As sustainability becomes more of a hot topic and people are trying to make choices better for the environment, reducing (or completely stopping) your fast fashion shopping, is at the top of the list. Unfortunately, sustainable shopping is honestly, more expensive upfront (and less expensive in the long run). I explain to people that there is truly nothing that costs $5.00. If an item is cheap, someone is paying for it. It may be the individual who made it (lack of fair wages or working conditions) or it may be in the form of the fabric choice (polyester is one of the worst fabrics for the environment as they are made from petrochemicals and non-biodegradable). If you’re on a budget or of lower socio-economic status, you may think that sustainable shopping is not for you. This is not true! There are many options to help you stay on trend and think first about the environment. Keep reading for tips.
Source: FG Trade / Getty Cincinnati City Councilman Chris Seelbach wants to propose a law that would prevent discrimination against natural hair and hairstyles in relation to race. The Councilman told the Cincinnati Enquirer, “People of color have been forced to regard natural and popular hairstyles – such as bantu knots , box braids , cornrows, dreadlocks , or Afros – as liabilities in the workplace, housing and public accommodations.” The law would allow the city to investigate complaints of discrimination against natural hair and hairstyles. If discrimination is found, there is a fine of up to $1000.00 (a $100.00 per day) until the discriminatory practice is corrected. There will be a public discussion on the proposal scheduled for Tuesday with the City Council’s Arts, Youth & Inclusion Committee. The council will vote on a decision on Wednesday. Earlier this year, California passed The Crown Act , a law preventing discrimination for natural hair. NYC released an anti-hair discrimination guideline for people of color and then banned discrimination against natural hair and hairstyles. It’s great to see that states and cities are standing up to protect people of color and allow them the freedom to wear their hairstyles in the manner they choose. Historically, Black people have been inhibited from wearing the hairstyle of their choice in public and live in the fear of being turned down from a job for rocking their natural tresses. We are just moving towards a time where all natural hair textures, particularly Type 4 are being catered to in society and seen more in ads. It’s time for workplaces to follow suit. Beauties, what do you think? Should more states be pushing to ban natural hair discrimination? Why or why not? Sound off in the comment section! Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty The 90’s produced an era of African American brands that revolutionized fashion and left a long lasting affect on Black culture . From Baby Phat to Karl Kani, creative expression through fashion was widely practiced and supported. Among the many brands to leave a dent in Black culture was Cross Colours. Not only was their bright color-blocking aesthetic fueled with political messaging, it was also everything we didn’t know we needed at the time. Carl Jones and TJ Walker founded Cross Colours back in 1989. Their clothing line was a testament to the carefree feeling of the 90’s. Back then, women wore baggy clothes like the men so in some ways, they presented as gender neutral brand. It was a rebellious, fun, colorful way to express yourself and represent the culture, hence their tag line “Clothing without Prejudice”. Cross Colours aimed to have an open dialog on police brutality, drugs, and the educational gap by projecting the positive attributes of black and urban culture. https://www.instagram.com/p/B29oJ_ngIS7/?igshid=15ve8ud4gynva https://www.instagram.com/p/B2otX9ego8S/?igshid=w726t7jcv9ap With such a rich history contributed to the urban community, it is great to see that Cross Colours now has an exhibition at The California African American Museum called, “Cross Colours: Black Fashion in the 20th Century.” The exhibit shows the history of brand from it’s birth in 1989 to current day trends. In an interview with Vogue , Co-curator Tyree Boyd-Pates says the exhibition, “is organized as a visual roadmap of the African America social movements that inspired the brand, both thematically and historically.” He adds, “in particular, it shows how Cross Colours modeled Black pride, community responsibility, and solidarity in the early 1990s.” The messaging of the brand is something that rings very true today. “I can’t believe that the slogan we printed on our T-shirts, ‘Clothing Without Prejudice,’ is something that still needs to be said today,” Jones says. “That was in the ’90s, and I think it’s as relevant today as it was then, maybe even more so.” This exhibition couldn’t have come at a better time. It is a great way of showcasing how fashion can make a statement beyond the clothes you wear. There is a lack of Black designers producing affordable, urban street wear like there was in the 90’s. This exhibition in some ways pays homage to the innovators who used fabric as a way to unite an entire community of people. Personally speaking, I’m jealous of the L.A. residents who get to witness the history of Cross Colors at the California African American Museum. From now until March 1, 2020, you can experience the Black Fashion in the 20th Century exhibit. View this post on Instagram S U N D A E S E R M O N Nothing better than a Sunday in Harlem. : @keyairakelly A post shared by Nashipae Wanjira | Danielle J. (@theislandiva) on Aug 11, 2019 at 2:45pm PDT Wash and go’s have been my go-to for the summer. It allows me to bring moisture to my hair and in this hot weather, the last thing I want to do is weigh it down with a wig or weave. Many Type 4 women stray away from wash and go’s because of lack of curl definition and most importantly, shrinkage. Felicia Leatherwood stopped by Hello Beautiful to share details on how to achieve a wash and go that will turn heads! First off: there is nothing quick about this style. Leatherwood warned, “It’s gonna take at least 30 minutes.” So this isn’t the style to try when you are running late for work in the morning. The problem is that most naturals, when doing a wash and go, they just slap the product on top of the hair. Leatherwood shared, “The most important part is the sectioning of the hair.” Most naturals aren’t taking the time to section their hair in the shower and apply their products correctly. Leatherwood continued, “The outcome of the style is the sectioning and the hydration of the hair.” If sectioning seems tedious, don’t fret, Leatherwood educated, “If you section your hair from the front to the back and then ear to ear, you will move through it so quick!” Section your hair in four first, then divide each section. Beauties, you MUST section the hair or else you will miss hair. Leatherwood continued, “When you divide it (your hair) into fours, I like to do the shingling method.” She shared, “Imagine if you’re gonna flat iron your hair with the fingers. No matter what your texture, 3 or 4, your hair will start to form to it’s true texture.” Not all products work for Type 4 hair, “If you use a product that sits on top and it’s not penetrating, that product may not be the product for you. It needs to melt into the hair, especially if you have water, it should go easily into the hair.” Leatherwood revealed another wash and go tip. While you do want your hair completely drenched, “Have a t-shirt to help dab your ends.” Why a t-shirt over a towel? “A towel is meant to extract water. A t-shirt is made to insulate you. Then use your diffuser!” Beauties, do you have a must know tip for your Type 4 wash and go? Share in the comment section! Source: Umehz Charles / EyeEm / Getty When it comes to the topic of shaping our eyebrows, the debate is an ongoing one throughout the beauty community. While some beauty mavens are interested in growing out their brows, some are conditioned to use brow pencils or powders to style their eyebrows during the growth process. Now more than ever, pomades are slowly replacing brow pencils as the popular choice. And it makes sense! Pomades are a great product to create bold brows that we see all over Instagram. Definition is key for many makeup lovers and pomades are a great alternative to execute that look. This formula also comes in handy to give brows a long-lasting hold for all day wear. However, if your a fan of the traditional soft brow look, the right pomade will deliver. Many makeup mavens think that pomades are only for those with sparse brows, but anyone can use this product. To perfect the look, dip an angled short brush into your pomade. Gently tap the brush against the back of your hand to remove excess product. Then, brush on the product starting at the center of your bottom brow for an outline. Follow up with an outline at the top of your brow starting just after your brow begins and connect with the bottom line. Fill in the brow with light strokes and use a spoolie brush to fade the product into the front. A front runner and fan favorite in the Hello Beautiful office is Anastasia Beverly Hills DIPBROW Pomade ($18.00, sephora.com ). It’s long lasting and comes in 11 different shades. On the flip side, brow pencils also come in major clutch! You can create soft, natural looking brows with ease. And if you’re a sucker for a well placed arch, brow pencils will blow your mind. Simply start at the most sparse area of your brows and fill them in with short, feather like strokes. The key to this method is to be light-handed in application and drawing on the strokes in the direction of your hair growth towards the end of your brows. If you’re looking for an affordable brow pencil, try NYX Micro Brow Pencil ($12.00, nyxcosmetics.com ). This is great if you’re just starting with brows, the only downside is that the pencil tends to run out quickly. You also have beauty mavens who can’t resist a good brow powder. Providing a softer effect that other brow products, powders can be worn alone and can be used to set eyebrow pencils for a fuller finish. The application process is also as simple as can be. All you’ll need is an angled brush coasted with the powder formula. Dab on the back of the hand to remove excess product and sweep the brush in the direction of your hair growth with a light hand. Brush through with a spollie and voila! Our Fashion and Beauty Director, Danielle James, swears by Urban Decay Brow Box in Brunette Betty ($12.97, nordstromrack.com ), “It comes with a spoolie and an applicator and even though it’s a powder, it also has a white pomade to help shape or create a stronger brow. I love it!” It’s currently on sale for over 50% off so you might want to scoop this up ASAP. So, the question remains- are brow pomades easier to shape your brows? We would definitely say that pomades are the safest bet! Not only does this product provide all day wear, it provides the picture perfect finish we all know and love. Pencils are great for those who are just starting their makeup journey, but pomades are where it’s at! What say you? Are you a fan of brow pencils or are you attached to eyebrow pomades? Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty Your mom, auntie, and uncle have all told you “Black don’t crack” and it’s basically true. Have you seen Cicely Tyson and Angela Bassett ? They got that glow, we got that glow! But as the temperature begins to cool down, moving from hot girl summer to hot nerd fall and whatever mood moniker Megan Thee Stallion bestows in the winter, your skin still requires proper care to maintain healthy, nourished skin all-year-long. Now as you contemplate how much energy you want to put into maintaining your glow, do note that Black skin is more prone to displaying the effect of frigid temperature, including dry, irritated, itchy, flaking, and ashy skin. To top it off, this can lead to skin conditions, according to Nada Elbuluk, MD, an assistant professor in the dermatology department at New York University School of Medicine and board member of the Skin of Color Society in Health Magazine . “Any scratching, inflammation, [and] irritation is more likely to lead to darkening of the skin, or what we call hyperpigmentation. In darker skin, we’re even more cautious of that because that pigmentation can last for a long time.” So, if you wanna make sure you glow all Autumn-long and beyond, check out these 10 skincare products black celebs swear by.
