Andrew Gillum Lost Florida Election Because Of Racism, Democrats Say

Here is the original post:

T he role of racism factored heavily in the Florida gubernatorial election, but not exactly how you might think it did, supporters of Andrew Gillum recently told the Tampa Bay Times. Yes, the president’s white nationalism-based backing for Republican Ron DeSantis only energized the Florida voters who likely cast ballots with the lone objective of keeping a Black man from becoming the Sunshine State chief executive. But perhaps it was Gillum’s consistent references to the overt racism from DeSantis and his supporters that may have convinced them to vote against the Tallahassee mayor. It all depended on which Democrat you asked. “Andrew Gillum would have won if he were white,” Judy Beck, a Democrat from St. Petersburg, told the Tampa Bay Times. Gillum was not conceding “after Florida’s machine recount showed Ron DeSantis with a lead that appeared insurmountable barring an extraordinary turn of events,” according to the Tallahassee Democrat . Florida State Sen. Darryl Rouson, who is Black, didn’t mince his words. “I’m not one to call racism unless I smell it, feel it, touch it, walk with it. But there are many who would argue, and make good points, that racism did have a role,” he said. Friday’s report was published amid growing calls for Gillum to concede the race “after Florida’s machine recount showed Ron DeSantis with a lead that appeared insurmountable barring an extraordinary turn of events,” according to the Tallahassee Democrat . The facts are clear, though: DeSantis cast the first racist stone the day after Gillum won his primary, warning voters not to “monkey this up” by electing the Democrat. That instance of racist dog-whistling was just the latest in a line of many from the Republican, whose supporters launched a series of racist robocalls that featured monkey sounds. Still, at least one Florida-based Democratic consultant thought Gillum shouldn’t have focused on the racism aimed at him from DeSantis and Trump. “People did not like him playing the race card,” Edwards told the Tampa Bay Times. “That had a demonstrable effect.” Race clearly played a role when it came to the actual election, which saw gubernatorial ballots cast along racial lines with 86 percent of Black voters going for Gillum, according to exit polls. But polling ahead of the election showed Gillum with a consistent, if not narrow, lead, casting further doubt on any polling ahead of an election. Still, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. And this campaign was aflame with racially provocative language that kept Gillum on the defensive addressing DeSantis’ reckless claims. But was it enough to sway the election? The answer is yes and no, according to Shannon Love, a Democratic consultant in St. Petersburg. “I don’t think many people would say they don’t think race was a factor at all, but the question is how much of a factor,” she said. Black Politicians Are Trying To Save The Democratic Party From Itself

View original post here:

W hile Democrats made some noteworthy strides in last week’s midterm elections, the consensus seemed to be that the party has been going down the wrong path of politics as of late. And nowhere has that been more clear than among its leadership, which has suffered a series of missteps and blunders that may have contributed to Democrats not being as successful as they had hoped in the crucial elections. All of which likely explains the apparent internal revolution going on with the Democratic Party, which could emerge post-elections with new leadership. See Also: Black Women Call Out DNC And Ask For Meeting: ‘Organizing Without Black Women Will Prove To Be A Losing Strategy’ With the party struggling to recover from a political retreat for several election cycles, Speaker of the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been in the political crosshairs of Democrats who are eager to take her position . Ohio’s Rep. Marcia Fudge , a member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), is one of the latest to hint at plans to compete for the coveted House Speaker post, telling the Huffington Post on Thursday that she’s “overwhelmed” by all the folks who want to see her challenge Pelosi’s leadership. “I don’t hate Nancy. I think Nancy has been a very good leader. I just think it’s time for a new one,” she said, adding that there are far more lawmakers who oppose Pelosi’s leadership than the 17 who signed a letter saying they won’t vote for her to continue as speaker in 2019. “I've not made a decision, I'm still thinking about it,” Rep. Marcia Fudge tells @ElizLanders tonight, adding she's been “overwhelmed” by people urging her to run. pic.twitter.com/0vP9686qZ7 — Ashley Killough (@KilloughCNN) November 15, 2018 Fudge dismissed the narrative that Pelosi led the party back to power in the House and criticized the California Democrat for failing to advocate for Black lawmakers in Congress. Perhaps most troubling to Black Democrats is Pelosi’s eagerness to make peace with President Trump , who brought his long history of racism with him to the White House. Shortly after Democrats won control of the House, the speaker began talking about the same bipartisanship that the Trump-led Republicans have avoided like the plague. Meanwhile, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez also came under fire from the CBC. Caucus members passed a vote of no confidence on Wednesday against Perez who took over the DNC in February 2017. Perez praised Black women for leading the party to victory last year in key races in Virginia and Alabama. However, when it came to several Black women candidates in 2018 races, the party showed little support initially, like in the case of Ayanna Pressley . Yet those same Black women stepped up as voters and candidates alike to help the party regain control of the House. Problems With Broward County Ballots Could Bode Well For Gillum

Here is the original post:

T he problematic design of Broward County’s ballots could have given prominence to the Florida gubernatorial race in which Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum could become the state’s first Black governor. SEE ALSO: Andrew Gillum Fires Back At Wannabe Dictator Donald Trump Controversy over the design brewed as a machine recount of statewide ballots was ordered on Saturday, which prompted Gillum to withdraw his earlier concession of defeat to GOP rival Ron DeSantis on election night. “Let me say clearly, I am replacing my words of concession with an uncompromising and unapologetic call that we count every single vote. I say this recognizing my fate in this may or may not change,” he said at a news conference. DeSantis led Gillum by fewer than 34,000 votes or a margin of .409 percent, which triggered an automatic machine recount under Florida law because the difference was less than half a percentage point, USA Today reported. Mayor Andrew Gillum: “Let me say clearly, I am replacing my words of concession with an uncompromised, and unapologetic call that we count every single vote.” Can we get an amen? pic.twitter.com/fUaeadGbiO — Ricky Davila (@TheRickyDavila) November 11, 2018 Broward County, a Democratic stronghold in South Florida, is at the epicenter of the tightly contested governor race, as well as the U.S. Senate competition between Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson and Gov. Rick Scott . One puzzling issue surrounds the fact that about 26,000 more voters chose a gubernatorial candidate but not a Senate candidate. The ballot design could explain what happened, NBC News reported. The list of Senate candidates appeared buried at the bottom left column of the ballot, under the list of instructions. Candidates for governor, however, were placed at the top of the center column in a prominent position. There could be tens of thousands of uncounted votes in Broward County, where Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes   is under scrutiny by Republicans . Broward was also at the center of Florida’s botched 2000 presidential election. Meanwhile, DeSantis has declared himself the winner, even though the race is too close to call. His campaign released a video on Saturday restating its view that DeSantis, who had the full support of President Donald Trump , won the race. Gillum dismissed his opponent’s claim to victory given the uncounted votes. “What I do know is that every single Floridian who took time to go out to cast their vote, to participate in this process deserve the comfort of knowing that in a democratic society and in this process, every vote will be counted,” Gillum said. Josh Duggar Visits Noah’s Ark, Appears in Throwback Pic as Quiet PR Blitz Continues

Josh Duggar and wife Anna appeared a few times on the Duggar family Facebook page this week as they start to rebuild their media presence. As you can see above, the family made a pilgrimage to Ark Encounter, a Christian fundamentalist theme park in Grant County, Kentucky. If it wasn’t obvious, it features a Noah’s Ark replica. “Visiting the Ark Encounter is a great time the whole family can appreciate,” the Duggar family wrote on their official Facebook page. “Our family looked at the life of Noah and saw how the righteousness and obedience of one man’s life spared all of humanity.” They encouraged their fans to support the Ark’s website, and implicitly to support Josh, 29, as he begins this new phase of life. The inclusion of Josh Duggar in the above photo may not be an endorsement of his righteousness or obedience, but it speaks volumes. With Josh and Anna expecting their fifth child , the family is working the local pariah back into the fold gradually but very much deliberately. Josh’s sordid past aside, by and large, fans of Counting On have been very supportive of the inclusion of Josh and Anna in family life. One follower wrote, “Nice to see josh included in the picture. Beautiful picture. Thanks for sharing,” while another Duggar fan commented:  “It is nice to see Josh in the family photos again. We went to see the ark three weeks ago I hate we missed you we would love to meet you.” Yet another supporter remarked, “Love seeing the ENTIRE family together. So good to see Josh and Anna again … I love this family!” He remains a polarizing figure, but with such loving support from their core fans, the Duggars may no longer feel the need to hide Josh. At least not as obviously as they have in the past … View Slideshow: Josh Duggar: Scrubbed From Jinger’s Wedding with Reshoots, Fake Sun Glare, Kid in Front of Face TLC has used sun glare, re-shoots, creative editing and even small children as human shields to protect viewers from the human eyesore. Now that he’s having baby #5 though, social media sightings may increase and writers may give Anna Duggar a bigger role on Counting On . Josh’s molestation scandal and infidelity were the reason his family’s popular reality TV show 19 Kids and Counting was axed in 2015. Two years later, however, the reborn Counting On is chugging along, Anna somehow didn’t divorce him, and all seems right in Arkansas. Well, mostly. Jill and Jessa were radio silent on social media after his pregnancy announcement, which is highly unusual for the duo. But if the silence is deafening, this also says a lot: Michelle Duggar shared this baby picture of Josh, Jana Duggar and John-David Duggar – the inaugural trio of her 19 kids – from 1994. Josh was an innocent little boy once! Who knew! The quiet PR blitz is underway after Josh and Anna Duggar wrote on the family blog earlier this month that their fifth child is en route: “For nearly the last two years, we have quietly worked to save our marriage, focus on our children, and rebuild our lives together as a family.”  “Doing so is never easy after a breach of trust. We’ve learned that a life of faith and rebuilding a life together is simply done one day at a time.” “As we continue our journey as a family and rebuild our lives, we are delighted to share with you that we are expecting a new baby boy later this year.” “Beauty comes from ashes and we cannot wait to see and kiss the face of this sweet new boy!” Josh and Anna wrote in their announcement. Of course, he’s not entirely out of the woods yet. Josh is being sued by a photographer whose photo he used as his profile pic on Ashley Madison, the adultery-driven website he used. Matthew McCarthy claims that Josh’s wrongful, “extreme and outrageous” use of his image subjected him to lost work and epic harassment. While it’s dubious that the photographer/DJ is seeking damages, claiming he can’t get work because Josh did this, it still hangs over his head. Doesn’t seem like the family is too worried, in any case, based on how Josh is being treated in their carefully-crafted postings lately. Will fans ever truly accept him again, though? Brown posted a video of him passing the motorist by to his Facebook page, which has since gone viral and drew out the racists of course. Brown posted the video two weeks ago when Ohio was slammed by a heavy snowstorm. Using the clever hashtag “#CallYoPresident,” he then posted the video of him explaining the situation with a photo of the stranded vehicle. Naturally, Trump types and your garden variety racist trolls found the public post and began hurling racial slurs and threats common for those hiding behind keyboards. “Wow, pretty low move, and to brag? Lol. I’m sorry your morals are so misguided,” said one person. Another just went straight for the jugular and called Brown a “black piece of sh*t.” Other gems included, “And that’s what’s wrong with people nowadays I was raised to help everyone in need no matter what but what do I know I’m just a gun owning patriotic American and you sir are a piece of sh*t.” Brown got plenty of support from the other side and amped up his stances by placing a comment that read, ” A list of people Trump voters can call for help: 1. T.J. Miller Beats the Crap Out of Donald Trump Supporter, Isn’t Helping

Actor T.J. Miller – perhaps best known for his role on the HBO sitcom Silicon Valley – is currently on a press tour for his new film, Office Christmas Party . In seems that in addition to being a comic actor on the rise, T.J. is also an outspoken critic of President-elect Donald Trump. Unfortunately, it seems that after a few drinks he sometimes succumbs to the sort of violent, politically-charged rage that members of the alt-right wake up in every day. On Thursday night, T.J. attended the GQ Men of the Year party, where we assume he received the top prize for Achievement in Having Something to Promote, and where – no joke – he appears to have pierced his own ear with a safety pin. Anyway, he was picked up by an Uber driver at the conclusion of what sounds like a seriously boozy evening. Apparently, the topic of politics came up (Pro tip: It’s always a great idea to talk about politics with strangers, especially late at night when you’ve been drinking), and things got ugly quickly. Not surprisingly, there are two very different versions of the story, but accounts concur that eventually T.J. smacked the driver, and predictably, his gesture was not well-received. The car was already stopped at T.J.’s house, and the driver got out and made a citizen’s arrest, which is apparently something that actually happens in real life. Police say the driver had no visible injuries, and that the situation is “he said/he said,” according to TMZ. So in all likelihood, T.J. won’t face any charges, but considering n eo-Nazis are boycotting Rogue One just for daring to show non-villainous brown people on screen, we’re guessing this story won’t help Christmas Party ‘s numbers in the coveted white supremacist demo. In all seriousness, though, we understand that tensions are running high these days, the country is more divided than ever, etc. But if you’re tempted to lay your hands on someone because of their political beliefs, 99.9999% of the time, you’re the assh-le. The only exception we can think of is if they just announced their allegiance to the I’m About to Hit You First Party. We understand it’s more frustrating than ever to go out in the world and interact with other humans, but there are ways to affect positive change, and resorting to violence just reflects poorly on your side. So don’t smack any Uber drivers. But don’t go taking justice into your own hands either. We know it’s on basic cable around the clock these days, but life ain’t  Home Alone,  and your ass ain’t Kevin McAllister. View Slideshow: 9 Celebs Who Promised to Move to Canada if Trump Wins

Boycott Chili’s: Dallas Veteran Had His Free Meal Taken Away After Trump Supporter Questioned His Service

Trump Supporter Prods Chili Manager Into Removing Free Meal Given To Veteran This is a damn travesty… We just celebrated Veteran’s Day Friday but apparently not everyone was up to the task of paying homage to our veterans. This is Ernest Walker, a 47year-old veteran who went to Chili’s Grill and Bar in Cedar Hill Texas Friday for his free meal. Dressed in his Army uniform, he was approached by a man wearing a Trump t-shirt who said some pretty appalling things — but even worse it appears he made it his business to go and speak to the manager and have Walker’s free meal removed. Here’s what happened according to Walker’s own Facebook post on the matter: He also posted a video: According to Dallas News reports Chili’s Grill and Bar said in a prepared statement that it has apologized and is “reaching out” to Walker. “Our goal is to make every guest feel special and unfortunately we fell short on a day where we serve more than 180,000 free meals as a small token to honor our veterans and active military for their service, hence these actions do not reflect the beliefs of our brand,” the statement said. “We are taking this very seriously and the leaders in our company are actively involved with the goal of making it right.” The restaurant replied to critics on Facebook with a similar message. Walker told Dallas News Sunday afternoon that Chili’s hasn’t personally apologized to him. “I need to be validated publicly,” he said. Walker said he was stationed in Hawaii in the 25th Infantry Division during the late 1980s. He blames the reaction of the Chili’s manager to the prodding of the Trump supporter. “I do believe that the election has changed the hearts and changed the motives of people so much so that he believed in his heart and mind after talking to the Trump supporter that I was stealing food,” Walker said. We don’t know about y’all but it seems crystal clear to us that Mr. Wesley Patrick should not be manager at Chili’s Grill and Bar in Cedar Hill any longer. What’s also clear is that Chili’s doesn’t deserve our money. This is about as disrespectful as it gets. Businesses be aware you will be exposed for treating people like this! Facebook

Skinfolk Ain’t Kinfolk: Latino Donald Trump Supporter Doesn’t Want ‘Taco Trucks On Every Corner’

Latinos for Trump founder @MarcoGutierrez : “you're gonna have taco trucks on every corner” #inners https://t.co/Vifo3q7Ah8 — All In w/Chris Hayes (@allinwithchris) September 2, 2016 Latino Trump Supporter Defends Donald Trump’s Position On Immigration It’s crazy what self-hate can do. Marco Gutierrez , the founder of “Latinos For Trump,” made some eye-poppingly ridiculous comments on MSNBC earlier tonight. Guitterrez, after Trump’s visit to Mexico, said his “people” were “dominant” and that if America didn’t keep them out there’d be “taco trucks on every corner.” Trump and Mexico haven’t been on the best of terms since he insisted that the Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto would pay for the wall to keep the “illegals” out. Nieto said in response that he “wasn’t going to build that f****** wall” via Complex GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s much-talked about visit to Mexico on Wednesday and his speech on U.S. immigration that followed apparently left out one important consequence should immigration continue: an invasion of taco trucks. Latinos for Trump founder Marco Gutierrez warned about the impending doom of “taco trucks on every corner.” But what about Trump-approved taco bowls? Marco Gutierrez, who it should be noted is Mexican himself, made the remark on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes” Thursday. “My culture is a very dominant culture,” Gutierrez said. “It’s imposing and it’s causing problems. If you don’t do something about it you’re gonna [sic] have taco trucks [on] every corner.” Trump, who has a documented history with Mexico, including calling Mexican immigrants to the U.S. “rapists” and “drug dealers,” visited the country yesterday. His trip was made possible after being invited by Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto. Trump’s trip was highlighted by the trending Twitter hashtag #TrumpMexicoTripSayings. After saying he’d be open to a “softer” immigration policy, despite previously promising a policy as impenetrable as the proposed border wall, Trump said he’d create an immigration task force in a speech yesterday. Trump also reiterated plans for the wall he plans on building, but that Mexico will reportedly pay for.  But just hours prior to Trump’s statement, Peña Nieto publicly said that wouldn’t be happening. Taco trucks on every corner sounds like heaven. Who doesn’t like tacos?

Nate Parker was poised to become a superstar with the release of his highly touted film, The Birth Of A Nation.
