G eorgia’s Republican secretary of state, who’s competing against Stacey Abrams for governor, allegedly oversaw the removal of thousands of likely Abrams supporters from the state’s voting rolls. See Also: GOP Ramps Up Voter Suppression Efforts Ahead Of Upcoming Elections A group of voting rights organizations announced a lawsuit on Tuesday against Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp for using a racially-biased method that has purged about 700,000 voters ahead of the Nov. 6 midterm elections, WXIA-TV reported. The organizations reportedly include Jesse Jackson ’s Rainbow-PUSH Coalition, the Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Kemp has failed to notify the affected voters who will likely be turned away at the polls on Election Day, the suit alleged. “What has taken place here in Georgia is an insult to all of the efforts and accomplishments that we have done throughout this country,” Charles Steele , president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, said at a press conference Tuesday about the Black struggle to win voting rights. This comes as Abrams attempts to make history as the nation’s first elected Black female governor. Civil rights lawsuit filed against Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp | WJBF https://t.co/j7jGoqjV3D — The Voting News (@VotingNews) October 3, 2018 This case is part of a larger Republican voter suppression effort, according to activists. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 split decision, approved Ohio’s practice of removing registered voters from its rolls if they haven’t participated in recent elections. About a dozen other states controlled by Republicans wanted to adopt Ohio’s system following the court’s ruling. “Georgia has been more aggressive than Ohio in removing names,” Nse Ufot , executive director of New Georgia Project, told NewsOne , adding that the practice disproportionately affects people of color. Her organization “stands in solidarity” with the groups that filed the suit. Kemp is accused of using the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program to maintain Georgia’s list of eligible voters. The inaccurate system is seriously flawed , Ufot said. Meanwhile, Kemp has vehemently denied the voter suppression allegation, claiming in a statement that the lawsuit “has no merit” because Georgia hasn’t used the Crosscheck Program. However, many people did not know they had known each other since 1972. In a statement , Farrakhan wrote, “In 1972, when I was minister in New York City, Temple No 7, the police attacked our mosque. Within a few hours, Aretha Franklin came to the mosque, to my office, and said that she saw the news and came as quickly as she could to stand with us and offer us her support. She asked me if Rev. Jesse Jackson had been there to show support. I said, not yet. She said, he’ll be here within 48 hours. Rev Jackson came and stood with the Muslims.” He continued, “We marveled at her show of courage, fearlessness which was rooted in her profound love for her people and her desire for justice for us. Her activism, her selflessness caused her to stand with Dr. Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement as she joined the struggle of our people for liberty, equity and justice.” Clearly, Aretha Franklin had Louis Farrakhan, 85, there for a reason. Let’s hope the Queen of Soul’s wishes could be respected by all. Hip-Hop Heavies Packed PlayStation Theater Nov. 17 For Global Spin Awards; Swizz Beatz Honored For Selling 300 Million Records Swizz Beatz went from show host to award winner during a surprise tribute at the Global Spin Awards. The producer was in the middle of reading from the teleprompter during the awards – known as the Grammy awards for DJs – when out came his old label mates the Lox, as well as his mother, father, uncle and wife Alicia Keys. They presented him with three plaques to represent the 300 million records he’d sold in his career. “He had just surpassed the 300 million record mark, and we thought that was the perfect opportunity that he would be unaware of, that would be extremely heartfelt and extremely special,” show founder Shawn Prez told BOSSIP. Beatz apparently had no idea that he’d get the nod, and looked genuinely surprised, tearing up a little bit as he accepted the plaques. The special moment was one of many at the Global Spin Awards Nov. 17 at the PlayStation Theater in NYC. The Rev. Jesse Jackson Dr, 2Chainz, T-Pain, Timabaland and Jonathan Cheban watched DJ Envy win DJ of the Year, Mark Ronson cinch the Breaking Barriers Award and DJ Carisma win Female of the Year. Morrissey Claims Obama Hasn’t Helped His Own People The poor President is out here being called an oreo SMH. Via NY Daily News reports : Morrissey thinks President Obama is a white guy who has never come out. The sharp-tongued Smiths frontman said Obama is “white inside” and trashed the President’s handling of racial tensions in his first video interview in nearly a decade. Speaking Wednesday to Larry King on his Web series , Morrissey took easy bait to bash Obama’s record. “I think he’s disappointed lots of people because I don’t think in cases like Ferguson that he’s helped his own people,” the “Bigmouth Strikes Again” singer said. Pressed on what the President could have done, Morrissey casually suggested: “By being more interested, and forgetting about the police machinery all the time and constantly saying the police are always right and we must listen to the police. Everyone knows that’s not true. So Obama, is he white inside, that’s a very logical question, but I think he probably is.” Morrissey isn’t the first person to say stuff like this. The President has faced similar criticism from Jesse Jackson and Cornel West.
Is Mr. Rainbow Coalition really a “race hustler”? Governor Rick Scott Demands Apology From Jesse Jackson Over Comments That Florida Is A Racist State Via HuffingtonPost Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) demanded an apology from the Rev. Jesse Jackson on Wednesday, in response to Jackson’s recent comments likening Florida to the “Selma of our time” and an “apartheid state.” “Jesse Jackson owes every Floridian an apology for his reckless and divisive comments,” Scott said in a statement released Wednesday, according to the Miami Herald. “It is unfortunate that he would come to Florida to insult Floridians and divide our state at a time when we are striving for unity and healing.” Jackson’s comments came during a mock legislative session on Tuesday, meant to address questions in the wake of George Zimmerman’s acquittal of charges stemming from the 2012 killing of Florida teen Trayvon Martin. Flanked by members of the Dream Defenders protest group, Jackson urged Florida lawmakers to repeal the state’s controversial “stand your ground” law in a staged demonstration. “The manipulation of African-Americans [in Florida] is disgraceful … You incentivize killing people,” he declared. “‘Stand your ground’ laws must end.” He went on to assert that a boycott of the “apartheid state” of Florida would be in order if the U.S. Department of Justice failed to file a civil lawsuit against Zimmerman. “Incentivize”??? Really??? Jackson also compared Scott to former Alabama Gov. George Wallace (D), who attempted to obstruct desegregation by physically blocking two black students from entering the University of Alabama’s Foster Auditorium in 1963. “We’ve seen Southern governors before change their minds,” said Jackson, alluding to the apology that Wallace would later issue for his segregationist stances. “Wallace said we couldn’t go to the University of Alabama. He had to change his mind.” Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford (R) took to Twitter to assert that Jackson’s comparison of Scott and Wallace crossed the line. “I am embarrassed for him and his irresponsible statement,” he tweeted. Dream Defenders’ Steve Parjett told the Herald that he applauded Jackson for being “committed to continuing to help us and continuing to provide support.” Does Jesse owe Florida an apology? Is Gov. Scott being a little too sensitive?? Images via AP Continue reading →
