FAB FINDS: Nicki Minaj’s Former MUA Shares The Best Red Lipsticks For Black Queens This Holiday Season

Source: Ahamefula Izuike / EyeEm / Getty Red lips have always been a symbol of glamor. The ivory skin of old Hollywood’s elite seem to come to mind when accompanying the red lip as it’s most prized subject throughout history. Perhaps this is why women of color are shy to dawn the most infamous shade of lipstick? In fact, too often women of color have been told that red doesn’t suite them. I was once interviewed as a celebrity makeup artist by one of New York City’s leading radio personalities who blatantly told me on-air that dark skinned women shouldn’t wear red lipstick . Well. In this 21 st century, and on Al Gore’s internet, I’m here to remind you that nothing has ever been more un-freaking-true. The holidays are upon us and although you damn sure don’t need any reason at all to wear a red lip, I know so many of you are easing your way into this thing with caution and looking for the perfect excuse. Let’s explore some of my go-to reds for every hue of melanated women.

FAB FINDS: Discover This Affordable Beauty Hack For Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes At Under $1.00

Go here to see the original:

Source: Peopleimages / Getty As a celebrity makeup artist, I’ve been asked quite often how frequently one should wash their personal makeup brushes. My response is always the same: Wash your brushes as frequently as you wash your pillow cases . However, how to wash them however, wasn’t always an easy reply. In the beginning, I remember attempting to wash my brushes with the same bar of soap that I used to wash my body. For me, it’s Dove ($6.19, target.com ). Since the product worked so well on my skin and kept me clean, surely it would break down the build-up on my brushes. Right? I tried this a couple times and found myself in the bathroom for far too long. Rinse after rinse it took too many tries to get my dingy brushes like new again. After a couple of tries, I realized that I was just going to have to use something stronger. The next best thing would be dish soap. That worked like a charm and got my dirty white brushes white again, but then I noticed them slowly loosing bristles over time. It was obvious to me that the dish soap was drying out the hair of my brushes. I’d spent a lot of money on those suckers and needed them to hold up! Not to mention, my Beauty Blender sponges ($20.00, macys.com ) that were $20 a pop STILL wouldn’t get cleaned by anything other than the official soap that the company makes. Those bars of soap ($16.00, ulta.com ) cleaned my brushes and blenders marvelously but they were not affordable, especially for how fast I was moving through the product. Thus, I like many other girls just gave up washing my brushes as often as I should. Oh come on! Don’t act like you haven’t gone a month or longer without washing your brushes! It’s easy to do when you realize how time consuming it can be and how costly it is to purchase soaps that are meant to wash the hairs of your brushes. Once I became a working makeup artist I gathered up a collection of brushes meant only for clients and realized that I’d have to come up with a solution for cleaning my brushes. I’d be using them on multiple faces and needed them to be clean for each use for sanitary purposes. After some trial and error I narrowed it down to baby shampoo ($4.99, target.com ) for my brushes and the official Beauty Blender bar of soap ($16.00, ulta.com ) for my Beauty Blender ($20.00, macys.com ). The baby soap was strong enough to get my brushes clean but not too strong that it would dry them out. Still, it took a few washings before I could get them to be REALLY clean. One day I was traveling with a client. I had been working with this particular celebrity for some time and I was in and out of hotels with her. I realized after a long day on set that I’d run out of my bar of soap to wash my Beauty Blenders. It was late and Sephora wasn’t open so I used my only option…the bar of soap provided by the hotel. Within seconds of working up a good lather I realized that this bar of soap was cleaning the hell outta that sponge better than the official bar of soap! I grabbed a white bristled brush and tried using the soap on it. In seconds the brush was back to white! SECONDS! With my baby shampoo it took a few washings! The next morning I approached a maintenance worker and asked for more soap for my room. She gave me one bar. “Do you think you could spare any more of them?”. By the end of my stay I’d racked up at least 10 bars. It wasn’t long before I realized that it wasn’t just that hotel’s soap that cleaned my brushes and sponges. It was ALL hotel soap. So why would hotel soap work but not my Dove soap?! Simply put, because its cheap. Cheap soap cleans brushes and sponges best. I put this theory to the test by going to the drug store and purchasing the least expensive bar of soap they offered: Dial soap at .99 cents a bar. Now, all of these years later, that is my go-to product to clean my brushes and my sponges. The best part? Dial soap ($1.99, target.com ) is antibacterial too. WIN WIN! The only down side is that it is somewhat drying. I counteract this conditioning my real hair brushes every now and again. It’s real hair so you can condition it! Pamper your brushes from time to time so they can keep pampering you! Source: Tara Ziemba / Getty In the same way rumors have persisted about a physical altercation between singers Monica and Brandy, there was another one between Immature singer Romeo and Brandy herself. Want Exclusives First? Click Here To Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Romeo, born Jerome Jones, was distinguished from the rest of his group members because he wore a signature eye patch. For years, the story was that Romeo wore the patch after he and Brandy got into a fight with one another. But during a recent sit down with Nick Cannon, Jones told the real story. Nick Cannon: Obviously everybody knows you was always rocking the eye patch. There was the rumor that Brandy did that is that true? Jerome Jones: Yeah that’s a true story. Nick : Really? Jerome : Yeah, her and Half Pint had got into it. She had a book in her hand, just tossed it back, not thinking anyone or I was that close. Cut my retina, detached it. And the lens to the eye had fell out and Brandon Adams caught it. He was there with us. So, he’s standing there holding my lens. He’s not knowing what’s going on. Marc come in and we were trying to hide it. Marques : I was like ‘What’s going on?’ Rome is on the bed. I’m like what’s going on? Rome is like, ‘Nothing. Nothing.’ Brandy’s like, ‘He don’t want to get me in trouble. Nothing, nothing.’ I immediately went and got Chris. ‘Something happened to Rome.’ Told Chris is was an accident and we took Rome to the hospital. Jones addressed his eye condition in a song from his solo career, “Look Down On Me” from his album Food For Thought. He wrote, “I remember when Brandy Norwood hit me in my eye. I had a detached retina (and) my lens came out, I had to have three eye surgeries. And she thought we’d never be cool again. But I put that on my life, I love her to death. If she hear me talking, I know she can hear the honesty in my voice and my sincerity.” Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). HAUTE OR NAUGHT: The Sea Glass Nails Trend Is Here

Excerpt from:

When it comes to flaunting a stylish manicure set, you’ve probably checked your social media feed over and over for inspiration. While glitter accent nails, coffin shaped nails and geometric nail art is all on-trend you may be looking for a design that takes your nail game to the next level–and we found one. Enter: Sea glass nails. Sea glass nails was born from the jelly nail trend that are basically see-through acrylic nails. However, with sea glass nails, this look consists of a matte finish and a sea green color that works to complement the winter season perfectly. View this post on Instagram Sea glass manis because it's cold and we miss the beach : @jessicawashick A post shared by POPSUGAR Beauty (@popsugarbeauty) on Oct 24, 2019 at 7:11am PDT To get the clear opacity in your nails, you’ll combine your colored nail polish with a clear top coat to give it a more viscous finish, nail technician Jessica Washick tells Refinery29 . You’ll paint the polish mixture onto your nails and let it dry–that’s your jelly manicure base– then you apply the clear top coat on its won, followed by a matte top coat. The two top coats layered over the jelly base diffuses the color, picks up the white undertones, and makes the finish extra frosty.” While this nail trend seems to be perfect for those who like to experiment with color, we have to admit that the color is really pretty to rock. A nice change of pace for the typical cool-toned nail hues, this green shade may have longevity in the nail game. What say you? Are you loving this new sea green nail trend? Halloween Appropriation: Is Our Diction More Damaging Than The Costumes Themselves?

Source: SOPA Images / Getty Halloween can be a fantastic time for those that celebrate it. While it’s geared towards children, adults fall into the fun as well ! Costumes are sold online, in stores, in fact, there are even pop up Halloween stores specifically selling items for this one evening. While it can be fun to dress up as your favorite celebrity, movie character, childhood character, meme, and more and there are so many creative ways to construct a costume (or just buy one), you can take the fantasy too far. Halloween has become associated with cultural appropriation because people may dress up in costumes, not knowing the history behind it. Worst of all, there seems to always be a case(s) of Blackface every year, which naturally let’s me know that Halloween is also a time that some choose to offend. In the age of Google, it’s hard for me to accept that someone just didn’t “know”. Doing the research on your costume and spending some time thinking about why you want to have this costume should lead you to know whether it’s a smart idea or not. People choose ignorance. Source: SOPA Images / Getty However, when will we acknowledge that our diction is more damaging than the costumes themselves? It comes out in marginalized communities like minorities and the obese . Growing up, I recall Black people saying, they were going to be the “ Black version of Ariel ” or “the Black Belle.” Yes, we have evolved and have our own Black princesses (shout out to Tiana), it still seems like a limitation for when we dress up for Halloween. We should just be able to imagine those characters in our own image, because for so long, we were ignored on the screen. Also, you can recreate a character without trying to recreate a race; you don’t see Black people powdering their faces, yet the need to create inclusion is heard clearly through the description. We aren’t even having enough discussions around size in animation or representation in a positive light for the young and old alike. Jessica Rabbit was the “thickest” the community has gotten. We haven’t advanced far enough in our fight in diversity to where Disney has given us a voluptuous Princess, with roll and folds in all her glory. Thank goodness we have been graced with a real life BAP like Lizzo . Each year, plus size women are forced to create representation for themselves, we dress up as Tinkerbell’s and Mariah Carey ‘s, Beyoncé ‘s, Michelle Obama ‘s, and Oprah ‘s showcasing the power of plus size women within our superstars. As we strive to be a more culturally aware society, Greek Goddesses become Goddesses, we dress up as skeletons and not Day of the Dead, and we don’t wear makeup from specific African origins in which we don’t identify. It’s not sensitive, it’s respectful and inclusive. Sometimes it’s not what we see and more so what we imply and our verbiage. By thinking more about what we say, how we say it, and how we describe our costumes, can speak volumes to communities that are normally affected by the thoughtlessness within the Halloween holiday. HELLO WORLD: Enhance Your Girls Trip To Bermuda With These 10 Black Owned Businesses

Originally posted here:

Earlier this year, New York City-based style and travel influencer Monroe Steele posted that she had teamed up with Kristin White , the Mayor of Black Bermuda (joking, but not really), to host a trip to Bermuda in the Fall. I decided to roll solo, but ended up meeting some other dope female solo travelers and Bermudian locals who fell nothing short of #BlackGirlMagic. Let’s start from the beginning.  Monroe has been to Bermuda a couple of times and describes it as one of her favorite places in the world. Kristin White is a Bermuda native and renaissance woman who loves to tell stories about people from her island, especially when it comes to Black entrepreneurs, especially women. Kristin is a writer, talk show host, owns a gift shop called Long Story Short , and she hosts history tours. She can count Yara Shahidi ’s family among her happy tour customers. However, Kristin decided to take the concept of her tours to a higher level.  Source: Kendall Trott / Kendall Trott After learning that the Bermuda Board of Tourism wanted to attract more African American visitors, which currently stands at 4% , Kristin decided to host a full trip to her island to provide a deeper look into what it has to offer. When most people think of Bermuda, they think of rich White travelers and business people who come to play. While all of the above is true, Kristin also wants travelers to explore the island’s rich African diasporic heritage, as well as its bustling population of Black creatives who are turning their passions into profit and achieving milestones in Black History. So, she slid into Monroe’s DM’s to see if she would be interested in tapping into her follower base to host a group of stylish women on the island and “Untold Stories” was born. Bermuda is a 90 minute flight from JFK. It’s chill, the beaches aren’t overcrowded, and it’s a great place to experience luxury that rivals that of a weekend in the Hamptons.  Myself plus two other young stylish Black women joined the fun as we explored Bermuda over a four day weekend. We stayed at the luxurious Hamilton Princess Bermuda and traipsed around the island visiting modern museums, tasting epic food, getting history lessons, and visiting chic Black owned boutiques. Here’s a rundown of places you’ll want to visit when you touch down in Bermuda.  View this post on Instagram No caption necessary. . : @iamkendaltrott . #visitbermuda #blackgirlstravel A post shared by Starr R. Are Hair Supplements Needed For Hair Growth?

Read the original post:

Source: eyenigelen / Getty When it comes to promoting healthy hair, there are so many myths and theories about growing textured hair . Some hair mavens will say that time, patience and a solid hair regimen is all you need, while others would say that a healthy diet is the way to go. While there are plenty of ways to grow your hair out, there is one option that continues to be a hot topic: hair supplements. And we’ve seen them all! From well known hair brands like The Mane Choice and Hairfinity creating their own hair vitamins, it leaves us wondering if these hair supplements actually work? As someone who uses hair vitamins regularly, I would have to say that they do work, but all brands are not created equal. The truth is, hair supplements comes in handy for anyone looking to grow their hair, it’s all about finding the right brand for you. But like most hair mavens and nutritionists believe, these supplements can help you achieve long tresses , but only in conjunction with a healthy diet. Many hair supplements contain a variety of vitamins and minerals that nourish your body, specifically your hair cells. “What we eat influences our hair in many ways,” nutrition health coach Maria Marlowe tells Well + Good . “Lacking certain nutrients can slow hair growth, leave it weak and dull, and contribute to both dandruff and hair loss .” Using hair supplements is a personal choice, but we recommend consulting with your doctor before taking any vitamins. There is always a risk with taking any vitamins so you want to make sue that everything checks out.
