Voting matters and when politicians enact laws and policies solely to suppress the voting ability of Black and brown people it has real consequences that you will notice if you’re paying attention. Killer Mike recently spoke about how voter suppression efforts in Georgia had a negative impact on Black neighborhoods, and also in the election to get Stacey Abrams into the Governor’s mansion. Go vote. You’re too old to be aloof.
Source: Getty / Getty It’s not often that we laugh at the unhappiness of others—but let’s face it, anyone who’s sane is a little bit amused when Trump doesn’t get his way. He seems to feed off the misery of our nation , so any setback for no. 45 is ten steps forward for mankind. Most recently, Trump was accused of attempting to impede on CNN Journalist Jim Acosta ‘s first amendment rights. After going back and forth with Acosta, and quite frankly throwing a tantrum because Acosta was asking real questions, Trump had his White House press credentials revoked. “I think you should let me run the country, you run CNN, and if you did it well your ratings would be much better,” Trump told Acosta at the time . He followed up with, “CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them. You are a rude, terrible person. You shouldn’t be working for CNN,” Trump said. “You’re a very rude person. The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is horrible and the way you treat other people are horrible.” Oh, the comedy. But, guess what? A judge has officially ordered the White House to restore Jim Acosta’s press credentials, based on the journalist’s fifth amendment rights. Huffington Post states: “CNN’s victory was in response to a temporary restraining order asking for the immediate restoration of Acosta’s press pass. Its broader lawsuit concerns whether the White House’s decision to revoke his press pass was unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly, who was appointed by President Donald Trump last year, said CNN’s attorneys were likely to prevail in their argument that the White House had violated Acosta’s and the network’s First and Fifth Amendment rights. Kelly said he did not decide whether the White House violated the First Amendment, relying primarily on the Fifth Amendment in saying that Acosta’s and CNN’s right to due process was likely violated because the White House process for revoking his press pass was ‘shrouded in mystery.’” According to the site, Judge Kelly also cited “irreparable harm” to Acosta. Acosta will reportedly get his press pass back temporarily, “while the full lawsuit proceeds.” CNN said in a statement, “ We are gratified with this result and we look forward to a full resolution in the coming days. Our sincere thanks to all who have supported not just CNN, but a free, strong and independent American press.” While the White House still seems to be framing this as some sort of win , since the ruling was not based on first amendment rights, we bet Trump’s pissed he may have to spar with Acosta again…hit the flip to see how we imagined his face looking when he heard the news. Plus, a happy and victorious Acosta here . Hehe.

B lack candidates were instrumental in helping the Democrats win the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, enabling Democrats to end one-party rule and turn up the heat on President Donald Trump . But it was a mixed result, with disappointments in places like Florida where Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum lost in a close race for governor. At the same time, several Black candidates made history, like Ayanna Pressley who become Massachusetts’ first Black woman in Congress . Some of the elections were plagued with a number of instances of attempts to suppress the Black vote, including a concerted effort in Georgia ahead of Election Day that continued on Tuesday . Some of these women made history by winning competitive primary elections, as they overcame racism, gender bias and obstacles within the Democratic Party. Congratulations to Jahana Hayes, the former national teacher of the year who just became the first Black women ever elected to Congress in Connecticut. #ElectionNight #Midterms2018 #RepresentTheVote https://t.co/BFuTdEpje8 — NewsOne (@newsone) November 7, 2018 Racism was an effective GOP tool The Republican base responded to racist dog whistles in several elections. Ron DeSantis infamously warned Florida voters not to “ monkey this up ” by electing his rival Andrew Gillum, who is African American. Within days, Florida residents began to receive racist robocalls that mocked Gillum. Stacey Abrams was also targeted with racist robocalls in Georgia shortly after Trump called her unqualified to be governor of Georgia before holding a rally for her GOP rival Brian Kemp . “I heard people were making racist robocalls in my name against Stacey Abrams, who I am one hundred percent for, in Georgia,” Oprah said on Instagram. “I just want to say: Jesus don’t like ugly … And we know what to do about that: vote. Tomorrow show up and show out, and vote.” pic.twitter.com/CvK5VP60Az — Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) November 6, 2018 Triumph for anti-Trump activism “This was a remarkable wave of grassroots activism that swept across the country — with women and people of color leading the way. From a U.S. House of Representatives that reflects the will of the people to the passage of Amendment 4 in Florida, which restored voting rights to convicted felons, this election was an overwhelming rebuke of Trump and Trumpism, and a show of support for candidates who look like America and campaigned on a bold, forward-looking and inclusive vision,” said NAACP President Derrick Johnson . Vigilance needed to combat voter suppression Fighting against voter suppression is an ongoing struggle that requires tenacity. Georgia emerged as the epicenter for voting rights, where activists filed lawsuits against Kemp to ensure the votes of African Americans were counted. Kemp desperately used every trick in the book to win his election. “Voter suppression played a huge role in the silencing of the political voices of the Black community and all people of color,” the NAACP president said. “As we saw in Georgia and Tennessee, Republicans engaged in a massive voter suppression strategy that has included further rolling back the Voting Rights Act.” GA Secretary of State Brian Kemp stooped to new low in his ongoing efforts to keep black people from voting for @staceyabrams . Voting machines, which fall under his responsibility, were delivered to majority black precincts without any power cords. https://t.co/IxvD4Usoo5 — Jon Cooper (@joncoopertweets) November 6, 2018 Black folks will turn out for midterm elections Black voter turnout was high in 2008 and 2012 when President Barack Obama was running. C hris Rock and Keegan-Michael Key brought humor to the serious issue of voter suppression in a video that informs African-Americans about their rights. SEE ALSO: ‘I Approve This Message!’: Oprah Fires Up Georgia Voters For Stacey Abrams The comedians appeared together in a video clip released on Friday by NowThis and Color of Change days before the crucial midterm elections on Tuesday. Since the early voting season got underway , advocacy groups have been fighting against a growing list of alleged suppression efforts by Republicans—much of it targeting African-Americans. In the opening scene, Key says, “Hi. I’m Keegan-Michael Key, and I’m here to talk to you about the importance of…” Rock’s voice is heard in the background yelling, “Cut!” He pushes Key to cut to the chase because people already know his name. Key tries again, rambling on about “efforts underway across America” to prevent “certain groups from voting.” “What are the groups you’re talking about? New Kids on the Block? Spice Girls? ‘Groups?’” Rock asks. Key explains that he’s talking about Black people. “Well then say Black people!” Rock shouts. Look at the video embedded in this tweet. Suppression efforts targeting Black voters have already been seen in Georgia , where Stacey Abrams could make history as the first African-American woman governor. Voting rights advocates have been busy battling those efforts, including a lawsuit against Georgia election officials for the unusually high rate of absentee mail ballot rejections. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is one of the groups at the forefront of the battle. In addition to filing lawsuits and legal briefs on issues surrounding voting rights, the organization administers a hotline, 866-OUR-VOTE, year-round under the Election Protection coalition of advocacy groups. F or a second time, a federal judge put a halt to Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp ’s attempt to throw out absentee ballots over mismatched signatures. See Also: Georgia Isn’t Even Trying To Hide Its Racist Voter Suppression Efforts With This Video Federal Judge Leigh Martin May on Tuesday rejected Kemp’s request to suspend her initial Oct. 24 temporary order that instructed all local election officials to stop rejecting absentee ballots over the signatures, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Kemp is appealing May’s first ruling and wanted the judge to suspend her decision until a higher court hears the case. Kemp, the GOP nominee for Georgia governor, is in a tight race against Stacey Abrams , who could become the nation’s first African-American woman governor. He’s been criticized for his multiple attempts to suppress the Black vote for the 2018 election. Former President Jimmy Carter has asked Kemp to recuse him to ensure a fair election . BREAKING: A federal Judge in GA declined Sec of State Brian Kemp’s request to pause an injunction she ordered stemming from our absentee ballot litigation against Kemp and lawsuits filed by @CoalitionGoodGv + @ACLU https://t.co/YnwFu2w28g — Lawyers' Committee 866-OUR-VOTE (@LawyersComm) October 31, 2018 May’s initial Oct. 24 ruling stems from two lawsuits filed by voting rights organizations after advocates noticed that election officials in Gwinnett County, an Atlanta suburb, were rejecting hundreds of absentee ballots for signature discrepancies. The rejected ballots were disproportionately from minorities. In siding with the voting rights organizations, May ordered Kemp to instruct all election officials to stop tossing out the ballots over signature issues. She noted that there are many legitimate reasons that signatures on the ballots may not match the signature on government ID cards, including stress, age, or simply rushing to sign your name. Officials must mark those ballots provisional and give the voter the right to appeal the decision or confirm his or her identity. The secretary of state’s appeal of May’s order is expected to be heard in the United States Appeals Court’s Eleventh Circuit. Image via John Bazemore-Pool/Getty Images Georgia NAACP Says Voting Machines Are Incorrectly Registering Votes The great American wordsmith Tupac Shakur once warned us to “keep your eyes on your riches”, and never has such sage advice been more applicable than in the case of the valuable gubernatorial votes that have been cast early for Stacey Abrams. According to USAToday , the Georgia chapter of the NAACP has filed a complaint with the shady Secretary Of State, and Stacey Abrams opponent (no conflict of interest there…), Brian Kemp, stating that there are malfunctioning voting machines that are logging votes for Abrams as votes for Kemp. *side-eye* The complaint details failure of machines in both Bartow and Dodge counties to correctly register the votes that people have cast. “We’ve experienced this before,” said Phyllis Blake, president of the Georgia NAACP. “They ended up taking these old dilapidated machines out of service. The ones giving the problems. They should have been replaced about 10 years ago.” This suspicious situation is just another reason to distrust Brian Kemp amidst previous charges that the Secretary of State is suppressing the vote of over 53,000 people who are likely to vote for Stacey Abrams. “If warranted, our office will open a formal investigation on behalf of the State Election Board,” Candice Broce, a spokeswoman, said in an email. “We always encourage voters to reach out to our office if they experience any issues or witness any suspicious activity at the polls.” You have to see how important it is to vote. So many people believe that voting doesn’t matter and this story should serve as the most damning evidence to the contrary. If the votes don’t matter then why are people like Brian Kemp so concerned about turnout and why is he working so hard to keep people away from the polls? “Vote for @staceyabrams , that’s a win, win, win, win!” #TeamAbrams is fired up. There may now be bad blood between Taylor Swift and many Republicans, but the singer knew there would be trouble as soon as she posted to Instagram last week. Nevertheless, she came out of the non-political woods and sent a message to young voters who think that a change in the direction of the country can only happen in their wildest dreams. Yes, she received backlash. But Swift has clearly shaken it off and is now prepared to receive any more. This is all a long-winded way of saying that the artist shared two new photos on Instagram today, along with a very important caption affixed to each. “Something I wish I knew about when I was 18 and voting for the first time: EARLY VOTING,” Swift wrote along the images above and below. She added: “It makes it so quick and easy to go and cast your vote before November 6. Early voting starts TODAY in Tennessee and goes to Nov 1.” Taylor even included with these words a link to a Vote.org page that offers information on early voting across the country. Swift, of course, remained notoriously quiet about her political affiliations and preferences during the 2016 Presidential Election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. She came under an unusual amount of fire for this indecision as well. Apparently inspired to put an end to the misogyny/insanity/racism/total and complete chaos under the Donald Trump administration, however, Wfit stunned the world several days ago when she posted an endorsement of two Democrats in Tennessee on her social media page. This is what Swift wrote at the time: I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway In response to Taylor’s unexpected foray into the world of politics, thousands and thousands of people registered to vote . Despite endlessly promoting and bragging about Kanye West’s love of President Trump, however, Republicans for some reason decided to slam Swift for expressing her view. They dismissed her as an out-of-touch and ignorant musician who is rich and famous and who therefore cannot relate to the common voter in any way, shape or form. This is what Trump himself said about the pop star: Donald Trump on Taylor Swift: She’s a Moron and I Now Hate Her Music! But Swift appears to be undeterred. As she accepted the artist of the year trophy at the American Music Awards last week, Swift again reminded her fans to vote. “I just wanna say to the fans … you have been so nice to me and fun, and you’re so funny and you’re so cool and so loyal,” she said om stage, adding: “Every time that you have made me lucky enough to ever get to stand on a stage and have something really sparkly in my hands … it means something different. “This time, I just want you to know it means encouragement … for me to be better, work harder and to make you guys proud as much as I possibly can. “This award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people, and you know what else is voted on by the people is the midterm elections on Nov. 6. “Get out and vote. I love you guys!
