Kurt Sutter, Sons of Anarchy Creator, Fired From FX for Being an "Abrasive D-ck"

Kurt Sutter, the executive producer best known for having created Sons of Anarchy and then its spinoff, Mayans M.C., has been fired by FX. The writer himself confirmed the news in a letter he sent to the cast and crew of the latter drama on Thursday afternoon. According to The Hollywood Reporter insiders, Sutter was let go due to “multiple complaints” over his behavior on the series, which chronicles a biker gang viewers first met on Sons of Anarchy. As mentioned above, Sutter detailed his dismissal by FX CEO John Landgraf and Disney TV Studios and ABC Entertainment chairman Dana Walden in a message sent to those who had been working with him on The Mayans for the past two years. In this message, he described himself as an “abrasive dick.” Representatives for FX and 20th Century Fox TV have not yet commented on the development, while representatives for Sutter did not respond to the aforementioned outlet’s multiple requests for a remark. Filming and production on the second season of Mayans M.C. has already been completed. Last month, Sutter told fans at the Season 2 premiere that he was planning to down from his executive producer role should this Sons of Anarchy follow-up earn a third season from FX. “It’s time for the white man to leave the building,” he told the audience at the Hollywood screening. Sutter went on to say at the time that a person of color should run the writers’ room because it’s a drama about a Mexican biker gang on the California-Mexico border. Always an outspoken showrunner, Sutter appeared as the character of Otto in multiple episodes of Sons of Anarchy. He was also one of the main writers on legendary FX drama The Shield. “This morning I was fired by Dana Walden and John Landgraf for all the complaints levied against me,” wrote Sutter in his letter to the cast and crew, adding: “Not the way I wanted to end my 18 year relationship with FX. At least being fired for being an abrasive dick is on brand… “I deeply apologize if I’ve made people feel less than or unsupported. My intention was literally the opposite. But clearly I’ve not been paying attention. “My arrogance and chronic distraction has created wreckage. Just know, I adore this cast and crew.” Elsewhere, however, Sutter was far more pointed in his criticism of the decision. Here is his lengthy letter in full: Let me begin by saying, I know who I am. I know the impact of my process. I’m intense and passionate. I take what I do very seriously. That’s what having a vision manifests. And if you fuck with that vision, I’m gonna push back. When I’m right, I let the work speak for itself. When I’m wrong, I own it, make amends and fix it. I pride myself on having a supportive and empowering set. I try to acknowledge all the hard work everyone does. I’m clear that it’s a collaborative effort. And I try to pass that philosophy down to my writers and producers so they do the same. Disney letting me go today was apparently based on data collected by HR and Business Affairs from writers, producers, cast and crew. They claim the intel suggests that I created a climate of hostility, favoritism and enabled a set where no one felt safe or appreciated. I know that’s not true. I’m not saying it was all sunshine and roses, but I’m close with most of those guys and they love going to work. I’m also not sure how, having been on set… maybe three times all season, I was able to singularly create that much damage Never did I think the ship was off course until after mid season when I suddenly was bombarded with unfavorable reports about the tension on set. I am not going to mention names, because I don’t want to point fingers. So yes, there were complaints. And ultimately whomever they are about lands on me to fix. That’s when I contacted the network to let them know. They told me they’d look into it. And to sit tight. So I did. Who I have been hard on this season is the studio and network. I’ve felt the creative scrutiny of Disney from day one. Notes on scripts and cuts have been heavy handed. Demanding a level of dumbing-down story and inane PC restraints like I’ve never experienced before. I genuinely feared for the creative future of the storytelling. So I pushed back.Hard. No different than I have in the past. In fact, much tamer than I ever was on SOA. However, I was dealing with personnel who didn’t know me. And my level of… passion. Clearly I ruffled a few mouse ears. I know my role at Mayans MC was going to be greatly reduced. I am handing off the show to Elgin. So it’s not the job that’s the issue. What pisses me off, what hurts the most, is that John Landgraf and Dana Walden sat across from me and sited a summary of a slanted truth formulated by lawyers and clerks. They blamed my dismissal on the cast and crew. People I care about. People I respect. They had no first hand knowledge of anything they were saying. They’ve never been on set or spoken to any of my people. I’m not saying all of the intel was bullshit. But I know that’s not why I was fired. The truth is, the suits wanted me gone. I stepped on toes and bruised egos. And in this Disney regime,  I’m dangerous to the wholesome brand. And clearly not worth the trouble. So 18 years of friendship, loyalty and producing quality television, was flushed down the drain. They threw me under the fucking bus. I send this diatribe because I feel deeply wronged. They embarrassed me. They created a false narrative that could damage my reputation and career. I want them to understand the depth of that mistake. Talk soon. Thanks. ks. sutterink, the letter concluded.”

America’s Got Talent Season 14: Did the Right Act Win?

America most definitely has talent. After yet another summer of impressive singer, dancers, magicians and plenty more took to the NBC stage on a weekly basis, this much has  been made clear. But who in America has the most talent? According to this beloved reality series? This question answered on the America’s Got Talent Season 14 finale on Wednesday night. Cue the drumroll and then cue the congratulatory message to… … KODI LEE! After weeks of competition, Lee was been crowned the latest champion yesterday evening, besting fellow finalists opera singer Emanne Beasha, violinist Tyler Butler-Figueroa, dance troupe Light Balance Kids, singer Benicio Bryant and Ndlovu Youth Choir in the process. “I feel so amazing,” he told Terry Crews after winning. “Unbelievable!” In many ways, this result felt preordained a long time ago. And also well-deserved. The 22 year-old singer and pianist is blind and autistic, yet neither of those attributes prevented him from putting on incredible performances all season long. He run to the title started back when he earned Gabrielle Union’s golden buzzer in the first audition episode of the season. In addition to the honor of being the winner, Lee takes home $1 million and will headline shows from November 7-10 at Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Along with his memorable vocal abilities, Lee’s life story quickly made him a Season 14  fan favorite. The Lake Elsinore, California, native was born with optic nerve hypoplasia and diagnosed with autism at age 4. His mother, Tina, accompanied him on stage for the entire competition Truly inspiring stuff all around. “He’s making people believe in something they didn’t even know is attainable. He’s magic,” Union previously told People Magazine of Lee. Speaking to the press about an hour after the finale, Lee exclaimed: “Heck, yeah! I’m a winner!” The finale features performances from the likes of Cher, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Leona Lewis.  It also gave us a surprise reunion between Simon Cowell and his former fellow American Idol judge, Paula Abdul, who secretly performed with Light Balance Kids and only revealed herself at the end of the performance. Much to Cowell’s shock. In the end, though, it all came back to Lee and down to Lee. “Everybody rooted for him and he’s probably one of the most popular winners we’ve had on one of these shows,” Cowell said, concluding: “He’s got an amazing talent. … The guy’s just an absolute star. He’s one of those contestants you’re going to remember. You’ll always remember that first audition.” CONGRATS TO KODI LEE!

Dean Unglert and Caelynn Miller-Keyes: We’re Making So Much Love in "Pleasure Town"

On Tuesday night, three couples broke up on Bachelor in Paradise . But while these tandems reached the end of their line, another Bachelor Nation twosome made it clear that getting off the island together a day before simply meant that they’d be… … getting off together, if you know what we mean. On Monday, September 9, Dean and Caelynn stunned viewers when they decided to exit Bachelor in Paradise, departing Mexico with a seemingly uncertain future. But the reality stars then went ahead yesterday and made it clear yesterday that they are doing quite well, thank you very much. Between the two of them, Caelynn and Dean shared a trio of photos of their time together… which has apparently included one-on-one dates in a van, with a nice view and very little clothing on. “Sorry we had to leave #bachelorinparadise early, the vantasy suite waits for no one,” Dean jokingly captioned one post. He even tagged the location as “Pleasure Town,” which is pretty amazing. Caelynn then reposted her lover’s picture and gave an update on their new life on the road. “Lots of ramen, very few showers, and a whole lot of happiness,” she wrote. In another one of the adorable snapshots (below), all of which were taken inside Unglert’s van, the two are cuddled up as they look out onto the ocean. They probably feel like the only people in the entire world here, you know? These images, and the romance they represent, mark a stark departure from where Miller-Keyes and Unglert were just a few weeks ago on  air. They had going strong until Dean decided to dump Caelynn on her birthday and leave the series. She was crushed, but then a few days later, she was smitten with Connor Saeli and seemed happy as can be — that is, until Unglert chose to return and ask for a second chance. Then, on Monday night’s installment, Unglert came back to reveal that he had a change of heart and wanted Miller-Keyes to leave the beach with him. “I’m a changed man,” he told her. “I’m scared of getting hurt again,” Miller-Keyes replied. “I can’t tell you exactly what’s going to happen next, but I know I want to try,” Dean simply said. He sure looks like he both tried and succeeded, huh? And while it’s unclear where this relationship isi headed next, Dean and Caelynn don’t seem to be in a major rush to get there. For now, they are just gonna enjoy the view — and each other. View Slideshow: Peter Weber as The Bachelor: A Nation Reacts!

Lamar Odom and GF Sabrina Parr: Starring in a New Reality Series!

To his continuing credit, Lamar Odom cannot stop gushing over new girlfriend Sabrina Parr . In fact, the pair seem to be moving incredibly quickly. Just over a month after going Instagram Official as a couple, the two are already shooting a brand new reality series. Lamar and Sabrina were spotted out and about together. As usual, the basketball legend was asked some friendly questions by paparazzi. One paparazzo asked him what he and Sabrina had been filming. It was a very good question, and got an interesting answer. “Me and my girl, we have a new show. Sabrina & Lamar ,” he revealed. He furnished a detail and rhymed at the same time, adding: “Sabrina Parr is the star.” Then, on Instagram, Sabrina responded when fans brought this up. “@lamarodom just can’t hold water to save his life LOL,” she teased. By that, she means that he couldn’t keep a secret. “The secrets out now [though] …” Sabrina admitted with resignation. “By the way …” she revealed. “The show name is not Sabrina and Lamar LOL.” While she does not reveal the show’s actual title, Sabrina does treat fans to an anecdote about her man. “I’ll tell y’all a quick story,” Sabrina writes. “From the day I met Lamar, he kept saying to me, ‘man you’re like a star.’” “Then every time [people] would come up to him to get a pic,” she continues. “He would say ‘that’s Sabrina Parr. She’s the real star.’” “That’s exactly how he’s treated me since day one [though] …” Sabrina gushes. She says that he treats her “like I’m the star and I’m the one who should get all the attention!” Sabrina explains that this is why Lamar gave the answer that he did. “That’s why he said this to the media,” Sabrina reasons. Full of affection, she acknowledges that “He truly feels that way.” “Meanwhile … I’m just tryna wear my Nike hat and sweats in peace LOL,” she jokes. Hmmm, I know that she’s why Lamar gave up porn , but I think that I actually really like her. “I think a lot of you will be surprised as to what exactly is gonna be included on the show,” Sabrina teases fans and followers. “How many of y’all will be watching?” she asks. “If you’re not gonna watch it,” she instructs. “Then just don’t respond.” Sabrina explains: “cuz I’m not talking to you and I don’t feel like blocking anyone today.” “So be nice on this beautiful Monday,” she requests. We really, truly do not know what sort of show the pair of them are cooking up. It’s good to hear that the show’s title won’t be quite as close to Khloe & Lamar as some had feared from his statement. Sabrina really does sound head-over-heels in love with him and appreciates how he treats her. That is truly heartwarming, you know? Maybe their relationship is still in the honeymoon phase, or maybe they’re just super compatible. We can’t wait to see what they’re like on reality television. That way, fans will really get to know her. View Slideshow: Lamar Odom: 17 Most Bat$hit Crazy Bombshells from His Memoir

TV Cancellations: Which Hurts the Most?

So… did your favorite show survive? With most network television shows wrapping up their current seasons in mid-May, viewers around the country have been on the edges of their seats due to a number of suspenseful finales. But also for another, more meaningful reason: They've been anxious about these programs airing any episodes beyond said finales. Indeed, it's renewal/cancellation time around the TV dial, with all four major networks making major announcements over the course of the past few days. The following shows did not make it. They have been canceled. Which will be the most painful to never watch ever again? 1. I Feel Bad This NBC sitcom centered on a mother and wife who didn’t ever feel appreciated at home. Alas, it wasn’t appreciated by viewers, either. 2. The Cool Kids Not cool at all, according to Fox viewers. They never cared about this very lame sitcom. 3. The Passage This Fox drama was based on popular source material. But it probably should have been on HBO or something. 4. Lethal Weapon The off-screen drama was more interesting than anything on screen for this Fox drama, which is gone after three seasons. 5. Star Forgive the obvious pun here, but this Fox drama will not be shining bright for the network in 2020. 6. Murphy Brown We loved the original, but what was CBS thinking bringing this back for a revival?!? View Slideshow

Empire Has Been Renewed. But Has Jussie Smollett Been Canceled?

Fox has some good news for fans of Empire and also for embattled star Jussie Smollet: First, for viewers of this intense drama, the network has decided to renew it for a sixth season. Second, for Smollet itself, the network has decided NOT to bring him back as a regular cast member, meaning he has more time than ever before to orchestrate his next so-called attack . Sorry. Too soon? Executives have seemingly made a choice to pick up Empire for new episodes, yet have also made it clear that Smollett will not be returning. The statement issues by Fox is not as clear as it could be, however, leaving the door slightly open for the actor to one day reprise his role of Jamal. “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to ‘Empire,” reads this message from Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television. The statement comes on the heels of quite a past few months for Smollett. When we last saw his character, Jamal was getting married and seemingly getting sent off with a happy ending to his story. He had been written out of the final two Season 5 episodes following a bizarre, controversial and downright confounding run-in with the Chicago Police Department. As you must know by now, Smollett alleged that he was the victim of a hate crime in late January, claiming that two white men beat him up and screamed racial/anti-gay epithets in his direction. After an investigation, however, police actually arrested Smollett for falsifying a report and making up the entire incident. Just when it seemed as if he would go to jail or go to trial for his role in this very strange “assault,” the charges against Smollett were dropped. And yet… even after they were dropped… the Chicago Mayor and even the prosecutor who chose to drop them made it evident in public statements that they believed Smollett was guilty. The latter simply didn’t think it was worth wasting more city money and resources of his prosecution. Or something. It remains very confusing what happened there. But the bottom line is that Smollett is a free man and that his co-stars recently made it very cleae they want him back on Empire. Consider THIS STATEMENT they wrote in Smollett’s passionate defense. Signed by Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Gabourey Sidibe and others, the letter runs down Smollett’s charitable efforts and includes a section that reads: It is why now, more than ever, we must stand together as a family. A family is there for us in good times and bad. It can cut through the noise and confusion to understand that there is a person in the center of all this who deserves nothing more than to move forward with his life. Due to the negative coverage surrounding Smollett, however, it appears as if producers and higher-ups do not agree. Why is there still a chance he does appear on Season 6? The city of Chicago has filed a civil lawsuit against Smollett . Officials are looking to recoup the $130,000 in expenses that it spent in investigating the actor’s alleged attack, while also trying to get on some sort of legal record that the guy is guilty as sin. Perhaps if Smollett comes out on top in this case, Fox will reconsider his future on Empire. But it seems like a long shot at the moment. Empire’ continues to break barriers with its emotionally powerful storytelling, and it remains a core part of the Fox legacy,  said Fox Entertainment’s president of entertainment Michael Thorn. They added on Tuesday evening: We want to thank everyone on the show – Taraji, Terrence and the entire cast, as well as Lee, Danny, Brett, Sanaa, Brian, Francie, Dennis and their teams – all of whom have done a tremendous job this season. We know there are so many more stories to tell, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for Season Six. Will you continue to watch Empire without Smollett?

Olivia Jade Giannulli: Lori Loughlin’s Daughter Under Federal Investigation?!

For a handful C-list stars and their offspring, the college admissions bribery scandal is a nightmare from which they just can’t awaken. As you’ve likely heard by now, Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman were among those ensnared by the FBI investigation dubbed Operation Varsity Blues. Since then, the actresses’ fates have diverged in a number of interesting ways. Huffman expressed what seemed like genuine remorse and accepted a plea deal. Loughlin — who stands accused of much more egregious crimes — opted not to accept a plea and will instead do battle with prosecutors in a proper trial. As a result, legal experts predict that Loughlin will almost certainly go to prison . And yet, insiders say the actress best known for portraying Aunt Becky on Full House is unfazed and remains convinced that she’ll beat the case. Here’s hoping Loughlin’s daughter, Olivia Jade Giannulli, inherited her mother’s unflappable nature because there’s reason to believe the influencer and aspiring cosmetics mogul is being investigated by the FBI. Loughlin allegedly doled out bribes and conned admissions boards on behalf of both of her daughter so that they would be accepted to USC as members of the school’s crew team. (Even though neither of them had ever rowed crew.) The Daily Mail is now reporting that one of Loughlin’s daughters is under federal investigation. Insiders claim the investigation was confirmed by letter the FBI sent to the admissions board at USC informing them that one of their students may soon face criminal charges. It’s currently unclear which daughter is being investigated, but many have assumed it’s Olivia who might soon be in trouble, as she’s been one of this scandal’s most outspoken and high-profile figures from the beginning. “It is a not-so-veiled threat,” said one source who claims to have seen the letter. “[The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts] is making it pretty clear that they have evidence that very strongly suggests she knew of the illegal plot.” Amazingly, the fact that her daughter might soon be brought up on charges was not enough to get Loughlin to accept a plea deal. Olivia has already dropped out of USC , allegedly for fear of being bullied as a result of the scandal. She has also lost endorsement deals with Sephora and several other cosmetics and beauty companies. Now, it looks as though her situation is soon to go from bad to worse.
