Cop Sues Ava DuVernay And Netflix Over “When They See Us”

Source: WENN/Avalon / WENN When Ava DuVernay released the Emmy Award-winning Netflix series “ When They See Us ,” she likely knew that she would ruffle a few feathers. The truth can be a hard pill to swallow, so it’s not surprising that law enforcement figures who played a role in robbing the Exonerated Five of their childhoods are trying to rewrite history and misplace blame. According to TMZ , the latest jab comes from former Chicago police officer John Reid. While Reid does not appear in the film, he’s arguing in a defamation lawsuit that the series misrepresents and demonizes his work. Reid is credited with a police interrogation tactic known as The Reid Technique, which some police training firms have done away with because they suspect that it has a tendency to produce false confessions. In the series, the technique is referenced as “universally rejected” when a prosecutor and detective are discussing the manner in which the detective coerced confessions out of the boys. That’s truth to you.” According to the lawsuit, the Reid technique does not teach officers to withhold parental supervision or deny interrogation subjects of their rights. He adds that his technique teaches officers to take caution when interviewing minors. In summary, he claims the Reid Technique rejects the practices depicted by officers in the film. He argues that Ava “fabricated a scene designed to broadcast to the audience a conversation they made up that included false statements as to the Reid Technique.” In July, Reid says that he demanded a retraction of comments made about the interrogation technique; however, Netflix refused. Source: seksan Mongkhonkhamsao / Getty Rodney King Jr. Charged With 10 Felonies Within 21 Minutes Crime isn’t exactly a talent, but it certainly appears to be a skill set based on this crazy a$$ story on Fox8 . 29-year-old Rodney Edward King Jr. has been indicted on 10 felonies and 2 misdemeanors in Franklin County, Ohio for terrorizing the community on August 6 between 9:54 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. says Prosecutor Ron O’Brien. “During a half-hour time span, this man went from one location to the next, within a one block radius, committing multiple felonies against seven different victims,” he said. The indictment alleges he robbed five random homes, attempted to enter a cab and threw a rock at the vehicle, causing damage. From there, he got on a bus, pulled out a screwdriver and swung it at the driver, hitting the driver in the foot, O’Brien said. Charges against King consist of aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, felonious assault and aggravated menacing. If only Rodney put his super powers to use for good.

Read the original post:

Source: Andrew Chin / Getty A$AP Rocky has been fighting for his freedom since being jailed in Sweden after an altercation with an overzealous fan. Now, the A$AP Mob star has been charged with criminal assault and faces up to two years in jail. TMZ reports : A$AP Rocky has just been charged with a crime after spending weeks in a Swedish jail … prosecutors just hit him with Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm stemming from a street brawl in the country’s capital .. and if convicted he could spend 2 years behind bars. The prosecutor said A$AP will continue to be held in jail pending a trial … and the trial date has not been set, although it could be today. A rep for the prosecutor tells TMZ the trial will be held within the next 2 weeks. The prosecutor expects the trial will last 3 days. Two members of Rocky’s crew have also been charged with the same crime and they will also be held pending trial. The Swedish prosecutor just boasted he had access to more information than people on the internet. He said he’s reviewed video and also talked to witnesses, and determined the claims by Rocky and his 2 crew members of self defense and provocation didn’t hold water, despite the fact the alleged victim is the one who unrelentingly harassed and attacked Rocky and his crew first. The prosecutor in the case said in an update that he does not intend to seek the full two-year sentence but the final ruling ultimately comes down to what gets revealed in the upcoming trial. — Photo: Getty

Jermaine Dupri Creates So So Def Female Cypher After Criticizing Women Rappers

Source: Jason Mendez / Getty Jermaine Dupri caught an avalanche of slander from a bevy of women rappers after he criticized them and compared them to being like strippers. After getting a strong lesson on women in the game that can do whatever they want in music just like the men are allowed, the veteran Atlanta producer announced the launch of a new women-focused venture. “After all the calls,DMs, angry tweets and other messages saying “I am a major gatekeeper in the hip hop world, why don’t I invest in a female who is out here hustling and making a name for herself?” I decided to create the #SoSoDefFemalecypher, details coming soon,” Dupri wrote on his social media accounts. On Twitter, R&B singer 6lack checked Dupri on the curious timing of the SoSoDef Female Cypher. women in hip hop don’t need representation/approval from men (ya cypher sounds more reactive than proactive). if u don’t have a fav artist that hits on the subjects u wanna hear, u could solve that wit a quick search & some support. plus, IF they do wanna talk about sex, they can https://t.co/9nX46FDUia — black (@6LACK) July 12, 2019 “[W]omen in hip hop don’t need representation/approval from men (ya cypher sounds more reactive than proactive). if u don’t have a fav artist that hits on the subjects u wanna hear, u could solve that wit a quick search & some support. plus, IF they do wanna talk about sex, they can,” 6lack wrote via Twitter. Dupri fired back with, “You right!! they can talk about whateva they wanna talk about and I can have my opinion right ?” which didn’t endd there. 6lack returned fire saying, “sure, but “they all talkin about the same thing” ain’t accurate lol. i got an amazing playlist that i didn’t even break a sweat to make.” Time will tell if the So So Def boss nails the concept. Four Years Without Sandy: What Sandra Bland Taught Us About Life & Death In America

Source: NewsOne Screenshots / NewsOne Now Four years after Sandra Bland  was found dead in her jail cell in Waller County, Texas, America finds itself at a crossroads. In the wake of intense violence nationwide and a President who emboldens this type of violence, we must decide now if we are going to allow systemic violence against marginalized communities to become part of the status quo, or are we going to make a change. In spite of the countless injustices that have transpired since her death, it is impossible not to be haunted by Sandra’s story — not just for the sheer scope of its tragedy, but also for how regular she was. Sandra could have been any one of us. Four years later, racial tensions have only grown progressively worse in America. On this day, it’s important to reflect on the lessons we learned from Sandra, whose light and legacy can never be dimmed. Here is what Sandra has taught us: You Can Control Your Legacy Too often, Black victims of police brutality end up facing a trial in the public eye. Mainstream media often depicts them as somehow deserving of the horrendous treatment they received. But Sandra’s commitment to documenting her life meant that she was empowered to leave her own legacy and tell her own story beyond her death. Her vlog, #SandySpeaks, gave us all the chance to get to know how she lived rather than just how she died. She could not be erased. Furthermore, her family’s activism beyond her death has left a profound impact on today’s civil rights movement . The tragedy they experienced spurned them into action. And those actions are proof of the impact she had on their lives. Respectability Politics Won’t Save Us Black people are often told that what they wear, how they speak, and what they do can somehow save them from racism. It is one of the great myths of modern society. It’s hard to think of a more “respectable” person than Sandra. She was an educated, accomplished, beautiful woman. She was getting ready to begin a new career. She had a promising future. And still, she died in police custody under extremely mysterious circumstances. According to a recent report in the The Guardian , “based on the latest national figures available from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 4,980 prisoners in US correctional facilities died in 2014, a nearly 3% increase from 2013. In addition, in state prisons, the mortality rate was 275 for every 100,000 people, the highest since data collection began in 2001.” We have to stop holding Black people to standards that we believe will save us in a system that is failing to protect us. Trayvon Martin did not die because of his hoodie. Alton Sterling didn’t die because of his previous issues with the law. Education and career choice couldn’t save Sandra or Philando Castile . They were victims of a racist system that needs to be changed. It’s Not Only Black Men Who Are In Danger The #SayHerName movement has been around for some time, but it was Sandra’s death, along with female victims like Korryn Gaines , Natasha McKenna , Rekia Boyd , and Kindra Chapman that thrust it into the national dialogue. But if Sandra is proof of anything, it’s that we have a long way to go. Were it not for social media and the tireless efforts of her family, we may never have known her name. It’s not hard to imagine just how many female victims remain ghosts in the public persona. Black women are one of the world’s most marginalized populations and we can no longer operate under the illusion that just because we aren’t hearing about it, it’s not happening. Petition To Get A$AP Rocky Out Of Swedish Prison Hits 350K Signatures In 1 Day #JusticeForRocky

Source: David Wolff – Patrick / Getty A$AP Rocky and his ongoing ordeal in Sweden has sparked the creation of a petition to hopefully spring the rapper from a reportedly poorly-kept prison. So far, the petition has over 370,000 signatures and counting, all in hopes that it gets the attention of officials in the European nation. From the Change.org petition: Upon being detained, Rocky was denied his request to counsel which is in violation of Article 36 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, to which Sweden is a signatory. Everyone has the same rights to be treated fairly upon detainment and should be given fair and equal access to such rights. Since, he has been allowed to visit with a U.S. Embassy Consult and attorney, but only in the presence of Swedish officials. It is extremely troubling and worrisome that the laws are not being applied equally in these circumstances. On Monday, July 8th, we filed an appeal with the Swedish Supreme Court to have Rocky released from the inhumane conditions and the clear violation of human rights. They rejected the filing, which means Rocky will remain in prison for two weeks. The conditions of the facility are horrific. Some of the inhumane conditions Rocky and his colleagues are facing at the Stockholm Detention Center include 24/7 solitary confinement, restriction of amenities for the most basic of human functions, access to palatable and life sustaining food as well as unsanitary conditions. According to the petition description, Rocky could face an additional two weeks in the prison according to the prosecutor’s wishes to extend the trial until August. Empire Has Been Renewed. But Has Jussie Smollett Been Canceled?

Fox has some good news for fans of Empire and also for embattled star Jussie Smollet: First, for viewers of this intense drama, the network has decided to renew it for a sixth season. Second, for Smollet itself, the network has decided NOT to bring him back as a regular cast member, meaning he has more time than ever before to orchestrate his next so-called attack . Sorry. Too soon? Executives have seemingly made a choice to pick up Empire for new episodes, yet have also made it clear that Smollett will not be returning. The statement issues by Fox is not as clear as it could be, however, leaving the door slightly open for the actor to one day reprise his role of Jamal. “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to ‘Empire,” reads this message from Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television. The statement comes on the heels of quite a past few months for Smollett. When we last saw his character, Jamal was getting married and seemingly getting sent off with a happy ending to his story. He had been written out of the final two Season 5 episodes following a bizarre, controversial and downright confounding run-in with the Chicago Police Department. As you must know by now, Smollett alleged that he was the victim of a hate crime in late January, claiming that two white men beat him up and screamed racial/anti-gay epithets in his direction. After an investigation, however, police actually arrested Smollett for falsifying a report and making up the entire incident. Just when it seemed as if he would go to jail or go to trial for his role in this very strange “assault,” the charges against Smollett were dropped. And yet… even after they were dropped… the Chicago Mayor and even the prosecutor who chose to drop them made it evident in public statements that they believed Smollett was guilty. The latter simply didn’t think it was worth wasting more city money and resources of his prosecution. Or something. It remains very confusing what happened there. But the bottom line is that Smollett is a free man and that his co-stars recently made it very cleae they want him back on Empire. Consider THIS STATEMENT they wrote in Smollett’s passionate defense. Signed by Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Gabourey Sidibe and others, the letter runs down Smollett’s charitable efforts and includes a section that reads: It is why now, more than ever, we must stand together as a family. A family is there for us in good times and bad. It can cut through the noise and confusion to understand that there is a person in the center of all this who deserves nothing more than to move forward with his life. Due to the negative coverage surrounding Smollett, however, it appears as if producers and higher-ups do not agree. Why is there still a chance he does appear on Season 6? The city of Chicago has filed a civil lawsuit against Smollett . Officials are looking to recoup the $130,000 in expenses that it spent in investigating the actor’s alleged attack, while also trying to get on some sort of legal record that the guy is guilty as sin. Perhaps if Smollett comes out on top in this case, Fox will reconsider his future on Empire. But it seems like a long shot at the moment. Empire’ continues to break barriers with its emotionally powerful storytelling, and it remains a core part of the Fox legacy,  said Fox Entertainment’s president of entertainment Michael Thorn. They added on Tuesday evening: We want to thank everyone on the show – Taraji, Terrence and the entire cast, as well as Lee, Danny, Brett, Sanaa, Brian, Francie, Dennis and their teams – all of whom have done a tremendous job this season. We know there are so many more stories to tell, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for Season Six. Will you continue to watch Empire without Smollett?

Former NFL Player Brandon Browner Wants His Attempted Murder Conviction Thrown Out Because He Suffers From CTE

Source: Boston Globe / Getty Former NFL Player Blames CTE As Reason He Accepted Plea Deal According to Bleacher Report , former NFL cornerback Brandon Browner has filed an appeal of his attempted murder conviction, saying he was “unfit to agree to his plea deal” because he was “dealing with undiagnosed bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder at the time”. His lawyers are arguing Browner’s mental health problems could possibly be the result of CTE suffered from his lengthy football career. This past December, Browner was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading no-contest to attempted murder and two counts of cruelty to a child. He was reportedly arrested in July after attacking his ex-girlfriend in front of her two children. Browner fired his legal representation after agreeing to his plea and hired famed attorney Chris Darden, the prosecutor who handled the O.J. Simpson case. Darden is preparing to ask the judge to throw out the plea agreement.

New Jersey Barbershop Owner Arrested For Performing Illegal Laser Surgery

Source: Kim Steele / Getty North Jersey Barbershop owner Young Hwan Choi has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault after authorities say he performed unlicensed laser surgery on a woman in a procedure that left her badly injured. NJ.com reports, Choi, who owns Shil La Barber Shop in Palisades Park, allegedly conducted botched laser treatment on the victim’s face in November 2017. Investigators found the 72-year-old was not a doctor and not licensed to provide the treatment, according to authorities. Meanwhile, the prosecutor’s office said the investigation was continuing and asked anyone else who possibly suffered from similar treatments to call Palisades Park police. Mr. Choi’s botch surgery left scars on the victim’s face and chin. He was arrested Friday and is scheduled for a court appearance next Wednesday.
