STEM Pioneer Dr. Gladys West Inducted Into Air Force Hall Of Fame

A Black woman who played an integral role in pushing space exploration and technology forward is finally receiving the credit that she deserves. Dr. Gladys West —the mathematician who helped create the Geographical Positioning System—was recently inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame, The Hill reported. She joined the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory and served as a mathematician during a time where new technological systems were being introduced. She also contributed to groundbreaking studies surrounding different planets. “She participated in a path-breaking, award-winning astronomical study that proved, during the early 1960s, the regularity of Pluto’s motion relative to Neptune,” read a statement released by the Air Force Space Command. “The Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Award pays tribute to the leaders of the early years of the Air Force space program, as well as the subsequent innovators whose vision and perseverance overcame the obstacles of the unknown, those who transformed the cutting edge of technology into operational systems, and those who dedicated their lives to exploring space in support of our national security concerns.” The stories of Black women who have made major contributions to STEM are coming to the forefront, and many of them are being honored for their achievements. Their legacies are inspiring the next generation of Black leaders who are interested in the field. Earlier this year 10-year-old Akosua Haynes , a young Black aspiring astronaut from Chicago, received a huge honor from the Library of Congress after penning a letter to the author of the book that inspired the film Hidden Figures ; detailing how the story motivated her. “I really want her to know how much her book inspired me and how it has really motivated me to push my math skills to a much higher level. I have a little STEM program on Saturdays and I’m trying to make myself more like Katherine Johnson every day,” she said. Once news spread about her accomplishments in the realm of sports, she became an athlete to watch. She was the first Little League player to grace a national cover of Sports Illustrated , she landed a spot on TIME ’s “25 Most Influential Teens of 2014 List,” and she secured a book deal. The world was watching to see what her next move in sports would be. Davis recently inked a letter-of-intent to play at Hampton. She was considering other schools that included Coppin State University, Southern University, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Pennsylvania, and Bethune-Cookman University, but thought that Hampton would be a good fit. Angela Nicholson —the head softball coach at Hampton—says she had no clue that Davis wanted to play softball in college until she received an email from her a few months ago. “She sent me an email, and I invited her to camp. She came to camp, and she was phenomenal. That’s how it all started,” she told the news outlet. “Having Mo’ne is great. I know she doesn’t want it to be about her, and neither do we. We want her to have a great experience and be like everybody else.” She will reportedly join the team as a middle infielder. Davis currently attends Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia where she plays softball, basketball, and soccer. The school was able to create the team through the help of a $225,000 grant that was issued by the USA Triathlon Foundation. The funds will go toward hiring a coach to lead the team, player scholarships, travel and other expenses. “Hampton University’s addition of a varsity women’s triathlon program is cause for celebration for many reasons,” Rocky Harris , CEO, USA Triathlon, said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “USA Triathlon is in the process of working with HBCUs on a variety of upcoming initiatives to increase diversity in triathlon at the youth and collegiate level, and this is an important step in that journey. The academic and athletic administration at Hampton have proven to be leaders by committing to this unique opportunity for female student-athletes, who will shape the future of our sport for years to come.” Leaders at Hampton believe that the addition of the team will be instrumental in creating pathways for Black women athletes to pursue careers in sports and will contribute to diversifying a sport where they are underrepresented. “Once again, just like in sailing and lacrosse, we are pioneering something in sports and specifically for women. This is not the first time that Hampton has led, and others will follow,” Hampton University president William R. Harvey told the Washington Post . Diversity in the sport is needed. According to a report released by Triathlon Business International , Black people make up 0.5% of triathlon athletes. Does Rihanna’s “Man Down” Video Display A Double Standard?

Go here to see the original:

Rihanna debuted her new video for “Man Down” early yesterday which received very mixed reviews. In the video, Rihanna shoots a man down in the center of a busy street. But the visual of a man being gunned down in broad daylight (with a clear view of blood exiting his neck and pooling around his head) proved to be too graphic for some of the viewers of BET’s target audience. So, let’s discuss both sides: I’ve spoken to some viewers that loved the video and their argument is that “because the most violent scenes in the video are in the beginning, it can be edited out without losing the raw and uncut story that is told in the song.” They also argued that although she is using violence and graphic images, she is also telling a story, which is becoming increasingly rare amongst artists in their music. Not only is Rihanna telling a story, but she is telling one that young women who’ve been sexually abused or hurt in any way by a man can suture with. Personally, after fully sitting down and watching the video I can agree with the Rihanna Navy on this one – the bad parts can definitely be edited out without losing the integrity of the video. Now, on the other hand, you have groups like the Parents Television Council that are against the video because they feel it is both inappropriate for BET viewers, as well as a double standard against men – which brings me to my next question. Does Rihanna’s video present a double standard? If Chris Brown made a video about a woman robbing him of his manhood and taking justice into his own hands and killing her, would it be okay? Think about it. After all the flack Chris Brown has taken in the past with his violent temper, would he be able to simply back up the integrity of his video by claiming “male empowerment”? Let’s just be real about it. They’d probably send the SWAT team to Brown’s doorstep before he could even make it home after shooting the video. Just face it, no one likes the idea of a man doing harm to a woman in any way regardless of the situation, so why do we make it okay for a woman to do so. UK Press Finds Possible ‘Muslim,’ ‘Islamic’ Plot to Kill Pope; AP Finds ‘Street Cleaners’

Check out the following headlines in the British press about the arrest of six men who may have been planning to kill the Pope during his visit to England: “Muslim Plot to Kill Pope” (Daily Express) “Pope visit: Five suspected Islamist terrorists arrested over assassination plot” (Telegraph) “Police question six street cleaners held over plot to attack the Pope” (Daily Mail) (2nd paragraph: “Armed officers detained the men, all believed to be Muslims of North African origin, as they prepared to go on shift at a cleaning depot in Central London.”) Yet in neither of two separate articles by the Associated Press ( Nicole Winfield and David Stringer/Victor L. Simpson ) do the writers mention a possible extremist Muslim/Islamic connection. The writers simply identified the suspects as “London street cleaners.” Why is the mention of at least a possible Muslim connection warranted? Because if these men are indeed Muslims who had a lethal plan, it would not mark the first time that Islamic extremists have sought to kill the Pope. Only by sheer luck did Philippine police thwart a terrorist plot to kill Pope John Paul II during a visit to Manila in 1995 . If Ramzi Yousef did not accidently set some explosives on fire in a Manila apartment, the deadly plan, which was less than a week away , likely would have gone forward undiscovered. In addition, the Daily Express reported that the “alleged plot is believed to be the second planned assassination on the Pope recently . In April, Moroccan students Mohamed Hlal, 26, and Ahmed Errahmouni, 22, were deported from Italy, strengthening fears that Al Qaeda were seeking recruits there.” (This also refutes Stringer’s and Simpson’s claim in their article that “there have been no known plots against Benedict in his five-year papacy.”) Like other media outlets, the AP has downplayed the seriousness of the plot. However, the Daily Express quoted a Vatican source , “Publicly the incident is being played down but privately the arrests verge towards the serious side and came as a result of intelligence work .” The two articles by the AP follow dreadful coverage by the AP’s Nicole Winfield earlier this week. In an error-ridden and slanted piece on Monday (9/13/10), she falsely claimed that Pope Benedict XVI had “broken his own rule” in his plans to beatify 19th century Anglican convert John Henry Newman. Clueless on Catholicism: NBC’s Today Says Pope ‘Inflexible’ About Women Ordination

It can’t be any clearer: The ordination of women in the Catholic Church is not going to happen. Ever. It . Will . Not . Happen . This is not a case of Pope Benedict XVI being “inflexible,” as NBC’s Today show erroneously claimed this morning (9/16/10) in reporting on the Holy Father’s high-profile trip to England. NBC needs to know that this is not a case of “waiting it out” until another Pope comes along and “changes policy.” The issue will never be “up for a vote.” In the Catholic Church, the ordination of priests occurs through Holy Orders, a sacrament. The Church maintains that sacraments were instituted by Christ himself. As Pope John Paul II reiterated in his 1994 letter Ordinatio Sacerdotalis , the Church simply does not have the authority to change the nature of something that Christ instituted. The authority in this matter can never be a Pope or anyone else; the authority is Christ, says the Church. Indeed, “this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church’s faithful,” as Pope John Paul II wrote. Take the sacrament of baptism. The very nature of the sacrament requires that the individual be baptized with water . The Church could not decide tomorrow to baptize with orange juice. Baptisms are done with water. In the same manner, Jesus chose only men to be his apostles, and the Church guards what it asserts to be a visible sign of God’s grace. The Church also asserts that the priesthood is about role , not power . In his Letter to the Romans ( Rom. 12:4-8 ) and his First Letter to the Corinthians ( 1 Cor 7 (all)), Paul teaches about roles in the Church. Although it may seem uncharitable and/or unkind to say, the protesters waving signs and screaming for the “ordination of women” (like those seen in England this week) are simply unknowledgeable of their faith. But I can’t imagine the Today show reporting that ! —— Dave Pierre is the author of the heralded new book, Double Standard: Abuse Scandals and the Attack on the Catholic Church .
