Hollywood publicist Ronnie Chasen, who was killed in December, was murdered by a lone gunman, acting alone, during an attempted robbery. That was the assessment of police in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, and the determination of officials who closed the case this week. After sifting through over 150,000 pieces of evidence, police this week officially shut down their investigation , reports the Beverly Hills Courier. Chasen, 64, was shot multiple times while driving her Mercedes early November 16 after leaving an afterparty for the premiere of Burlesque . The gunman, Harold Martin Smith, later killed himself December 1 as officers were attempting to take him in for questioning in the case. Afterwards, unsubstantiated rumors emerged that she’d been the target of a professional hit, but it was determined to be a failed robbery. The gun used to commit Chasen’s murder – she was shot four times – had been stolen from a police officer during a previous burglary.
