‘Love Is’ Recap: Nuri’s Doubt Jeopardizes Her Relationship With Yasir

Source: Jean Baptiste Lacroix / Getty Tonight’s episode of Love Is picks up with our lovebirds surrounded in doubt. Nuri isn’t so sure that she can trust Yasir, especially after he left her hanging. They’re not in a great place right now because Yasir hasn’t been in touch with Nuri since the piece of paper with her number on it is in his impounded car. Yasir also realizes that he still loves Ruby too. Her surgery situation brought him back closer and he realizes he has a hard decision to make—choose one and the other gets hurt, no matter what. It doesn’t help that Ruby’s parents think they’re still together (because she didn’t tell them the truth) and invited them to dinner in six weeks. via GIPHY Meanwhile, Nuri is pissed at Yasir, she also misses him and she can’t help but think the worst, which is that they’re not meant to be. So, she forces herself to move on. Work keeps her busy, especially because she’s doing well, and so does Keith, the work boo-thank that she was supposed to go skiing with. She forgot they were supposed to go skiing until he shows up to her place to remind her. He bought her some cute wintertime accessories too. Their fun gets interrupted when she’s called into work to brainstorm for a fan favorite character. Yasir shows up at her place just as her car is peeling off and she doesn’t seem him chasing her. It’s another missed connection. In another romantic, but also kind of sad twist, he goes to the junkyard and convinces them to let him get into his car so he can get some scripts and find Nuri’s number. But Yasir still doesn’t find the number because it fell on the ground, while he was rummaging, and blows away. Back to scouring the phone book for a woman whose last name he doesn’t know. The universe is working for them but in very different ways. via GIPHY Yasir goes home to check on Ruby again. He suggests going back home. Ruby doesn’t want him to go home because then she’ll be alone in LA and her parents will worry. Plus, she still has another 6 weeks to heal from her liposuction and needs help. They make peace at this moment. He agrees to stay and she says he can have the couch back. By this point, Ruby and Yasir know that there is no romantic future between the two of them but they’re still using each other It’s a symbiotic relationship. Meanwhile, Nuri’s co-worker friend, Angela, convinces her that Yasir is done and that she should move on. Nuri does a terrible job of convincing herself that Angela is right and decides to move on with Keith. via GIPHY Yasir tries his luck by stopping by Nuri’s house again and actually catches her home. This is his chance to answer her questions. He’s hopeful and even writes, “I love you” on her dusty car window. The truth is, Yasir Omar isn’t his birth name, he changed his name once he converted to Islam, he has a six-year-old son that he misses, he’s divorced, he and Ruby are done, but still friends, he’s not perfect and he is using Nuri. He’s using her to make him a better person. It’s really sweet when he says, “You’re my fresh start” and then Keith knocks on the door and ruins everything. Nuri is shaken by this because she still loves Yasir, but her lack of faith got the best of her. She tries to explain herself to Yasir but then he says, ‘You’re like the rest of them.” That’s man-speak for, “My feelings are hurt.” Anyway, Nuri says she’s going to fix it but Yasir is defeated. He opens the door, greets Keith in a civil manner, and keeps it stepping, but not before erasing the “I love you” on her car. Tamika Mallory Responds To Nation Of Islam Controversy: ‘Wherever My People Are Is Where I Must Be’

Editor’s note :  Activist Tamika Mallory has faced backlash in recent weeks for attending  Saviour’s Day,  an annual gathering held by the Nation of Islam in Chicago last month.  In an exclusive op-ed for NewsOne , the Women’s March co-chair addresses the criticism, her connection to the event and her commitment to building an “intersectional movement. Source: Dimitrios Kambouris / Getty I proudly serve as a leader for one of the largest women’s advocacy organizations in the world. For that reason, my recent presence at the Nation of Islam’s Saviour’s Day convocation troubled some of the very people who I have fought for and worked alongside for most of my life. I have heard the pain and concerns of my LGBTQAI siblings, my Jewish friends and Black women (including those who do and those who don’t check off either of those other boxes.) I affirm the validity of those feelings, and as I continue to grow and learn as both an activist and as a woman, I will continue to grapple with the complicated nature of working across ideological lines and the question of how to do so without causing harm to vulnerable people. I didn’t expect my presence at Saviour’s Day to lead anyone to question my beliefs, especially considering that I have been going to this event regularly for over 30 years. I first went with my parents when I was just a little girl, and would begin attending on my own after my son’s father was murdered nearly 17 years ago. In that most difficult period of my life, it was the women of the Nation of Islam who supported me and I have always held them close to my heart for that reason.   I am the same woman who helped to build an intersectional movement that fights for the rights of all people and stands against hatred and discrimination of all forms. I am the same person today that I was before Saviour’s Day, which begs the question – why are my beliefs being questioned now? I was raised in activism and believe that as historically oppressed people, Blacks, Jews, Muslims and all people must stand together to fight racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I believe that LGBTQAI people are not an abomination or a creation of man, but simply people, and that religion is not to be used as a tool to abuse, divide, harm, bully or intimidate. Where my people are is where I must also be. I go into difficult spaces. I attend meetings with police and legislators—the very folks so much of my protest has been directed towards. I’ve partnered and sat with countless groups, activists, religious leaders and institutions over the past 20 years. I’ve worked in prisons as well as with present and former gang members. It is impossible for me to agree with every statement or share every viewpoint of the many people who I have worked with or will work with in the future. As I do not wish to be held responsible for the words of others when my own history shows that I stand in opposition to them, I also do not think it is fair to question anyone who works with me, who supports my work and who is a member of this movement because of the ways that I may have fallen short here or in any other instance. My fellow Women’s March leaders believe that we can be the bridge to connect different groups in the name of our shared liberation. We don’t just step into difficult spaces, we create new ones. I am guided by the loving principles of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , though I have fallen short of them at times. And it is with the belief that “non-violence seeks to win friendship and understanding” and “non-violence seeks to defeat injustice, not people” that we organized a march on January 21, 2017, that 5 million people participated in worldwide; and we have been guided by those values the whole way through. It is my intention to walk the tradition of Dr . Dorothy Height , successor to Mary McLeod Bethune as President of the National Council of Negro Women. In 1995, she faced criticism for participating in the Million Man March, which was organized by the Nation of Islam. Financial support was withheld from her organization, and there were attempts to bully and intimidate her. Nevertheless, she stood strong and proudly addressed the massive crowd of Black people who gathered on the National Mall. Her first words? “I am here because you are here.” I also take cues from my mentor, Hazel N. Dukes , President of the New York State Conference of the NAACP, who has brought together Muslims, Blacks and Jewish people and clergy from all denominations. Her office and her home are open to gang members, teen mothers and formerly incarcerated people as well. Coalition work is not easy, and these women have operated from a place of authentic love for all people. My work requires an operational unity that is sometimes extremely painful and uncomfortable, even for me. But I push forward even when I am personally conflicted because our people are more important. – Tamika D. 22nd Anniversary Of Million Man March: ‘Separation Or Death’

More:

O ctober 16, 2017 marks the 22nd anniversary of the Million Man March . The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan will deliver a keynote address for the Commemoration and Day of Atonement called “Separation or Death!” the Final Call reports. RELATED:  EXCLUSIVE: Why The Million Man March Was Just As Much For Healing As It Was For Justice “ The Minister will deliver his message October 15 at Symphony Hall in Newark at 1020 Broad Street. Doors open at 12:00 noon ET and the program begins at 2:00 p.m ET,” the news outlet writes. Newark, New Jersey was chosen in part for its concentration of Black residents. Blacks make up 145,085, or 52 percent, of the total  population of 277,140, according to the U.S. Census Bureau . Student Minister Abdul Haqq Muhammad of Mosque No. 25 called Newark a “very Islamic city,” and said that Minister Farrakhan visits the city “quite often.” The first Million Man March found more than a million Black men and boys gathered on the mall of Washington, DC. Minister Farrakhan laid out an eight-step plan for atonement in the Black community, with men shouldering much of the responsibility for the socioeconomic ills faced by Black communities nationwide. According to the Nation of Islam , immediate outcomes of the march included 1.7 million new voter registrations, a surge in adoptions of Black children, and “skyrocketed” memberships in Black organizations such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Newark Minster Haqq Muhammad told Final Call reporters that this year’s message of separation is informed by “police brutality and a obstructions of justice within Black and Brown communities…We can see that the Caucasian in particular has become infuriated with Black people in general.” SOURCE: Final Call SEE ALSO: 6 Black-Owned Bed & Breakfasts That Feel Like Home Teen Developing App To Prevent Police Brutality     [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3205621″ overlay=”true”]

India’s Supreme Court Has Deemed The Islamic Practice Of Instant Divorce Unconstitutional

Getty Images “Instant Divorce” In India Voted Unconstitutional India’s Supreme Court has deemed the Islamic practice of instant divorce unconstitutional in a 3-2 majority verdict. The court called the practice “un-Islamic”. India is one of a handful of countries where a Muslim man can divorce his wife in minutes by saying the word talaq (divorce) three times. The tradition of “triple talaq” is still widely practiced in India, which allows a Muslim man to divorce his wife simply by chanting the word “talaq” three times. While “triple talaq” is centuries old, it is not enshrined in Sharia or the Koran. I welcome the Supreme Court judgement on instant Triple Talaq. Its a victory 4 brave Muslim women who hve waged battle against it for years — Azmi Shabana (@AzmiShabana) August 22, 2017 The landmark court decision came in response to petitions challenging the so-called “triple talaq” custom. The cases were filed by five Muslim women who had been divorced in this way and two rights groups. Three of the five Supreme Court judges called the controversial practice “un-Islamic, arbitrary and unconstitutional”. One of the judges, Justice Kurien Joseph, said the practice was not an essential part of Islam and enjoyed no protection. Women’s rights campaigners have hailed this as a historic win.

Jeff Sessions Selected to Be U.S. Attorney General

It looks like Jeff Sessions will be our next U.S. Attorney General. The senator from Alabama has been nominated to this vital position by President-Elect Donald Trump, who has once again stirred up quite a bit of controversy before getting into the Oval Office. Sessions is a 69-year old staunch Conservative who often campaigned alongside Trump. He has been an outspoken supporter of the former Celebrity Apprentice star for months. But that is not the controversial part, unless you think scandal ought to follow around anyone who advocated Donald Trump for President. Sessions formerly worked as a prosecutor and was elected into the Senate in 1996. He currently serves on the Judiciary Committee and is best known for his strong opposition to immigration reform, along with his objection to bipartisan proposals to cut mandatory minimum prison sentences. He has supporter Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the Mexican border and he is all about deporting illegal aliens from America. According to The New York Times, Sessions was nominated in 1986 by the late president Ronald Reagan for a federal judgeship. However, this nomination was rejected due to a series of racially charged comments the politician had made in the past. At the time, Sessions’ nomination was only one of two to be rejected by the panel in almost five decades. What sort of divisive remarks has Sessions been accused of uttering? He had earlier branded civil rights organizations such as the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference as “un-American” and “Communist-inspired.” He also once said that the Ku Klux Klan was fine by him, although he lost some respect for its members when he learned they smoked pot. (Sessions does not deny making this comment, but says it was made in jest.) Then there’s the case of Thomas H. Hughes. An African American prosecutor, he alleges that Sessions referred to him as “boy.” “Jeff has been a highly respected member of the U.S. Senate for 20 years,” Trump said in a statement. “He is a world-class legal mind and considered a truly great Attorney General and US Attorney in the state of Alabama. Jeff is greatly admired by legal scholars and virtually everyone who knows him.” Millions of people around the globe are growing more and more concerned by the kinds of people Trump is assigning to key White House positions. He previously announced that Steve Bannon would serve as a chief advisor and… well… you can learn more about Steve Bannon here: View Slideshow: Steve Bannon: Who is Trump’s White Nationalist Chief Advisor? Sessions was one of President Barack Obama’s loudest opponents, voting against his nominees to the Supreme Court from his post on the Judiciary Committee and opposing Obama’s other major domestic initiatives. He also seems to be in favor of Trump’s ban on Muslims. “He simply said, and the way I understand it is, that we should slow down. Let’s have a pause and begin to analyze where the threats are coming from,” Sessions told CNN in June, amidst questions about whether or not Trump’s position was shifting. “We have a toxic ideology, hopefully very small within Islam; certainly most people, most Muslims don’t agree with this violent, jihadist approach. “And we need to figure out a better way to identify that.” What do you think of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General? Curt Schilling Threatens Run for President

Curt Schilling was a borderline Hall of Fame pitcher during his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox. Now, the controversial ex-hurler thinks he’d be a top notch President of the United States. Having become more known for his xenophobia, sexism and all-around bigotry ever since retiring from Major League Baseball, Schilling issued quite a threat o Facebook this past Sunday: He has his sights set on the Oval Office. In a post that is tragically gaining momentum online, Schilling wrote that his plan is to win state office first and then be in the White House in eight years  - “or 4 if by some amazing illegal event this country elects another clinton.” (It’s unclear what “illegal” event is being referred to here. A democratic, nationwide vote that is not controlled by the federal government?) Might Schilling be joking around? We guess. But he isn’t exactly known for having a sense of humor… and we all thought Donald Trump was joking around back in the day, didn’t we? In April, Schilling was fired from ESPN after posing a meme about transgender individuals in response to flak North Carolina has received over its “bathroom law.” This is the law that requires people to only use the bathroom that corresponds to their birth gender. “A man is a man no matter what they call themselves,” Schilling wrote at the time, along with the following picture. “I don’t care what they are, who they sleep with, men’s room was designed for the penis, women’s not so much. Now you need laws telling us differently? Pathetic.” Schilling did not take his firing quietly, however. He proceeded to go on multiple rants in which he accused various ESPN employees of racism and said the network discriminates against Republicans. About a year ago, meanwhile, Schilling was suspended by ESPN for comparing radical members of Islam to Nazis . And if you think his views have calmed down in any way of late, consider a couple recent memes he shared on Facebook. First, Schilling said he “loves” this one: Then, he blamed the “war on cops” on President Obama via this image: We’d love to make a few quips here about Curt Schilling as a Presidential candidate. But the existence of Donald Trump has made that impossible. There’s nothing funny about bigots thinking they should be the most powerful person on the planet. There’s even less funny about the millions of people that agree with them. Schilling should go back to pretending he had blood on his sock during Game Six of the 2004 American League Championship Series. View Slideshow: 19 Scandalous Sports Stories
