Michael Che’s recently attempt to be funny hasn’t just fallen flat. It’s placed the new Saturday Night Live cast member in a firestorm of controversy. In response to a viral video released this week by Hollaback! – in which a woman is catcalled over 100 times in 10 hours while walking quietly down the street – Che wrote the following on Facebook: “i wanna apologize to all the women that ive harassed with statements like ‘hi’ or ‘have a nice day’ or ‘you’re beautiful.’ i cant image what that must feel like.” He then continued to poke fun at what many believe to be a real issue of sexism, saying men get harrassed sometimes as well. “the closest thing I’ve experienced is maybe when a girl recognizes me from tv and they say things like “AHHHH!! OH MY GOD!! SNL SNL SNL!! TAKE A PICTURE!! TAKE A PICTURE!! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!! WHATS YOUR NAME AGAIN?! THANK YOU!! WAIT SAY SOMETHING FUNNY!!'”, Che wrote, adding: “But even that is nothing like the harassment of having a complete stranger tell me to ‘smile.'” Che appeared briefly as a correspondent on The Daily Show before debuting behind The Weekend Update section SNL this fall. Many have called for the comedian to apologize (for real) because they see catcalling as a legitimate problem; as an example of men disrespecting women. So far, however, Che has responded to this scandal with more humor. “can we all agree on cookies!! i think cookies are GREAT!!” he wrote on Instagram, later Tweeting: “i think some of u are misunderstanding that post. im simply just making fun of something that is important to a lot of people.” Okay, now that is funny.
