Photo Credit: Anthony McKnight Middle school students in New Jersey are about to get a much needed crash course in adulting thanks in part to two black women determined to make sure they have the tools they need to succeed. Assemblywoman Angela McKnight and financial educator Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche worked together to draft and advocate a financial literacy bill that would give kids a fighting chance at the future. A1414, wil l instruct the State Board of Education to require school districts to incorporate financial literacy instruction into curriculums for enrolled students in grades 6 through 8. Photo Credit: Anthony McKnight First introduced by McKnight in 2016, the bill was signed into law by the state’s Acting Governor (and first ever black Lieutenant Governor) Sheila Oliver this Thursday at Jersey City’s  PS 34 President Barack Obama School . It was the culmination of three years of hard work on the part of McKnight and Aliche, who used her considerable platforms to assist with getting the word out. Photo Credit: Anthony McKnight “Early financial literacy should be an essential part of every school curriculum, because it’s a critical skill needed for success in adulthood,” said Aliche via press release. She shared portions of the signing ceremony with her community on social media, unable to contain her excitement. “Today New Jersey took a historic leap forward in helping our children secure a brighter future. Today was a manifestation of why I started The Budgetnista ; to help give people the tools the need to live richer lives,” she continued. Photo Credit: Anthony McKnight Mcknight’s fellow Assembly Democrats Nicholas Chiaravalloti, Eliana Pintor Marin, Jamel Holley, Benjie Wimberly and Annette Quijano served as co-sponsors for the bill as well lending their legislative support. While widely respected novels about opulent liars with questionable boundaries and near obsolete mathematical principles that have never shown up on the form to file an LLC have reigned supreme in the primary educational sphere, but not pratical financial information is being moved to the forefront. Information about things like the practical value of compound interest, or why it might not be the best idea to buy all those sweatshirts at the bookstore with your student loan disbursement check has been harder to find…but this bill helps to change all of this.  This law presents children with vital information that has the potential to change the course of their lives by preparing them to properly evaluate their finances and deal with debt as adults.   Regarding the bill, McKnight told Hello Beautiful , “One of the most important lessons a person can learn is how to manage their money. Many young people go into adulthood knowing little about finances, and end up making decisions that cost them in the long run.”  She added, “Teaching our kids early about the importance of managing their money and making sound financial decisions can prevent them from making costly mistakes and set them on the right financial path.” Hopefully, this bill will spread to multiple states. Farrah Abraham: STILL In Jail After Telling Cops to Go F–k Themselves!

Oh, Farrah. When you got fired from Teen Mom OG for generally being an awful person, we thought your days of entertaining/depressing us with your bonkers bad behavior had come to an end. In retrospect, we should’ve known a day like today was coming. In case you missed it, Farrah was arrested on charges of battery and trespassing last night after allegedly assaulting a male staff member at the famed Beverly Hills Hotel. According to the police report, she was booked at 1:48 AM. As of right now, she’s still being held on $500 bail. We still don’t know what set Farrah off (although we do know that booze was involved), but TMZ has obtained video of Farrah’s arrest , and as you may have guessed — it ain’t pretty. At one point, one of the arresting officers begins searching Farrah’s purse, and the former reality star demonstrates that even in her state of inebriation, she’s well aware of the reality of her situation: “Do you want to do that on camera so that everyone at TMZ can see?” Farrah asks. Further proving that her diva-like attitude remains intact, Farrah tells one of the officers, “I don’t want to be arrested.” She then repeats the phrase “I am not going to be provoked to be arrested” several times. Then things really take a turn for the worse, as Abraham screams, “I am not resisting you!” before breaking down in tears (a classic Farrah tactic) and accusing one of the officers of hurting her. A spokesperson for Farrah issued a statement today in which she thanked fans for their “concern” and urged them to “remember there are two sides to every story.” Meanwhile, police have issued their own statement, in which they state the painfully obvious and confirm that Farrah has hammered at the time of her arrest. “Officers noted that Abraham exhibited signs of intoxication during the investigation,” stated Lieutenant Elisabeth Albanese with the Beverly Hills Police Department this afternoon. It may be hard to believe, given her many years of batsh-t behavior, but this is only Farrah’s second arrest. The first took place in 2013, when she was hauled in on DUI charges . Back then, she pled guilty and was sentenced to six months probation. This time, Farrah might find herself facing a stiffer penalty. For one thing, she’s no longer a first offender. On top of that, there’s a legal precedent in this case, as it was just last year that Farrah’s fellow reality star Kim Richards was arrested for a drunken assault at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Richards very narrowly avoided jail time, but even if Farrah proves equally lucky, she’s got another problem on her hands: Sources have indicated that Farrah’s 9-year-old daughter Sophia was with her in the hotel on the night of the incident. Sophia is currently in the care of a nanny, but Farrah might soon be facing a custody challenge from her mother, Debra Danielsen: “She needs to be with her family, not about strangers and volatility and her mother being arrested,” Danielsen told Radar when asked about Sophia. “It’s very disgusting. She needs to go to school… She needs to not be dragged on a party all over the world.” We’ll have further updates on this developing situation as more information becomes available. Keep It In The Closet: ESPN Releasing Report Claiming The Baltimore Ravens Covered Up Ray Rice Abuse Video

ESPN To Release Report On Ravens Covering Up Abusive Ray Rice Video Did the Baltimore Ravens organization know about the video of Ray Rice knocking out his wife in an elevator long before it went public? ESPN says yes. via NYPost The Ravens and the NFL were reeling Friday night from an explosive report stating the team conducted a wide-ranging cover-up of Ray Rice’s elevator assault almost immediately after it happened in February. In a 7,000-word story published shortly after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s apologetic news conference, ESPN reported Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti and several high-ranking team officials worked feverishly to keep Rice out of jail and keep the video of him knocking out his then-fiancee from ever becoming public. The network also reported that, once the video was released Sept. 8 by TMZ, Bisciotti cut Rice and immediately tried to buy the former Rutgers star’s silence with a post-football job offer with the team. The Ravens released a statement late Friday claiming the story contained “numerous errors, inaccuracies, false assumptions and, perhaps, misunderstandings,” though the team refused to specify any. ESPN responded immediately by saying the network “stands behind [the] reporting” of the story’s authors, which include Pulitzer Prize winner Don Van Natta Jr. The most damaging detail in the report alleged the Ravens’ security director knew the exact details of the elevator incident just hours after it happened Feb. 15 at the since-closed Revel casino because a police lieutenant described the video to him as the lieutenant was watching it. Sounds like the Ravens definitely have some explaining to do!

Whitney Houston’s Memorial: What We Know So Far

Before Saturday’s memorial, we take a look back at a week’s worth of news following the untimely passing of a pop icon. By John Mitchell Whitney Houston Photo: Jan Persson/ Getty Images Music fans around the world were shocked when reports of Whitney Houston ‘s unexpected death were confirmed last Saturday. The singer had been staying at the Beverly Hilton Hotel as she prepared for Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party and was seen out on the town in the days before her passing. While the Los Angeles County coroner’s office has not confirmed the cause of the legendary “I Will Always Love You” singer’s death, a lethal mix of prescription medication and alcohol is heavily rumored to be the culprit. The week since Houston’s passing has been a hectic one, as officials scramble to find out what killed the singer and whether negligence on the part of medical professionals treating her is at least partially to blame. Meanwhile, Houston’s family, friends, fans and music-industry peers continue to mourn the star, who will be laid to rest Saturday (February 18) in her native Newark, New Jersey . Flags across the state will be flown at half-staff this weekend out of respect for Houston. With so much information pouring in since Houston’s death, it’s been difficult to discern what is fact, speculation and pure rumor. So as the world prepares for her memorial service, we have pulled together what we know so far about Houston’s passing, the impact it’s had on the entertainment industry, the reaction of her fans, family and friends, and her legacy. Houston’s Untimely Death Twitter first ignited with rumors of Houston’s death last Saturday after emergency medical professionals were called to the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The sad rumor was confirmed to MTV News by Houston’s rep, Kristen Foster, with Beverly Hills Police Lieutenant Mark Rosen telling on-scene reporters , “Someone in her entourage found her unresponsive in her room. … Our detectives are still in the room, and her body is still here as well. I can confirm that Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. this afternoon at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. We received a call at 3:43 p.m. from hotel security and Beverly Hills Fire, and police responded minutes later.” Houston was found in the bathtub of her hotel suite by a member of her personal staff. Paramedics initiated CPR on the “I Will Always Love You” singer but were unable to revive her. No illegal drugs were found in Houston’s suite, however, prescription medication was discovered . On Monday, Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office downplayed speculation that Houston had succumbed to an accidental overdose, saying “not many prescription bottles” were found, adding that the amount of medication found did not correspond with the amounts typically present in deaths attributed to overdose. Rather, the current leading theory remains that it was combining those medications (heavily rumored to be Xanax and other mood-altering benzodiazepines) with alcohol that led to the star’s death . Houston’s family is, of course, deeply distraught over her unexpected passing. Daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown was taken by paramedics from the Beverly Hilton Hotel to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in a state of emotional distress early Sunday. Her father and Houston’s ex-husband, Bobby Brown , flew to California to be with his daughter after breaking down himself onstage Saturday night. “First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all,” Brown told the audience at a New Edition concert in Mississippi. “Second, I would like to say, ‘I love you Whitney.’ The hardest thing for me to do is come on this stage.” Houston’s family released a statement, saying, “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney. This is an unimaginable tragedy and we will miss her terribly. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends.” Music-Industry Reaction The reaction to Houston’s death was swift, as stars expressed their grief on Twitter, in statements through their representatives and in person to press assembled at the 54th Grammy Awards on Sunday — just one day after her passing. The most immediate responses to her death hit Twitter early Saturday evening. Mariah Carey was among the first to issue a statement, tweeting, “My heartfelt condolences to Whitney’s family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth.” Rihanna and Nicki Minaj hit the social network to express their sadness soon after. Rihanna wrote, “No words! Just tears #DearWhitney.” Unable to hide her grief, Minaj was a bit more profane, tweeting, “Jesus Christ, not Whitney Houston. Greatest of all time,” along with a vintage photo of the late singer alongside Michael Jackson. “The loss of Whitney Houston is painful. I remember meeting Whitney for the first time when I was 15. She was the ultimate legend. The ultimate woman,” Beyonc

Whitney Houston’s Death: Details Emerge

TMZ added that she had reportedly been taking Xanax at the time. Houston had been spotted drinking the night before at a pre-Grammy party, and in combination with the prescription drug, it could have led to her falling asleep in the tub and drowning. According to TMZ , Bobbi got into an argument with police when she was denied access to see her mother’s body. Whitney Houston’s Death Leaves Bobby Brown ‘Distraught’

Houston’s ex-husband reportedly ‘in and out of crying fits’ after hearing about Houston’s death. By Tomika L. Anderson Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1999 Photo: Ron Galella/ Ron Galella Collection Bobby Brown is “distraught” and “in and out of crying fits” Saturday night (February 11) following the news that his ex-wife, Whitney Houston, was found dead . TMZ.com is reporting that Brown’s New Edition bandmates have been trying to console him as they prepare to perform at a concert in Mississippi. The R&B group — including Brown — is still expected to go onstage as planned this evening, despite Houston’s death at the age of 48. Whitney Houston was found dead inside a Beverly Hills hotel room following a 911 call. Beverly Hills Police Lieutenant Mark Rosen said there were “no obvious signs of criminal intent,” and the cause of death is being investigated. Brown and Whitney were married for 14 years. According to her official website, Houston sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos during the course of her storied career. Many celebrities, including Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and countless others , have taken to Twitter to express their shock at her death. The Reverend Al Sharpton also issued this statement: “I am stunned at the passing of Whitney Houston whom I have known since the late 1980’s. I have known her mother, the great gospel singer Cissy, and her aunt Dionne Warwick, down through the years, and the world is saddened by this great loss. Tomorrow Morning at Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles I will call for a national prayer for her family and the memory of Whitney Houston. The morning of the Grammys, the world should pause and pray for the memory of a gifted songbird.” Share your thoughts, memories and comments on our Facebook page.
