The comics community lost an icon this week when Joanne Siegel, the wife of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, died at 93. An artist’s model in the 1930s, Joanne must have given Jerry some major up, up, and away, since he used her as the original model for ravishing raven-haired reporter Lois Lane. Joanne embraced her role as First Lady of Superman, and played a major role in returning the rights to the character to the Siegel family after Jerry’s death (he famously sold the rights to Superman to Detective Comics for $130 in 1937). As a tribute to this grande dame of do-goodery, Mr. Skin has thrown out his magic lasso for a randy roundup of the mellifluous mamas of Metropolis.
