No Business As Usual: 15 People Are Arrested Demanding Georgia “Count Every Vote” In Gubernatorial Race

Photo By Raymond Boyd/Getty Images A State Senator Is Amongst Those Arrested On Tuesday, 15 people were arrested during a protest at Georgia’s Capitol building in Atlanta, according to NBC News . The protesters were demanding that the uncounted ballots from last week’s gubernatorial race be tallied. Democrat Stacey Abrams is going against Republican  Brian Kemp for governor and the race is still too close to call. So far, Kemp holds a lead over Abrams of less than 58,000 votes as of Tuesday. Demonstrators on Tuesday were chanting to “count every vote,” according to law enforcement. Georgia State Patrol told NBC News that the demonstrators were arrested for unlawfully disrupting “orderly conduct of official business” at the state capital building. Amongst the people arrested on Tuesday was Sen. Nikema Williams , who was additionally charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice. State patrol said that the protestors were taken to the Fulton County Jail. Williams spoke about her arrest to The Washington Post . She said she was apprehended “because I refused to leave the floor of this building where I’m a state senator.” She went on to say that the protest was peaceful. Protestors have set up a bail fund site for anyone who wants to donate to the cause. The race between Abrams and Kemp comes a week after Election Day as Georgia officials continue to tally uncounted ballots in the race. Earlier Tuesday, a federal judge ordered Georgia to guard against the improper rejection of provisional ballots and to hold off until Friday to confirm the state’s election results. Abrams is hoping to narrow Kemp’s lead so that a mandatory recount or a runoff can happen. State law requires a candidate has more than 50 percent of the vote in order to win outright. Kemp currently has 50.3 percent of the overall vote. Meanwhile, Abrams has not conceded the race, despite pressure from Kemp who has already declared victory.

A driver struck and injured three people on Wednesday during a march in St. Louis, Missouri to honor a transgender woman killed by the police, the New York Daily News reports. That’s when several of them jumped on the car, kicked it and struck it with a flagpole. Police arrested the driver one block away for felony fleeing, the Daily News reported. The marchers were honoring a trans woman who was a victim of constant homophobic harassment from a neighbor, Herring’s sister-in-law Crevonda Nance stated, according to the Huffington Post . Nance said the harassment reached a boiling point on Tuesday morning. Acting St. Louis Police Chief Larry O’Toole said Herring, 30, “severely cut” the neighbor and  “slashed” one of the responding officers on the arm with a kitchen knife. Both officers opened fire, killing Herring. O’Toole added that it’s unclear if the officers, who are now on administrative leave, tried to use nonlethal tools before firing their weapons. “Kiwi was harassed and executed, and it’s a horrible feeling,” Nance said, summing up the situation, according to The Post. David Banner Questions Motives of Artists Moving In On Occupy Wall Street

‘All of us have become so corporate that people don’t even feel like we’re a part of the people,’ rapper tells MTV News. By Steven Roberts David Banner at Occupy Wall Street Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — David Banner wasn’t the first artist to visit Occupy Wall Street , and he certainly won’t be the last. But Banner questioned the true intentions of many of the artists taking part in the demonstrations. When MTV News followed Banner down to Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park last Thursday, he said others probably questioned their intentions as well. “One of my only criticisms of hip-hop right now is that we all — like everybody — we can’t separate ourselves. All of us have become so corporate that people don’t even feel like we’re a part of the people, especially rappers and punk rockers,” Banner said. “People always felt like we were them. We were their voice. “You look at what happened with Troy [Davis] . We’re still at war, we’re in a recession, where’s that in the music? I don’t hear that in the music,” he continued. “This is the general feeling that people won’t really say, but I hear it.” Banner said that in the aftermath of 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, many rappers ran to the Gulf Coast to help, but only when cameras were there. Banner, who won a Visionary Award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators for his efforts during the hurricane, said that many of those rappers disappeared once the cameras did. “That’s why I applaud somebody like Big Boi , like he still holding Troy [Davis] down. The thing is, we have to understand that it’s not about what you do when the cameras are on, it’s what you do when the cameras are off.” Banner also addressed the merits of the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators. People have questioned whether or not the demonstration is representative of everyone it claims it is, because the demonstrators are predominantly white. But Banner said that if upper-middle-class white kids weren’t there, the police wouldn’t be as patient with the demonstration. “They’d just send the police out there, throw some tear gas, plant somebody in there. Call it gang violence, whatever, ya’ll know what they do in the ‘hood,” Banner said. “When their children are out there is when it becomes a movement. And I used to fight that and be mad at that, but what we got to understand is, in every movement, even in the ’60s, young, white, middle-class people were a major part of the movement. We have to stop separating ourselves.” Related Videos Inside Occupy Wall Street Related Photos The Occupation Party Shakes Up Times Square Related Artists David Banner

‘Dancing With The Stars’: Chynna Phillips Can’t Hold On

Wilson Phillips singer joined in the bottom by reality star Rob Kardashian. By Kelley L. Carter Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani Photo: ABC On Tuesday night’s (October 11) “Dancing With the Stars,” the final two couples came down to Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke and Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani. Although she was a high-scorer early in the competition, it was the Wilson Phillips singer’s name called to head home. During Monday’s performance show, Phillips blanked and forgot her routine, and the judges — although they were fans of her work in weeks prior — had to score her lower because of it. It was movie theme week, and Phillips and Dovolani did the tango to the “Mission Impossible” song. The judges noted the mistakes Phillips made in her routine, but they were merciful in their comments, saying what she did right was beautiful and that she didn’t lose her composure. “The challenge is for the professionals,” head judge Len Goodman said after the botched routine. “They’ve got to maintain the character of the dance but still show us a little bit of the flavor of the film. I thought you got it just about right. You lost it, you went wrong, you didn’t know where you were and you panicked. I’m sure had you nailed it, it was going to be great. Unfortunately, there were a lot of mistakes.” Once her name was called, Phillips didn’t appear too shocked, considering her mistakes. “I’m disappointed, I’m sad, but I have to take responsibility. I messed up,” she said. “I have an amazing partner. I love you, Tony. You’re amazing. He’s been there for me 100 percent the entire way. I’m really grateful to have been on the show. Thank you for everyone who voted for me.” Dovolani said he tried to save his partner once he noticed she was blanking. Still, he reiterated that he was proud of her. “The first thing that crossed my mind was to try to take care of her,” he said. “It’s a live show; things happen. She finished the routine.” Were you sad to see Chynna go? Let us know in the comments.

Occupy Wall Street: How Movement Stays Organized

Daniel Depaula explains protesters’ nightly General Assembly to MTV News. By Steven Roberts Facilitators speak at nightly General Assembly Photo: MTV News The demonstrators of Occupy Wall Street have made Lower Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park their home for the foreseeable future, and they haven’t ignored setting ground rules. Establishing an infrastructure in the park — now dubbed Liberty Park — was one of the demonstrators’ top priorities, ensuring everyone would have access to basic and essential resources. Many, if not all, of those decisions are reached at the General Assembly. The General Assembly is held every night at roughly 7 p.m., and everyone is invited to contribute. MTV News caught up with Daniel Depaula, one the facilitators of the GA, earlier this week. He explained how his group — the facilitation group — sets the evening’s agenda based on proposals and then presents them to the assembly. “We’re not really there to decide whether things are good or not,” Depaula explained. “We are simply there just to make sure that the people proposing are aware of how the process works. So they don’t run into any surprises once it goes to the assembly. “There are really no leaders or anyone with any power that anyone else doesn’t have,” he added. “Decisions are made autonomously by individuals or by groups, and larger issues are just brought to the assembly and discussed among everyone.” What’s even more interesting is how the proposals are pitched. The demonstrators at Occupy Wall Street aren’t allowed to have megaphones, because they would cause too much noise pollution in the area, so they are forced to shout their proposal to the crowd, which then echoes the proposal for those further away. The massive game of telephone allows everyone to be involved in the decisions, and they’re instructed at the beginning of the assembly how to respond (hands in the air if they agree, hands straight ahead of them if they’re unsure, and hands downwards if they disagree). On Monday night’s agenda: Whether to buy storage bins to maintain organization and cleanliness in the park. As the demonstration attracts more people, more waste is produced, so they want to keep things tidy. The group has a donation pool of money, but of course they have to vote first. Kanye West Joins Occupy Wall Street Protesters

Russell Simmons also takes part, calling the demonstrators ‘our future leaders.’ By Kara Warner Kanye West appears at the Occupy Wall Street demonstration on October 10 Photo: Timothy A. Clary / Getty Images With a group of protesters that has grown steadily in numbers, the Occupy Wall Street movement received a one-two celebrity punch Monday (October 10) in the form of supporters Kanye West and Russell Simmons. The hip-hop heavyweights caused a stir when they visited the demonstrators’ “base camp” at Zuccotti Park, where Simmons appeared on Al Sharpton’s radio show to speak in support of the group’s efforts. “People are here with an honest heart and honest intentions,” Simmons said, according to New York’s Daily News. “These young people are our future leaders. “I’m happy to pay a little more taxes if it means better education for our children,” he added. “I don’t pay enough taxes, and I know it.” Simmons and West are the latest celebs to jump onboard the Occupy Wall Street movement. When MTV News caught up with Talib Kweli last week, he spoke out about why he’s in full support of the protests. “There’s no other place in New York City to be,” Kweli told us. “People are taking their destiny in their own hands. This is one of the most American, if not the most American, things that I’ve ever seen. “When I see things like Occupy Wall Street, I just try to align myself with things that make sense,” he continued. “Shame on me if I know something and don’t spread it, you know? If I know, it becomes my responsibility to spread the information.” Occupy Wall Street, which has also spread to cities like Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles, marked its 24th day of protest Monday. Joliet Herald-News Ignores Story of Demonstrators With Nazi Signs From Local Congresswoman’s Campaign Office

Joliet, Illinois must be a community absolutely bursting with newsworthy events. Why? Because the Herald-News newspaper in that city was (conveniently) unable to cover a local news story that has become a sizzling hot topic in the blogosphere. All one has to do is enter the name of the Illinois 11th Congressional District Congresswoman, Debbie Halvorson, into Google Blog Search and you will get results chock full of a shocking incident a few days ago, including this video . The Frugal Café Blog Zone, which is but one of many sites covering this, explains : Would MSNBC or CNN have featured this shocking story if the vile protesters at the Nazi-themed protest were CONSERVATIVES or REPUBLICANS or if left-wing extremists had dressed up like Nazis and crashed a tea party posing as conservatives or Republicans? Why do you even ask? Of course they would. When interviewed in the video below, these anti-conservative protesters in Joliet, outside Chicago — proudly carrying Nazi-esque signs slamming GOP congressional opponent Adam Kinzinger and other well-known conservatives, like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin — denied several times being there in support of, or affiliated with, Democrat Rep. Debbie Halvorson. Congresswoman Halvorson is running against Kinzinger in the November election. … Much later, these bogus grassroots protesters were videotaped returning to the congresswoman’s campaign office in the dark of night. Obviously, they’re part of the liberal congresswoman’s camp. Unless Halvorson had NO IDEA that these left-wing extremist folks had her campaign office keys and gained access to her office. They look pretty darned cozy in there in the video with Julie Merz, Halvorson’s campaign manager. Many prominent blogs are now covering this shocking story of dirty campaign tactics including InstaPundit , Riehl World View , and The Other McCain . What will it take to get the Herald-News to cover this unfolding story in its own backyard of Joliet? A banner headline at the top of the Drudge Report linking to the video of the demonstrators with the Nazi themed signs returning home to the Debbie Halvorson campaign headquarters? Meanwhile a sampling of headlines in the current edition of the Herald-News that they found to be more important than this local political scandal that has heated up the blogosphere: Joliet couple power up for solar energy Yorkville swears in first deputy chiefs Plan set to spend proposed taxes USF to honor alumni at homecoming event
