Judge Rejects Brian Kemp’s Georgia Absentee Ballot Suppression Attempt

Excerpt from:

F or a second time, a federal judge put a halt to Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp ’s attempt to throw out absentee ballots over mismatched signatures. See Also: Georgia Isn’t Even Trying To Hide Its Racist Voter Suppression Efforts With This Video Federal Judge Leigh Martin May on Tuesday rejected Kemp’s request to suspend her initial Oct. 24 temporary order that instructed all local election officials to stop rejecting absentee ballots over the signatures, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Kemp is appealing May’s first ruling and wanted the judge to suspend her decision until a higher court hears the case. Kemp, the GOP nominee for Georgia governor, is in a tight race against Stacey Abrams , who could become the nation’s first African-American woman governor. He’s been criticized for his multiple attempts to suppress the Black vote for the 2018 election. Former President Jimmy Carter has asked Kemp to recuse him to ensure a fair election . BREAKING: A federal Judge in GA declined Sec of State Brian Kemp’s request to pause an injunction she ordered stemming from our absentee ballot litigation against Kemp and lawsuits filed by @CoalitionGoodGv + @ACLU https://t.co/YnwFu2w28g — Lawyers' Committee 866-OUR-VOTE (@LawyersComm) October 31, 2018 May’s initial Oct. 24 ruling stems from two lawsuits filed by voting rights organizations after advocates noticed that election officials in Gwinnett County, an Atlanta suburb, were rejecting hundreds of absentee ballots for signature discrepancies. The rejected ballots were disproportionately from minorities. In siding with the voting rights organizations, May ordered Kemp to instruct all election officials to stop tossing out the ballots over signature issues. She noted that there are many legitimate reasons that signatures on the ballots may not match the signature on government ID cards, including stress, age, or simply rushing to sign your name. Officials must mark those ballots provisional and give the voter the right to appeal the decision or confirm his or her identity. The secretary of state’s appeal of May’s order is expected to be heard in the United States Appeals Court’s Eleventh Circuit. SMH: Investigation On Ohio Obama Supporter Who May Have Voted For The President 6 Times In 2012 Election

She sure looks like a nice lady and not one to be voting six times under other people’s names and such… Via Fox News: The Obama/Biden lawn sign remains proudly planted in front of Melowese Richardson’s Cincinnati home, three months after the presidential election. It seems that President Obama has an especially ardent supporter in the veteran Ohio poll worker. Richardson told a local television station this month that she voted twice for Obama last November. She cast an absentee ballot and then voted at the polls as well. “Yes, I voted twice,” Richardson told WCPO-TV. “I, after registering thousands of people, certainly wanted my vote to count, so I voted. I voted at the polls.” Authorities also are investigating if she voted in the names of four other people, too, for a total of six votes in the 2012 presidential election. “I’ll fight it for Mr. Obama and for Mr. Obama’s right to sit as president of the United States,” Richardson vowed when asked about the voter fraud investigation that is now under way. Richardson is one of 19 people suspected of illegal voting by the Hamilton County Board of Elections in the last election. Richardson’s granddaughter, India Richardson, confirmed to Fox News that her grandmother voted for her, by submitting an absentee ballot in her name. India told Fox News that she is not angry, and gave her permission to cast her absentee ballot. “It wasn’t a big deal,” she said. But election authorities say voting more than once, or in someone else’s name, is a big deal because it is illegal and threatens the credibility of the nation’s election system. As part of a new effort to root out any voter fraud, Secretary of State Husted has ordered all 88 of the state’s county Board of Elections to hold public hearings on any credible voter fraud allegations or claims of voter disenfranchisement during the 2012 election. He said any substantiated allegations should be turned over to prosecutors. “Once the election is over, and once the winner is declared, everybody forgets about it. I want to make sure that we don’t forget about it, that we make sure we do, essentially, an audit of that process to ensure that we know what happened, and then use that evidence to guide us going forward. … We need to learn from that last election so that we can be better before the next one gets here.” “Fraud does happen,” noted Husted. “Most attempts are caught by the system. But there are cases that do slip through, as this one does, and we need to make sure that we really send a strong message, that if you do this, you are going to be held accountable. It might mean fines, it might mean jail time.” Voter fraud, said Husted, “undermines public confidence in democracy, and that’s why we need, whether you are a Democrat or Republican, to root out all cases of voter fraud.” SMH. Thoughts???

Super Tuesday: Atlanta Power Couple Size Up Newt Gingrich

Georgia Tech student Thaddeus Johnson tells MTV News Republican nominee ‘has too much baggage’ to take on President Obama. By Becca Frucht Photo: Getty Images ATLANTA — After a slow morning at the polls , things are finally picking up as the Super Tuesday action kicks into gear in A-town. Yes, former Peach State Congressman Newt Gingrich is expected to easily take the state, possibly his only win today, but that doesn’t mean the other candidates aren’t getting attention from voters too. Or that everyone is totally onboard with the Newt message. The weather’s warmed up, the Georgia Tech student center is jumping and the polling place right smack in the middle of it is … still crickets. Every table in the Student Center food court is packed — and when I polled all the kids just steps away from the voting booths, most of them were either registered in their home counties, had already sent in their absentee ballots (props to these conscientious citizens!) or simply unaware that anything was going on. So MTV’s Powerof12 news team stepped outside to see what was going down in the quad and we ran into two cool coeds in spirited sweatshirts. Pals Thaddeus Johnson, 20, and Briana Brown, 22, agreed to a sun-dappled chat on what they’re thinking about this Super Tuesday, how their parent’s politics influenced them and why it’s important for young people to exercise their power to vote. They also threw in on what issues are most important, and we learned that the duo has the same social pressure point, interestingly. For Briana, the debate over contraception is what’s sparked her interest in the GOP race, “It applies a lot to us in this college setting, and it’s an interesting issue that I didn’t think of before the primary.” The issue has blown up into a national talking point thanks to the recent controversial comments from right-wing talk radio personality Rush Limbaugh denigrating law student Sandra Fluke. As far as Johnson is concerned, ” Newt Gingrich has too much baggage” to take on President Obama in the Presidential election, but he thinks whatever happens, it’s important for the youth vote to get out because “we’re the generation of tomorrow. We’re the next people that are gonna run the country. These older people, yeah, they’re gonna vote, but they’re about to die off.” Harsh? Maybe. True? Oh yeah. MTV has Super Tuesday covered, with reporters on the scene in Georgia, Ohio and Massachusetts! Check back for up-to-the-minute coverage on all the primaries, and stick with Power Of 12 throughout the presidential election season. Related Videos Super Tuesday: MTV News Is On The Ground!

Jay-Z Vows To Be Hands-On Dad, In GQ

Hov named King of the Year in mag’s upcoming ‘Men of the Year’ issue. By Rob Markman Jay-Z in the December issue of GQ Photo: Nathaniel Goldberg/GQ Jay-Z seems to excel at everything he tries. As a rapper, Jigga’s track record is impeccable and his accomplishments as a businessman have kept Hov hovering around the top of various Forbes lists for almost 10 years now. But how will Jay, who seems to do so many things so well fare at fatherhood? It’s a topic the mogul tackles in a cover story in GQ magazine’s “Men of the Year” issue. “Providing — that’s not love,” Jay says. ” Being there — that’s more important. I mean, we see that. We see that with all these rich socialites. They’re crying out for attention; they’re hurting for love. I’m not being judgmental — I’m just making an observation,” Jay, who was anointed the mag’s King of the Year, tells writer Alex Pappademas. “They’re crying out for the love that maybe they didn’t get at home, and they got everything, all the material things that they need and want. So we know that’s not the key.” The soon to be 42-year-old rapper graces the cover of the December issue, which hit newsstands on November 22, wearing a black suit, a matching skinny tie and sporting a grin. It’s a familiar look for Jigga, but the feature story reveals someone new: Big Poppa Jay. The Roc Nation boss’ complex relationship with his absentee dad factors into his own views on becoming a papi, and it’s a topic he tackled on his 2000 The Dynasty album (“Where Have You Been”), his ’03 “retirement” LP The Black Album (“December 4” and “Moment of Clarity”) and, most recently, on “New Day,” a standout track off of his and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne. On “New Day,” the duo rap hypothetically about fatherhood, except that now for Jay, life will imitate art. When the Throne wrote the song, Jay explains to GQ that he and wife Beyonc
