STEM Pioneer Dr. Gladys West Inducted Into Air Force Hall Of Fame

A Black woman who played an integral role in pushing space exploration and technology forward is finally receiving the credit that she deserves. Dr. Gladys West —the mathematician who helped create the Geographical Positioning System—was recently inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame, The Hill reported. She joined the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory and served as a mathematician during a time where new technological systems were being introduced. She also contributed to groundbreaking studies surrounding different planets. “She participated in a path-breaking, award-winning astronomical study that proved, during the early 1960s, the regularity of Pluto’s motion relative to Neptune,” read a statement released by the Air Force Space Command. “The Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Award pays tribute to the leaders of the early years of the Air Force space program, as well as the subsequent innovators whose vision and perseverance overcame the obstacles of the unknown, those who transformed the cutting edge of technology into operational systems, and those who dedicated their lives to exploring space in support of our national security concerns.” The stories of Black women who have made major contributions to STEM are coming to the forefront, and many of them are being honored for their achievements. Their legacies are inspiring the next generation of Black leaders who are interested in the field. Earlier this year 10-year-old Akosua Haynes , a young Black aspiring astronaut from Chicago, received a huge honor from the Library of Congress after penning a letter to the author of the book that inspired the film Hidden Figures ; detailing how the story motivated her. “I really want her to know how much her book inspired me and how it has really motivated me to push my math skills to a much higher level. I have a little STEM program on Saturdays and I’m trying to make myself more like Katherine Johnson every day,” she said. Once news spread about her accomplishments in the realm of sports, she became an athlete to watch. She was the first Little League player to grace a national cover of Sports Illustrated , she landed a spot on TIME ’s “25 Most Influential Teens of 2014 List,” and she secured a book deal. The world was watching to see what her next move in sports would be. Davis recently inked a letter-of-intent to play at Hampton. She was considering other schools that included Coppin State University, Southern University, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Pennsylvania, and Bethune-Cookman University, but thought that Hampton would be a good fit. Angela Nicholson —the head softball coach at Hampton—says she had no clue that Davis wanted to play softball in college until she received an email from her a few months ago. “She sent me an email, and I invited her to camp. She came to camp, and she was phenomenal. That’s how it all started,” she told the news outlet. “Having Mo’ne is great. I know she doesn’t want it to be about her, and neither do we. We want her to have a great experience and be like everybody else.” She will reportedly join the team as a middle infielder. Davis currently attends Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia where she plays softball, basketball, and soccer. SplashNews.com Raye Jean Montague Passes Away A brilliant woman lauded as the “Arkansas Hidden Figure” has passed. Raye Jean Montague of Pine Bluff, Arkansas died Tuesday at 83. She like Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson who were the “Hidden Figures” of NASA’s John Glenn launch , excelled in fields of STEM. Montague was an internationally-registered professional engineer and created the first computer-generated rough draft of a U.S. Naval ship. Montague appeared on “ Good Morning America” last year with Janelle Monae to discuss her accomplishments and told host Robin Roberts what it was like to excel despite living in the segregated south. “I’m known as the first person to design a ship using the computer,” said Montague. And I was the first female program manager of ships in the history of the Navy, which was the equivalent of being a CEO of a company.” Montague attended the Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal School now known as the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, an HBCU. She originally planned to attend the engineering school at the University of Arkansas but they did not accept black people at the time. In addition to being a trailblazing engineer, Montague was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the first sorority founded by African-American women. The sorority recognized her passing this week with a special message and sent condolences to her chapter, Beta Pi Omega in Little Rock, Arkansas. Merry Cheat’mas: Kevin Hart Admits He’ll Be Getting A Lump Of Coal For X-Mas Due To Spicy Side-Rib Scandal

(Photo by JB Lacroix/ WireImage) Kevin Hart Admits He’s Been Naughty After This Year’s Explosive Cheating Scandal Kevin Hart has a great attitude for someone who was probably in the spiciest cheating scandal this year . The comedian stopped to talk to EXTRA on the red carpet of his Jumanji movie premiere, where they had their adolescent co-host ask if he was naughty or nice this year. Kevin wasted no time being fake about his behavior. That’s definitely a tough question for  Kevin Hart  right now. It was a tough year for me. I had some bumps in the road but the good thing is you take steps backwards to take great steps forwards so now, I recovered from some not nice times, now what I basically want is just for Santa to know that I’m doing good and I’m doing better – I’m a good guy.” Ya’think?? After being caught TWICE with different women, a sex tape, some alleged extortion– all while your wife was pregnant, and on her BIRTHDAY. Welp, maybe next year Kevin with bring him a shiny red fight truck, if he can learn to keep his miniature man-meat in his pants. SMH.

Eff The Fashion World: Danielle Brooks Reveals Struggle To Dress Designer Due To Size

Janet Mayer / Splash News Danielle Brooks Says Fashion Designers Don’t Care To Style Her Despite Her Accolades We love Danielle Brooks curvy confidence , but the actress says it hasn’t been easy finding fashion to fit her since becoming a successful Hollywood star. In a recent interview with VOGUE , Brooks opened up about her struggle to stay stylish: “When I first started, I wanted to fit in. I wanted to be so inclusive with my style and it was really hard,” says Brooks who found many labels unwilling to collaborate with her during awards season in spite of her accomplishments. “I haven’t been given an opportunity to wear these big-name designers, it has never been an option whether I had a stylist or didn’t. A lot of people won’t design for me, no matter how many SAG awards, Tony nominations, Grammy wins; it doesn’t matter.” Wild right? It’s crazy that someone who has the money to AFFORD high end fashion, still can’t do so because designers don’t want to do custom fits for her… Brooks also pointed out that while Ashley Graham has become quite the rage, models of color haven’t gotten the same love: “I don’t know if fashion has made a wholehearted effort,” says Brooks. “It’s more like, ‘Oh this is a trend, let’s get on it.’ Then they bring in Ashley Graham, who is amazing, but isn’t the only plus-size model ever to exist. What about Marquita [Pring], Denise [Bidot], Philomena [Kwao], Tess Holliday? When I look at the ads I don’t see faces like mine, I see skinny white women.” We feel you girl… And for those designers who haven’t rolled out plus size offerings, Danielle says we should continue to press for change: “I think they’re trying, but they can go harder and we should not be easy on them,” she says. “I don’t think we should pat anybody on the back for [doing] something they should’ve done 30 years ago.” Brooks does have a line with Universal Standards and she’s also the face of Christian Siriano’s Lane Bryant designs. When speaking with Vogue she did applaud Christian Siriano, Chromat’s Becca McCharen, and Universal Standard’s Alexandra Waldman and Polina Veksler. She also talked about a big red carpet moment for herself: “I remember my first SAG Awards I wore this dark blue dress by Christian Siriano and a girl recreated that entire look for her prom,” says Brooks. “I thought, Yes! It matters. I want women in huge numbers to feel motivated and feel like they are beautiful, but even if it’s just one [person], then my job is done.” Danielle Brooks is definitely doing wonders for curvy girls, who else are some of your favorite outspoken plus size celebs?

Kailyn Lowry: Why Does She Get So Much Hate?

Fact: Kailyn Lowry, at this point in time, is probably the most controversial Teen Mom cast member of them all. It may sound a little strange when you consider some of the other scandals this amazing reality show has brought us – for instance, Kailyn has never been filmed while high on heroin. But it’s true. If there’s any doubt, all you have to do is glance at her social media accounts … you’ll see what we mean real fast. For example, last week, the Teen Mom 2 star tweeted that she was tired – understandable with a newborn! – but she wanted to try to stay awake so she could watch the latest episode of The Sinner, a new TV show. Someone actually commented: “You’re staying up for yourself …?” That’s the kind of reaching people are doing just to hate on her, and most of the comments she gets aren’t as innocent as that. She’s dealt with people making racist remarks about her children, she constantly gets criticized for her looks. (Which is silly because, let’s be real, she’s always been pretty.) Then, when we learned that she’d suffered a miscarriage while married to Javi Marroquin, her ex-husband and the father of her second child. That event would have been painful enough, even if he hadn’t blamed her for it, some particularly ruthless Teen Mom viewers felt the need to start vicious rumors about that, too. It’s got to be awful for her. Like, yeah, she did sign up for a reality show knowing full well that her private life would be filmed, edited, and presented as entertainment for the masses. But the things people say about her go beyond fair criticism — far, far beyond. … Why though? If you actually look at her story, Kailyn has been through so much, and to come out of everything as well as she has is pretty amazing. Her father abandoned her. Her mother was an alcoholic. She’s been open about the fact that she had to look out for herself from an extremely young age, because no one else was looking out for her. When she got pregnant as a teenager, she was forced to move into the home of Jo Rivera (her ex-boyfriend and the father of her first child) and his parents. Judging by early seasons of Teen Mom 2, this wasn’t exactly a picnic. After she broke up with Jo, she moved into an apartment with her son Isaac, working hard to support herself and that darling little boy. In fact, there’s a good chance she’s worked more than any of the other Teen Moms, from those early years to the present day. She continued working until the MTV money picked up and she was able to devote more of her time to her children and her education. Speaking of, how many ladies from the show have their Bachelor’s degrees? One. And her name is Kailyn. Of course she’s had her controversial moments, some of which she’s brought upon herself, but others which were undoubtedly blown out of proportion because cameras were rolling. In any case, it goes along with the whole reality show gig, and she’s always been quick to admit her faults. But to come after her kids, to ignore her accomplishments, or to blame her for things that are completely out of her control? It really just does not make sense.
