This Is America: Alabama Newspaper Editor Calls For KKK To Lynch Politicians In Washington D.C.

Source: Eric-Paul-Pierre PASQUIER / Getty He Says Democrats “Plotting To Raise Taxes” Need To Be Cleared Out One vile newspaper editor is unapologetic about wanting to bring lynchings to Washington, D.C. According to the Montgomery Advertiser , Goodloe Sutton is the publisher of the Democrat-Reporter in the small town of Linden, Alabama, and he wants the Ku Klux Klan to return to full power. He published an editorial in the Democrat-Reporter calling for “the Ku Klux Klan to night ride again” against “Democrats in the Republican Party and Democrats [who] are plotting to raise taxes in Alabama.” Sutton confirmed his words to the Montgomery Advertiser on Monday, saying “If we could get the Klan to go up there and clean out D.C., we’d all been better off.” He didn’t stop there either. When asked to elaborate, Sutton suggested lynching. “We’ll get the hemp ropes out, loop them over a tall limb and hang all of them,” Sutton said. When asked if he felt it was wrong for the publisher of a newspaper to promote lynching Americans, Sutton continued: “… It’s not calling for the lynchings of Americans. These are socialist-communists we’re talking about. Do you know what socialism and communism is?” Sutton wrote in the newspaper editorial: “Democrats in the Republican Party and Democrats are plotting to raise taxes in Alabama. They do not understand how to eliminate expenses when money is needed in other areas. This socialist-communist ideology sounds good to the ignorant, the uneducated, and the simple-minded people.” When asked if he understood the KKK is a racist and violent group, Sutton disagreed. He had the audacity to compare the Klan to the NAACP. “A violent organization? Well, they didn’t kill but a few people,” Sutton said. “The Klan wasn’t violent until they needed to be.” Sutton allegedly doesn’t know any Klan members remaining in his area, saying that most of them died after the 1960s. He did, however, welcome people to call him, write him a letter or boycott him if they disagreed. Sutton has worked at the paper since 1964, inheriting the publication from his father. The publication has a history of acclaim in the 1990s when it reported on a corrupt local sheriff. For his coverage, Sutton was inducted into the University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Communication Hall of Fame in 2007. That title has now been revoked in light of Sutton’s lynching article. The Advertiser reached out to the Alabama Press Association, the state trade association for newspapers in the state, to question whether or not Sutton and the Democrat-Reporter were members. APA executive director Felicia Mason responded, saying: “We do not agree with the opinion. However, APA is not a policing agency. We simply have no authority over what our member newspapers publish.” Smh. Per usual, the violent racists continue to have a platform in the streets and in the media.

This Black Financial Blogger Helped Create A Bill To Teach Middle Schoolers Money Management

Photo Credit: Anthony McKnight Middle school students in New Jersey are about to get a much needed crash course in adulting thanks in part to two black women determined to make sure they have the tools they need to succeed. Assemblywoman Angela McKnight and financial educator Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche worked together to draft and advocate a financial literacy bill that would give kids a fighting chance at the future. A1414, wil l instruct the State Board of Education to require school districts to incorporate financial literacy instruction into curriculums for enrolled students in grades 6 through 8. Photo Credit: Anthony McKnight First introduced by McKnight in 2016, the bill was signed into law by the state’s Acting Governor (and first ever black Lieutenant Governor) Sheila Oliver this Thursday at Jersey City’s  PS 34 President Barack Obama School . It was the culmination of three years of hard work on the part of McKnight and Aliche, who used her considerable platforms to assist with getting the word out. Photo Credit: Anthony McKnight “Early financial literacy should be an essential part of every school curriculum, because it’s a critical skill needed for success in adulthood,” said Aliche via press release. She shared portions of the signing ceremony with her community on social media, unable to contain her excitement. “Today New Jersey took a historic leap forward in helping our children secure a brighter future. Today was a manifestation of why I started The Budgetnista ; to help give people the tools the need to live richer lives,” she continued. Photo Credit: Anthony McKnight Mcknight’s fellow Assembly Democrats Nicholas Chiaravalloti, Eliana Pintor Marin, Jamel Holley, Benjie Wimberly and Annette Quijano served as co-sponsors for the bill as well lending their legislative support. While widely respected novels about opulent liars with questionable boundaries and near obsolete mathematical principles that have never shown up on the form to file an LLC have reigned supreme in the primary educational sphere, but not pratical financial information is being moved to the forefront. Information about things like the practical value of compound interest, or why it might not be the best idea to buy all those sweatshirts at the bookstore with your student loan disbursement check has been harder to find…but this bill helps to change all of this.  This law presents children with vital information that has the potential to change the course of their lives by preparing them to properly evaluate their finances and deal with debt as adults.   Regarding the bill, McKnight told Hello Beautiful , “One of the most important lessons a person can learn is how to manage their money. Many young people go into adulthood knowing little about finances, and end up making decisions that cost them in the long run.”  She added, “Teaching our kids early about the importance of managing their money and making sound financial decisions can prevent them from making costly mistakes and set them on the right financial path.” Hopefully, this bill will spread to multiple states. Scot Free: Redskins Baller Reuben Foster’s Domestic Violence Dropped By Florida State Attorney

Source: Icon Sportswire / Getty Reuben Foster’s Domestic Violence Charges Dropped The domestic violence problem among NFL players is still a major issue for the league. Today, one of their most recent suspects was allowed to walk away from his alleged crime unscathed. According to ESPN , San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster had the domestic violence against him dropped the State Attorney for lack of evidence. Prosecutors concluded there was insufficient evidence to file charges against Foster after “a meticulous review of the facts of the case,” said Estella Gray, director of communications for the State Attorney’s Office. Adonte Pointer, Attorney for the victim, Elissa Ennis, didn’t mince words in response to the State Attorney’s decision. “We’re disappointed. The prosecutor’s choice is yet another slap in the face to Miss Ennis, just like the one Mr. Foster gave her in Tampa,” Ennis’ attorney, Adante Pointer, told ABC News. “Elissa Ennis was fully ready to participate and hold him accountable. This is not a situation where she recanted, nor that the prosecutor had new evidence that it didn’t happen.” Just so that we’re all clear about what exactly Reuben was charged with… Tampa police said Foster and Ennis were involved in a verbal altercation and that “Foster slapped her phone out of her hand, pushed her in the chest area, and slapped her with an open hand on the left side of her face.” Police said a 1-inch scratch was observed on her left collarbone. This incident followed a February 2018 arrest where Reuben was suspected of domestic violence and weapons possession. Charges were dropped when Elissa recanted her initial testimony that Reuben hit her. She then said the recant was lie during an interview on GMA. A “love” lie. Scot. Free.

#BankingWhileBlack: Tellers Call Cops On Black Man For Thinking His Paycheck Was Too High

View post:

Source: Diane Macdonald / Getty We don’t know what is going on with 2018, but it seems that this is the year where Black people just living their lives seems to prompt folks to call the police called on us. Case in point: A Cleveland bank called the police on a Black customer because they allegedly believed his paycheck was “too high” and was fraudulent. . @Huntington_Bank employee calls cops on black man because they thought his paycheck was too high #racism #racist https://t.co/dU7YjPpkh1 — Raw Story (@RawStory) December 18, 2018 Paul McCowns claims that while he was trying to cash his first paycheck from his new job at an electric company, he was racially profiled by a teller at Huntington Bank, who refused to cash his check. According to WOIO TV , McCowns said his paycheck was a little over $1,000 and that he followed the bank’s rules of showing two forms of identification and a fingerprint, as required for non-Huntington customers. But for some reason, that wasn’t good enough. McCowns says that the employees began looking at the computer screen, questioning the transaction. “They tried to call my employer numerous times. He never picked up the phone,” he told WOIO. After tellers told him they couldn’t cash his check, McCowns said he left the bank. But when he got the parking lot, he saw the police cars and was instructed to get out his car. He was later handcuffed. Police then told him that the tellers had called 911 on him, a fact he didn’t know. WOIO obtained the 911 call and reported that the teller told the authorities, “He’s trying to cash a check and the check is fraudulent. It does not match our records.” When asked if McCowns knew that the police were being called on him, the teller replied, “No.” Shortly after, police got McCowns employer on the phone who confirmed that he worked for him and that his paycheck was that amount. A bank representative apologized for the teller’s behavior to the news channel, explaining that because of 11 cases of fraud in recent months, their employees were being “hyper-vigilant.” “We sincerely apologize to Mr. McCowns for this extremely unfortunate event,” the bank said in a statement. “We accept responsibility for contacting the police as well as our own interactions with Mr. McCowns. Anyone who walks into a Huntington branch should feel welcomed. Regrettably, that did not occur in this instance and we are very sorry.” However, McCowns isn’t hearing it. He wants for the bank to apologize to him directly for racial profiling. Meanwhile, a bank rep claims McCowns has yet to return their calls. How The Cash Bail System Can Literally Kill You

Read more from the original source:

T he in-custody death of a woman who languished in a Texas jail for months over an alleged minor nonviolent offense showed how the cash bail system can tragically kill people. See Also: Fight For Bail And Pretrial Reform Is Steadily Gaining Steam This Year The Bexar County medical examiner concluded that 61-year-old Janice Dotson-Stephens died Friday of natural causes, KSAT-TV reported. She was arrested in July for trespassing on private property and was sitting behind bars ever since because she couldn’t afford the $300 bond. The news outlet speculated that local bail bond companies would have charged her just $30, or 10 percent of her bond, to arrange her release. Dotson-Stephens’ family said they were unaware that she was in jail and believed she was getting treatment at a state hospital for mental illness. “We just felt that she shouldn’t have died as a criminal in the jailhouse. She wasn’t a criminal. She had mental health illness,” her daughter-in-law, Leticia Dotson , said . Anger over her death lit a fire under Alec Karakatsanis , the founder and executive director of Civil Rights Corps  who blamed society for Dotson-Stephens’ unfair treatment because she was poor and Black. “We are all responsible for the injustices of our legal system, and for the suffering inflicted in our name. We must all find out about what our court bureaucracy is doing to poor people and people of color every day, and then we should all organize against it,” he told NewsOne in an email Tuesday afternoon. A woman was held in jail for six months because she couldn’t afford to pay her $300 bond. She just died in custody. This is tragic and exactly why we need to reform our money bail system. https://t.co/FAQEoUQYVp — Kamala Harris (@SenKamalaHarris) December 18, 2018 African-Americans have long been  disproportionate victims of the cash bail system. Nationally, Blacks get detained in jail at nearly five times the rate as whites. Moreover, African-Americans aged 18 to 29 typically receive significantly higher bail amounts than other defendants. Activists were pushing for bail and pretrial reforms across the nation and some progressive local governments were instituting reforms. In Atlanta, for example, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms signed an ordinance in February that eliminated cash bonds for release from the City of Atlanta Detention Center. The movement received a major boost in July through a federal appeals court decision that upheld the constitutionality of a New Jersey law that reformed the state’s bail system. At the same time, the ruling provided a court-approved reform model that other states could follow. In the New Jersey  ruling , judges acknowledged that the state instituted the reforms to address inequalities—also found in other states—that kept poor people behind bars for nearly a year on average while awaiting a hearing because they couldn’t afford to pay bail of $2,500 or less. It appeared that the mistreatment of Dotson-Stephens may run deeper. The court ordered her to undergo a psychological evaluation while in custody, but the results were not reported immediately.
