Upper Big Branch Mine Blast

Six dead and 21 still missing after the Upper Big Branch Mine Blast yesterday, April 5, 2010. Upper Big Branch mine blast occurred at about 3:00 in the afternoon. Reports said that the possible cause of the Upper Big Branch mine explosion is the methane gas built up in a sealed off area of the mine. The same kind of mine explosion happened last 2006 in Sago where 12 miners killed. Upper Big Branch mine is owned by the Massey Energy and operated by Performance Coal Company. Rep. Nick J. Rahall II said that the mine explosion was the second major disaster in a Massey site. As of now, the Massey Energy and the United Mine Workers of America were helping each other to help the miners left in the mining area. United Mine Workers of America also said that even the Upper Big Branch mine is not part of their union, they’re still willing to help the families of the trapped miners.
