A School District In Pennsylvania Turns Down Offer From Local Businessman To Pay Off School Lunch Debts

Source: Mint Images / Getty The efforts of a Pennsylvania businessman were denied after he reportedly offered to pay off $22,467 of a school district’s lunch debt in order to thwart the reported plans of administrators who threatened to place students in foster care over the unpaid debts. Two weeks ago, a widely circulated letter sent to parents from the Wyoming Valley West school district disturbingly laid out a plan of action for parents with unpaid lunch debts. Michael stated that he received a firm “no” from the school’s school board president Joseph Mazur. “On Monday, we talked to School Board President Joseph Mazur to determine the best way to transfer the funds in order to wipe the slate clean and restore dignity to the 1,000 families who received these threatening letters,” Carmichael wrote. Let me be clear: we offered over $22,000 with no strings attached. And he said ‘No,’” Carmichael continued. “Mr. Mazur, I am offering to pay this debt in full. By saying no, you are not just shaming families who elected you, but you are placing this burden on WVW taxpayers, and that is completely unfair,” he added. Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey called the school district’s actions “callous” on Twitter and urged administrators to cease the threats of foster care. Moving forward, the School District has an obligation to find an appropriate way to collect these funds, instead of using threats — Senator Bob Casey (@SenBobCasey) July 19, 2019 The situation is shockingly similar to a story we reported on in May,  where a school in Rhode Island served peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to students with unpaid balances  and denied the efforts of a local businesswoman who wanted to help pay off a fraction of the debt. Low-income students have again become collateral in the fight for who gets to eat and who is objectified for doing so. In the Wyoming Valley West School District, 64% of the students live below the poverty line, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Matt Roloff: Get Me the Heck Off This Farm!

Matt Roloff clearly cannot hold back any longer. He tried for awhile, you could really tell he did. Even after being trashed as a bully and as a cheater by his ex-wife, the Little People, Big World star said almost nothing. He remained mostly quiet in the wake of Amy Roloff writing some rather cruel things about him in his memoir, but Matt has now made it evident that he’s had enough. No, he hasn’t lashed out at Amy personally or anything like that. But he has displayed an angry side when faced with what he believes to be a false and duplicitious narrative. And it all circles back to this past season of the aforementioned TLC series. For many weeks on Little People, Big World, Matt and Amy clashed over the future of the farm . It certainly appeared as if Matt was pressuring his ex to sell her stake in the property so that he could do the same… they could walk away from the business… and each move on with their lives. On the finale, Amy finally agreed to such a deal. But she did so with reluctance. “This process has not been easy for me,” the 54-year-old reality star explained on the show, before adding: “I will be glad when it’s completely done and we part ways.” As a result of how this debate was depicted on television, most viewers assumed Matt basically forced Amy’s hand and was anxious to take over the entire farm by himself. However, he’s made it clear now that this was anything but the case. “U pushed ur x wife out of the farm! Not sure if I cane ver respect that in u,” wrote an Instagram user to Matt late last week, prompting him to fire back in direct fashion: “That’s the biggest crock of BS I’ve ever heard… I would love Amy to buy her side of the farm and let me move to [Arizona] full time.” Matt then took a rather pointed shot at the mother of his four kids, adding: “She’s scared  to death of the world and attention it would take.” Matt and his girlfriend, Caryn Chandler, purchased a home in Arizona last year. But it was assumed at the time that this would simply be a vacation house; it now sounds, though, as if Matt’s ideal scenario would entail him moving away from Oregon for good. This is the first time he’s ever made such an admission. Back in June, meanwhile, Matt did his best to clarify what has been going on with the family farm . “Sometimes people get so far astray of the truth we have to write direct messages to correct all the assumptions,” he wrote online, adding in far more detail: “I don’t think people understand the buyout option… let me explain.. despite what you see on TV … I have chosen to buy (and Amy has chosen to sell) me only one side of the far… “Not the original farmstead … not the side with the pumpkin patch or her house.. for now she is only selling me her partial share of ownership in the side (DW) that I live on… “She will remain in her house (and on the farm) and 1/2 owner of our original farm until she decides to leave. “At that time we will jointly work to sell the side she lives on together. This may happen in the future but it’s not happening yet!” So, in the end, the whole farm-selling thing doesn’t sound like a big deal at all. It has no impact on the family business or anything at the moment. Except… it’s clear there’s potential now for it to be a huge deal. Matt wants to live the entire thing behind and resettle down south. Will Little People, Big World even exist if/when this happens? Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun Feud: It’s Getting Uglier & Kamala Harris Is Involved Now!

In case you somehow haven’t heard, the Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun feud has been going strong for several weeks now. It all started when Braun purchased Big Machine Label Group, a deal that also gave him the master recordings to Taylor’s first seven albums. The beef has left celebs and industry insiders deeply divided, with numerous A-listers and prominent figures in the music biz loudly declaring their support for either side. Yes, Scooter may not be as famous as Taylor, but he’s just as rich, and arguably even more well-connected. Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Cara Delevingne and countless others have already been pulled into the fray. And now, a front-running Democratic presidential candidate has essentially been forced to pick a side. The very wealthy often host fundraisers for candidates they support — not only is it the ultimate status symbol (“Come meet the future president at my house!”), it also helps to curry favor with powerful politicians who might soon become even more powerful. Scooter hosted one for Senator Kamala Harris last week, and many of Taylor’s most ardent fans took to social media to express their displeasure with the presidential candidate. And it’s resulted in the worst Kamala Harris/music-related scandal since the California senator claimed she listened to Biggie and Tupac in college, even though the rappers would’ve been in middle school when she graduated.’ “I was SO excited for you as a democratic candidate, but if you so choose to go to an event held by @scooterbraun, a man whose arrogance mirrors our president’s, I can no longer hold onto my excitement and faith for you as a presidential candidate,” one Swiftie tweeted. “If @KamalaHarris thinks this will get her votes she is delusional and @scooterbraun is a thief who uses these women to advance his bank account…” another remarked. A user named @sandiegoleah even started a hashtag for the movement, tweeting: “@KamalaHarris please don’t do a fundraiser with @scooterbraun you will lose a lot of votes to @ewarren I want to support you but cannot if you associate with a bully and misogynist #IStandWithTaylor”. Early reports from Page Six indicated that Taylor herself commented on the situation, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. The question now, of course, is — how will this affect Harris’ chances of securing the Democratic nomination. And the answer is, almost certainly not at all. We know there are those who believe Taylor could have prevented a Trump presidency simply by endorsing Hillary, but that’s obviously not true. If anything, the 2016 Election taught us the same lesson as the Taylor vs. Scooter feud — extremely rich white dudes can pretty much do whatever they want.

One of the biggest beneficiaries of that debate is Senator Kamala Harris who got a lot of air-time on cable news networks after she took a bite out of Joe Biden and his record on busing Black students to predominantly white schools. The race to the White House will be tense and likely very close, every little gain in the poll matters. Thoughts on Kamala Harris and her campaign up to this point?

Sunny Hostin: Crazy Bethenny Frankel YELLED at My Young Child!

The Real Housewives of New York City fans recoiled in horror as Bethenny Frankel lashed out at Luann de Lesseps . It was ugly. The cohosts of The View responded to the incident, and Sunny had her own anecdote to share about the Skinnygirl founder. Sunny claims that she met Bethenny just once — when Bethenny yelled at Sunny's 7-year-old child. Just a quick recap, tragically not told in Whoopi Goldberg's impression of a Valley Girl voice. Bethenny Frankel was there for Luann after her arrest and the beginning of her sobriety journey. She clearly feltt hat Luann was too self-absorbed to return the favor after the tragic death of Dennis Shields . In a scene that brought multiple Housewives to tears, she unloaded on Luann without remorse. Clearly, Bethenny was having an on-screen breakdown in grief. But it remains a topic of discussion. So what does this have to do with The View cohost Sunny Hostin? Well, the women offered up their reactions to Bethenny's outburst, with Meghan McCain providing nuanced context. (Imagine if she could do that with politics! Wouldn't that be something?) Meghan makes it very clear that she feels a lot of sympathy for Bethenny at this moment. But not everyone feels the same way. “I don't know Bethenny,” Sunny mentions. “But I've seen her behave that way on the beach yelling at my child.” This gets everyone's attention. Joy Behar mentions that she would like to hear about Sunny's experience. (While Whoopi implies that she knows this story already) “I don't know,” Sunny says. “They're telling me not to talk about it in my ear.” “I'm just saying,” Sunny continues. “I've seen that kind of behavior when Bethenny yelled at my child on the beach.” She pauses for dramatic effect while the audience responds, and then shares her story. “It was in the middle of the day,” she recalls. “And my child was about 7, playing with other children at about 2 o’clock in the afternoon.” Speaking of Bethenny, Sunny recounts: “and she said that her child was napping inside with the window open.” “And,” Sunny claims, Bethenny insisted “that our children were being too loud on the beach.” “[She] yelled at my child,” Sunny accuses. “And,” she adds. “I went out there and stood in front of my child.” “And I yelled at her,” Sunny reveals. “And told her adults speak to adults,” “And she knows I’m telling the truth,” Sunny concludes. It is very clear that this one encounter left a permanent bad taste in Sunny's mouth when it comes to the Skinnygirl founder. Bethenny isn't without her defenders on the show, as the Princess of Arizona spoke out on her behalf. “[Frankel] sent me a very nice note after my dad died,” Meghan says. Meghan's father is the late Senator John McCain, a fact that she has mentioned a time or two. “And I like her,” Meghan notes. “And I wasn’t there on that beach in that scenario. I don’t have kids, as everyone knows.” Sunny points out: “I didn’t get a nice note.” Longtime fans of The View may recall that Sunny shared this anecdote back in 2016. At the time, she provided context, saying that she and Bethenny had been renting neighboring houses in the Hamptons. “She was very gracious later,” Sunny admitted in 2016. She added that Bethenny had “sent me some of the Skinnygirl margarita stuff later.” “Maybe she’s much nicer now,” Sunny acknowledged. “But she was pretty ugly to all of us.” It seems that Bethenny's outburst brought back ugly memories for Sunny. Was Sunny being unfair? A friend of Bethenny's tells Us Weekly that it's disappointing to see her taking shots at the reality star. According to the unnamed friend, it is a “shame Sunny continues to speak negatively about Bethenny.” “They don’t even know each other,” the friend points out. “She even attacked Bethenny’s relief efforts last year.” “Not sure why she continues to be fixated on her,” the friend lamented. “And create unnecessary drama.” Sometimes, it's best to let go of grudges. That said … you don't yell at somebody else's kids. And you don't get mad at children playing on a beach.

Debate Rages Over Whether Black Women Support Bernie Sanders

Source: Pacific Press / Getty T he lingering question of how much support Bernie Sanders has from Black women voters was exacerbated last week during his appearance at the She the People Presidential Forum in Houston last week. That debate continued in a major way Sunday when one of Sanders’ top campaign staffers, a Black woman, defended the Vermont senator’s appeal to the coveted demographic. But that appeal was uncertain after Sanders, one of eight Democratic White House hopefuls at the event billed as “the first-ever Presidential candidate forum focused on women of color,” was asked about his plan to stem the rise of white nationalism. The Vermont senator’s familiar refrain that he once marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. elicited groans, jeers and boos, suggesting the audience wanted to hear new talking points instead of those from the 2016 election. Former Ohio Sen. Nina Turner , who is Sander’s campaign co-chair, appeared on the AM Joy show on MSNBC Sunday morning and cited statistics to show the senator was support from the vital voting bloc of Black women. . @ninaturner : The @MorningConsult poll shows very clearly that almost half of #BernieSanders ' supporters are of color. He's polling over 50% with women in general. So yes the senator does have a larger vision… #AMJoy pic.twitter.com/dBXMKWslDJ — AM Joy w/Joy Reid (@amjoyshow) April 28, 2019 But Joy Reid , host of the show, and Dr. Jason Johnson , another panelist, begged to differ and said Sanders squandered the perfect opportunity for him to bolster his support from Black women voters. They both said Sanders failed to answer the question and instead relied on tired talking points that don’t move the dial on the conversation about white nationalism in America. . @DrJasonJohnson on #ShethePeople : This was Sanders' audience to lose… He got the largest number of cheers when he walked on stage & blew it… He was asked about what he would do about white nationalism… He failed to answer the actual question he was addressed with. #AMJoy pic.twitter.com/z46dT0lfFK — AM Joy w/Joy Reid (@amjoyshow) April 28, 2019 Watch the full exchange below. Turner previously blasted the Black women in the audience who booed, saying at a rally the day after the event that the jeers were disrespectful. “In what world when you are sitting on the stage telling folks about your history, and you mention the fact that you were on the March on Washington with Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Fort Worth, in what world do people boo that?” she asked the crowd. “That happened to Senator Sanders yesterday, and I’m calling it out. In what world? You don’t boo folks for that. And I don’t care if it was somebody who I didn’t care about their policies, if they stood up with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other heroes and sheroes, we need to shout that out.” Bernie Adviser Nina Turner Blasts Audience From Black Women's Forum for Booing Senator's MLK Comments https://t.co/WAKJrDtx0V pic.twitter.com/x5GgU8Cql1 — Tormund XtopHodor, First of His Name (@tommyxtopher) April 25, 2019 That commentary prompted a response from LaTosha Brown , the co-founder of the elections advocacy group Black Votes Matter. She said that the last thing anyone should be doing was blaming Black women voters. I was disappointed at Bernie’s presentation at #SheThePeople but NOW I’m really getting pissed! Giving an uninspiring talk is one thing but blaming Black women for Sanders’ lack of preparedness, aloofness and poor performance is unacceptable. https://t.co/4yLWXroXAV — LaTosha Brown (@MsLaToshaBrown) April 27, 2019 That wasn’t the first time that Sanders has ducked questions about his plans for Black America should he be elected president. Back in February, Sanders was in the middle of a CNN town hall event when a Black woman in the audience asked him about his stance on reparations . But the 77-year-old, who has been a bit iffy (some might say he’s flip-flopped) on the topic, further blurred the lines when he ended his very noncommittal answer by stating, “It depends on what the word means,” he said. His multitude of past racial blunders — remember when he said that white people who didn’t vote for Stacey Abrams “are not necessarily racist” because they felt “uncomfortable” voting for a Black candidate? — have also been far from a good look for Sanders. Nevertheless, Sanders was still in second place in the most recent Democratic presidential nomination poll published by Real Clear Politics. Are We Surprised? Fox News Host Laughs As Guest Suggests Canadians Should Get Reparations Before African Americans

Source: Rich Polk / Getty Fox News Host Laughs With Guest About Slavery Comments Fox News being insensitive about racism? Could’ve seen that one coming. The latest controversy from the network comes following a guest who appeared on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show and said African Americans “need to move on” from slavery because it was abolished “a century-and-a-half ago”. Mark Steyn is a cultural commentator and made these comments on Thursday, during a segment discussing 2020 presidential candidates who are in favor of some sort of reparations for African Americans. During his rant on the topic, Steyn said: “Slavery was abolished a century and a half ago, nobody alive today has a grandparent who was a slave, and in that sense I think you reach a point where, you know, you need to move on. “The reparations thing, eventually, as the decades go by, becomes ridiculous,” he continued. Not stopping there, Steyn then went on to compare the experience of Black people in America to Canadians like himself–who he claimed also deserve reparations on the basis that if “[America] hadn’t had the revolution, the whole continent would now be Canada”. As Steyn spoke, comparing the hardships faced by African Americans to Canadians, the host responded by interjecting a “yeah” before laughing along with the guest’s comments. The conversation then went on to specifically address 2020 contender Senator Kamala Harris, who supports the idea of reparations for African Americans. The segment ended with Steyn contending that Harris’s “own experience is entirely apart from the African-American slave experience,” and that she is getting involved in “identity politics,” which Carlson quickly agreed with. Unsurprisingly, once the clip of this conversation surfaced online, it was met with tons of backlash on social media. Two white privileged men discuss reparations. Was this 1867? — Jennifer Hill (@sublimejah) February 22, 2019 Man, that bothers me! Completely ignores the fact that for some people, this is a part of their family history. Not to mention the civil rights movements of the 60s, which wasn't long ago. People grandparents lived it. — Trinity the Cat (@Trinitythecat) February 22, 2019 Couldn't Tucker just wear his hood on air? We wouldn't have to see his “I'm listening face” and it would keep hair and makeup from having to touch him. — Smoking Duck (@ScottyBeHotty) February 22, 2019 This latest controversy from the Fox News host comes after previous comments he’d made that cost him a significant portion of his advertisers. In December, Carlson–who is friends with Donald Trump–said that  immigration makes America “dirtier” . The comment was rightfully met with widespread backlash and resulted in more than 20 sponsors pulling their advertisements from the primetime show.
