Black Women Support Bernie Sanders

Source: Pacific Press / Getty T he lingering question of how much support Bernie Sanders has from Black women voters was exacerbated last week during his appearance at the She the People Presidential Forum in Houston last week. That debate continued in a major way Sunday when one of Sanders’ top campaign staffers, a Black woman, defended the Vermont senator’s appeal to the coveted demographic. But that appeal was uncertain after Sanders, one of eight Democratic White House hopefuls at the event billed as “the first-ever Presidential candidate forum focused on women of color,” was asked about his plan to stem the rise of white nationalism. The Vermont senator’s familiar refrain that he once marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. elicited groans, jeers and boos, suggesting the audience wanted to hear new talking points instead of those from the 2016 election. Former Ohio Sen. Nina Turner , who is Sander’s campaign co-chair, appeared on the AM Joy show on MSNBC Sunday morning and cited statistics to show the senator was support from the vital voting bloc of Black women. . @ninaturner : The @MorningConsult poll shows very clearly that almost half of #BernieSanders ' supporters are of color. He's polling over 50% with women in general. So yes the senator does have a larger vision… #AMJoy pic.twitter.com/dBXMKWslDJ — AM Joy w/Joy Reid (@amjoyshow) April 28, 2019 But Joy Reid , host of the show, and Dr. Jason Johnson , another panelist, begged to differ and said Sanders squandered the perfect opportunity for him to bolster his support from Black women voters. They both said Sanders failed to answer the question and instead relied on tired talking points that don’t move the dial on the conversation about white nationalism in America. . @DrJasonJohnson on #ShethePeople : This was Sanders' audience to lose… He got the largest number of cheers when he walked on stage & blew it… He was asked about what he would do about white nationalism… He failed to answer the actual question he was addressed with. #AMJoy pic.twitter.com/z46dT0lfFK — AM Joy w/Joy Reid (@amjoyshow) April 28, 2019 Watch the full exchange below. Turner previously blasted the Black women in the audience who booed, saying at a rally the day after the event that the jeers were disrespectful. “In what world when you are sitting on the stage telling folks about your history, and you mention the fact that you were on the March on Washington with Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Fort Worth, in what world do people boo that?” she asked the crowd. “That happened to Senator Sanders yesterday, and I’m calling it out. In what world? You don’t boo folks for that. And I don’t care if it was somebody who I didn’t care about their policies, if they stood up with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other heroes and sheroes, we need to shout that out.” Bernie Adviser Nina Turner Blasts Audience From Black Women's Forum for Booing Senator's MLK Comments https://t.co/WAKJrDtx0V pic.twitter.com/x5GgU8Cql1 — Tormund XtopHodor, First of His Name (@tommyxtopher) April 25, 2019 That commentary prompted a response from LaTosha Brown , the co-founder of the elections advocacy group Black Votes Matter. She said that the last thing anyone should be doing was blaming Black women voters. I was disappointed at Bernie’s presentation at #SheThePeople but NOW I’m really getting pissed! Giving an uninspiring talk is one thing but blaming Black women for Sanders’ lack of preparedness, aloofness and poor performance is unacceptable. https://t.co/4yLWXroXAV — LaTosha Brown (@MsLaToshaBrown) April 27, 2019 That wasn’t the first time that Sanders has ducked questions about his plans for Black America should he be elected president. Back in February, Sanders was in the middle of a CNN town hall event when a Black woman in the audience asked him about his stance on reparations . But the 77-year-old, who has been a bit iffy (some might say he’s flip-flopped) on the topic, further blurred the lines when he ended his very noncommittal answer by stating, “It depends on what the word means,” he said. His multitude of past racial blunders — remember when he said that white people who didn’t vote for Stacey Abrams “are not necessarily racist” because they felt “uncomfortable” voting for a Black candidate? — have also been far from a good look for Sanders. Nevertheless, Sanders was still in second place in the most recent Democratic presidential nomination poll published by Real Clear Politics. No Business As Usual: 15 People Are Arrested Demanding Georgia “Count Every Vote” In Gubernatorial Race

Photo By Raymond Boyd/Getty Images A State Senator Is Amongst Those Arrested On Tuesday, 15 people were arrested during a protest at Georgia’s Capitol building in Atlanta, according to NBC News . The protesters were demanding that the uncounted ballots from last week’s gubernatorial race be tallied. Democrat Stacey Abrams is going against Republican  Brian Kemp for governor and the race is still too close to call. So far, Kemp holds a lead over Abrams of less than 58,000 votes as of Tuesday. Demonstrators on Tuesday were chanting to “count every vote,” according to law enforcement. Georgia State Patrol told NBC News that the demonstrators were arrested for unlawfully disrupting “orderly conduct of official business” at the state capital building. Amongst the people arrested on Tuesday was Sen. Nikema Williams , who was additionally charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice. State patrol said that the protestors were taken to the Fulton County Jail. Williams spoke about her arrest to The Washington Post . She said she was apprehended “because I refused to leave the floor of this building where I’m a state senator.” She went on to say that the protest was peaceful. Protestors have set up a bail fund site for anyone who wants to donate to the cause. The race between Abrams and Kemp comes a week after Election Day as Georgia officials continue to tally uncounted ballots in the race. Earlier Tuesday, a federal judge ordered Georgia to guard against the improper rejection of provisional ballots and to hold off until Friday to confirm the state’s election results. Abrams is hoping to narrow Kemp’s lead so that a mandatory recount or a runoff can happen. State law requires a candidate has more than 50 percent of the vote in order to win outright. Kemp currently has 50.3 percent of the overall vote. Meanwhile, Abrams has not conceded the race, despite pressure from Kemp who has already declared victory.

Problems With Broward County Ballots Could Bode Well For Gillum

Here is the original post:

T he problematic design of Broward County’s ballots could have given prominence to the Florida gubernatorial race in which Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum could become the state’s first Black governor. SEE ALSO: Andrew Gillum Fires Back At Wannabe Dictator Donald Trump Controversy over the design brewed as a machine recount of statewide ballots was ordered on Saturday, which prompted Gillum to withdraw his earlier concession of defeat to GOP rival Ron DeSantis on election night. “Let me say clearly, I am replacing my words of concession with an uncompromising and unapologetic call that we count every single vote. I say this recognizing my fate in this may or may not change,” he said at a news conference. DeSantis led Gillum by fewer than 34,000 votes or a margin of .409 percent, which triggered an automatic machine recount under Florida law because the difference was less than half a percentage point, USA Today reported. Mayor Andrew Gillum: “Let me say clearly, I am replacing my words of concession with an uncompromised, and unapologetic call that we count every single vote.” Can we get an amen? pic.twitter.com/fUaeadGbiO — Ricky Davila (@TheRickyDavila) November 11, 2018 Broward County, a Democratic stronghold in South Florida, is at the epicenter of the tightly contested governor race, as well as the U.S. Senate competition between Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson and Gov. Rick Scott . One puzzling issue surrounds the fact that about 26,000 more voters chose a gubernatorial candidate but not a Senate candidate. The ballot design could explain what happened, NBC News reported. The list of Senate candidates appeared buried at the bottom left column of the ballot, under the list of instructions. Candidates for governor, however, were placed at the top of the center column in a prominent position. There could be tens of thousands of uncounted votes in Broward County, where Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes   is under scrutiny by Republicans . Broward was also at the center of Florida’s botched 2000 presidential election. Meanwhile, DeSantis has declared himself the winner, even though the race is too close to call. His campaign released a video on Saturday restating its view that DeSantis, who had the full support of President Donald Trump , won the race. Gillum dismissed his opponent’s claim to victory given the uncounted votes. “What I do know is that every single Floridian who took time to go out to cast their vote, to participate in this process deserve the comfort of knowing that in a democratic society and in this process, every vote will be counted,” Gillum said. Claire Foy Reveals That Lakeith Stanfield Didn’t Want To Be Her Friend | Extra Butter

Read the rest here:

On this episode of Extra Butter with Xilla Valentine , I head out to Rome, Italy to sit down with my girl Claire Foy to check out her new movie The Girl In The Spider’s Web . In this film, she plays the role of Lisbeth Salander who has to steal a computer program that can access codes for nuclear weapons worldwide from Lakeith Stanfield who plays Alona Casales. When the stakes are this high the NSA is bound to be on the case, so they track the activity all the way to Stockholm. Things go off the wall when Russian thugs take Lisbeth’s laptop and kidnap a math whiz who can actually make the program work. This is when Lisbeth gets the help of and an unlikely ally to try to save the boy and recover the codes to avert disaster. One of the highlights of the film is the great acting by Lakeith and Claire, that director Fede Alveres explains their chemistry was beautiful to watch develop saying, “They are apart for a long time, but a big part of the story is Lakeith going after her and you can’t wait for him to get to her to see what’s going to happen because both of them are very capable at what they do. I think the audience never expects to see where it goes.” It was great to see these two develop magic. I asked Claire about Lakeith and she was very intrigued by the Atlanta star revealing he left her mesmerized, “I love Lakeith, I can listen to him talk for hours and the man is incredible young which I find terrifying. I love him, I think he so fascinating, he is an amazing actor. I think he is brilliant. We had a couple of nights where I just sat and went what do you think about this and what do you think about this? and Why? and What’s this? Yeah… I love him.” While her love for Lakeith was on one hunnid, his love for her might not have been on the same level. “I tried really hard to become his friend,” Claire explains that things didn’t go her way, adding. “Maybe I made him feel a little uncomfortable and he was like step back a little bit.” Maybe they’ll never be best friends forever, but they do a great job acting in scenes together. The Girl In The Spider’s Web is in theaters November 9th. Check out my interview with Claire Foy and you get to see me riding through the streets of Rome on a Vespa and roaming through the Colosseum then closing this episode out with one of the most beautiful backdrops ever.

The Wave Of Black Women Candidates Just Got Stronger With This Grassroots Funding Milestone

Read the original post:

B lack women candidates, who face disproportionately higher obstacles to fundraising, have gotten a much-needed financial boost to help push them across the finish line ahead of their opponents in the 2018 midterm elections. See Also: Blue Party: Say Hello To The Black Wave MoveOn.org, the progressive social justice and political organization, announced Thursday that it has raised more than $1 million in small donations from its members to help elect six Black women candidates in the 2018 cycle. They hit the milestone on Wednesday night, and the pot swelled to $1,101,791 by Thursday afternoon. The midterm elections are crucially important, and Black women bring an important voice to the political landscape, Karine Jean-Pierre , a MoveOn.org senior advisor and national spokesperson, told  NewsOne . “Demographics are changing. You can’t move forward unless you have Black women at the political table,” she emphasized. “It would be a farce to say we’re moving forward as a country if you don’t have Black women there.” . @MoveOn has been quietly banging away to raise grassroots funds for Black women running for office, & we're approaching an awesome milestone. Soon, our members will have directly contributed > $1 million to ppl like @staceyabrams @LindaForNC @LUnderwood630 @lucymcbath @IlhanMN — Anna Galland (@annagalland) October 15, 2018 Raising campaign funds is arguably the biggest obstacle that hinders the success of Black women candidates. There’s already an overall gender gap , in which women running for Congress raise an average of $500,000 less than men. The challenges are even greater for Black women compared to white women. A March 2018 report from Arena, a progressive group that trains and supports female candidates, underscored the challenges Black women candidates face in attracting funding. In 2016, Black and Latinx women incumbents raised only half as much as white women did and just two-thirds as much as white men. “Money is incredibly important. You can’t have a campaign without money,” Jean-Pierre emphasized. The money could help them reach more voters by purchasing TV or radio ads, printing brochures or hiring essential staff members. MoveOn members have been incredibly receptive to supporting Black women candidates, Jean-Pierre said. The organization has built an email list over the past two decades that numbers in the millions. Their small-dollar member donations have accumulated to critical funding that continues to fuel campaigns. Stacey Abrams , who is running to be Georgia’s first Black governor, received MoveOn’s endorsement in November 2017. The group endorsed 11 non-incumbent Black women for Congress, three statewide and 13 in local elections. By Thursday afternoon, MoveOn raised $939,548 for Abrams. The other candidates who received funding included Linda Coleman ($48,004), Lauren Underwood ($47,366), Lucy McBath ($47,943), Ilhan Omar ($18,522) and Jahana Hayes ($406.00). “It was the first time that we’ve endorsed so early in a gubernatorial elections because of the importance of her elections,” Jean-Pierre explained. “When we bundled for Stacey Abrams, I know it was helpful, especially going into the primaries.” SEE ALSO: Please Stop Giving Racist White Women Adorable Nicknames Where Is Kierra Coles?
