No Business As Usual: 15 People Are Arrested Demanding Georgia “Count Every Vote” In Gubernatorial Race

Photo By Raymond Boyd/Getty Images A State Senator Is Amongst Those Arrested On Tuesday, 15 people were arrested during a protest at Georgia’s Capitol building in Atlanta, according to NBC News . The protesters were demanding that the uncounted ballots from last week’s gubernatorial race be tallied. Democrat Stacey Abrams is going against Republican  Brian Kemp for governor and the race is still too close to call. So far, Kemp holds a lead over Abrams of less than 58,000 votes as of Tuesday. Demonstrators on Tuesday were chanting to “count every vote,” according to law enforcement. Georgia State Patrol told NBC News that the demonstrators were arrested for unlawfully disrupting “orderly conduct of official business” at the state capital building. Amongst the people arrested on Tuesday was Sen. Nikema Williams , who was additionally charged with misdemeanor obstruction of justice. State patrol said that the protestors were taken to the Fulton County Jail. Williams spoke about her arrest to The Washington Post . She said she was apprehended “because I refused to leave the floor of this building where I’m a state senator.” She went on to say that the protest was peaceful. Protestors have set up a bail fund site for anyone who wants to donate to the cause. The race between Abrams and Kemp comes a week after Election Day as Georgia officials continue to tally uncounted ballots in the race. Earlier Tuesday, a federal judge ordered Georgia to guard against the improper rejection of provisional ballots and to hold off until Friday to confirm the state’s election results. Abrams is hoping to narrow Kemp’s lead so that a mandatory recount or a runoff can happen. State law requires a candidate has more than 50 percent of the vote in order to win outright. Kemp currently has 50.3 percent of the overall vote. Meanwhile, Abrams has not conceded the race, despite pressure from Kemp who has already declared victory.

Race Matters: Michigan State Senator Says Black Schools Could Be “Fixed” By Making Students White

State Sen. Knollenberg Makes Racist Comments About Black Students GOP State Senator Marty Knollenberg from Troy is responding to outrage over what he said during an education committee meeting in Lansing Thursday according to WXYZ reports: “You mentioned these school districts failing, and you mention economically disadvantaged and non-white population are the contributors to that. I know we can’t fix that. We can’t make an African-American white. That’s just, it is what it is,” Knollenberg said during the meeting recorded on camera by the state. He was talking about failing school districts all over the state. Natasha Baker, the state school reform officer and Karen McPhee, the senior advisor for education to Gov. Rick Snyder, were answering questions for the committee when the comment was made. Baker responded during the meeting, saying, “We didn’t get here because someone is poor. We didn’t get here because someone is black. We got here for a variety of reasons.” “I was disgusted to hear any human, especially an elected official who is responsible for creating policy, to talk that way,” said Rep Brian Banks, (D-Detroit) “It is clear you have some built in racism. It is clear you are out of touch with reality. As an elected official, as one of your colleagues, you owe us an apology.” “It was as racist a comment as anyone can make,” said David Decker, the President of the American Federation of Teachers in Michigan. “It is scary to think an elected official thinks that. Discuss.

Senator Arrested in Bribe Scheme; Malcolm Smith Allegedly Tried to Buy Spot on NYC Ballot

A high-ranking Democratic New York State senator was arrested today for trying to buy a place on the ticket in the next New York City mayoral race. Five other politicians, three Republicans and two Democrats, were also busted and charged with collectively accepting more than $100,000 in bribes. Authorities described the scheme – one of New York’s biggest in years – as an attempt to game the city ‘s first wide-open mayoral election in a decade. New York City will choose a new mayor in November, just before Michael Bloomberg, who took office in 2001, ends his third and final term as Hizzoner. The charges center on State Senator Malcolm Smith (D-Queens) who prosecutors said made payments to a city councilman to set up meetings. In those meetings, he allegedly tried to convince top New York Republicans to assist in getting him on the mayoral ballot in this November’s election. Smith and the councilman, Daniel Halloran, a Republican from Queens, were among the six politicians arrested in connection to the bribery scandal. Charges against them include bribery, extortion, and wire and mail fraud. “From time to time the question arises, how common is corruption in New York?” said Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara at a press conference. “Based on the cases we continue to bring, it seems downright pervasive.” Authorities arrested four other politicians: Queens County Republican Party Vice Chairman Vincent Tabone (R) Bronx County Republican Party Chairman Joseph Savino (R) Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin (D) Spring Valley Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret (D) Smith’s lawyer, Gerald Shargel, said only that “Malcolm Smith is a dedicated public servant who has served  his constituents in an exemplary fashion.” Representatives of the other five officials all either declined to comment or did not respond to phone calls on Tuesday morning after their arrests.
