Police searched the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez Tuesday following the killing of a man police say may be an “associate” of his. The story broke as Massachusetts State Police and prosecutors arrived at his $1.3 million, 5,600-square foot home in North Attleborough, Mass. Investigators reportedly spent hours with him inside the mansion. Two friends tried to leave house at the time of the search, but were stopped by a state police car at the end of driveway; their car was later searched. During the search, Hernandez received a hand-delivered package from the prominent law firm Ropes and Gray, to be opened only by “Mr. Hernandez himself.” Hernandez was initially uncooperative with police after the body of a 27-year-old man was found in an industrial park not far from the NFL player’s home. A rental vehicle with Rhode Island license plates was recovered near the scene, which led investigators to Hernandez, according to ABC News. It’s possible Hernandez may not be linked to the death, but to the vehicle in question somehow. In any case, officials have released very few details. Bristol County D.A. Sam Sutter said that based on the “nature and circumstances” of the body, Massachusetts State Police detectives would take over. Stacey James, a Patriots official, said, “I am aware of the reports, but I do not anticipate that we will be commenting publicly during an ongoing police investigation.” Hernandez is spending the off-season recovering from a shoulder operation, though he was spotted at practice welcoming new Patriots’ QB Tim Tebow .
